Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Deadline is approaching...

The trade deadline is coming up soon, as in 6 days.  What should Hendry do?  Find a taker, (if he can), for Marquis?  Find another arm for the bullpen, or will the Shark fit in nicely?  Do the Cubs need another bat, especially a left handed bat?  Does the team dare trade a piece of the future for something to augment this year?  There are a lot of possibilities out there.  Houston Street?  Duescher?  Marte?  Who could it be?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

The recent Brewers surge...

...and acquisitions has got to have Hendry thinking, no doubt.

Do they want to improve the lineup, the pitching or feel they can stand pat?

We need a lefty in the bullpen and...

I cant believe I am going to say this because I love Theriot, but we need a SS so we can push Theriot to 2nd and Derosa back to being a spot starter…

you mean so we can push Theriot to the bench, right?

his range issues don’t go away just because he’s playing 2nd. Neither do his base-running issues.

Mark DeRosa is having a career year. You don’t bench that.

’’If somebody had told me we were going to lose Soriano for eight weeks, lose [Carlos] Zambrano and Kerry Wood for a couple of weeks apiece, and then at the same time lose [Reed] Johnson, and then when we played the American League not have a DH [then-injured Daryle Ward], and be in first place by two games, I’d tell you we were pretty fortunate.’’ Lou Piniella (7/23/08)

say what?

granted they’re not the best defensive pairing in baseball, but neither has exactly played his way onto the bench. and i still don’t know exactly who you’d want to replace Theriot with that’s actually on the trade market. the only three names i can come up with are Juan Uribe, Jack Wilson and Julio Lugo… none of which are exactly upgrades from Theriot.

My best guess as the smoke screen is trying to mask the obvious

Marquis is going to be part of some trade. Cubs are seeking a LHP relief pitcher/closer type, look for Sherrill or BJ Ryan are obvious targets and both teams might be interested in taking Marquis with $$ plus a SS in return. The problem is where do you find a SS back up somewhere else besides DeRosa being cloned.

Samardzija I had always thought would have a big effect in the last third of the year. Nothing like a young live arm to roll out and pick up 9-10 starts where there is little scouting.

So the Cubs would also need to buy a SS with prospects.

by Ivy Walls on Jul 25, 2008 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

I would like to see DeRo at SS

and Lil’ Babe Ruth at 2nd, not permanently but when we need to give Theriot a day off.

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 25, 2008 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

You can't have DeRosa as backup shortstop

What happens if Theriot gets hurt in September?

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRo at SS, LBR at 2B

if only that patterson kid was still around

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 25, 2008 12:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Ummm....

DeRosa has played parts of 8 games at SS in the past 3 years. That is not what you want in September during a pennant race. The Cubs can’t trade Cedeno without a backup. E-Patt wouldn’t help as he’s not a SS either.

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRo doesn't have to be a GG SS

He only has to be as good as Theriot—which is not that difficult for a guy whom Bobby Cox liked for his SS defense long before he learned to hit.

Why would Marquis be part of trade ?

Given his contract they will have to pay to trade him, he is been pitching OK lately and I would
prefer him to Marshall or Shark and the last thing the Cubs are going to do is trade for a starter

My opinion...

Valued at nothing… Is to run with what we’ve got.

I think we have a championship caliber team right now. Filling in our thin spots via trade will only create thin spots else where.

My opinion...

worth as much as yours, is that you’re right. But not because I think the club is playing championship caliber baseball, but because the market is just not right for the Cubs after trading for Tricky Dick Harden.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Jul 25, 2008 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Lefty reliever

I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to add, but I might pursue a left-handed reliever. Sherill and Ryan are too costly. Ryan is owed 10mil/yr. through 2010 and is premium closer. Sherill has done well for the O’s, they have him signed through 2011 I think and they won’t want Marquis. The price for those guys will be steep. I don’t want to trade Marshall or Marquis right now because we need an insurance policy for Harden.
Filling in with DeRosa at SS on occasion can be done, but he doesn’t have nearly enough range to play SS on a regular basis. I’d go with what we’ve got unless a solid veteran lefty is available that won’t cost the farm. That situation is unlikely though b/c if one is available, there will be lots of competition for that player.

We don't need Marquis for insurance on Harden...

We’ve got plenty of arms to fill in if needed. Shark, Lieber, Marshall, Gaudin… DeRo actually came up as a SS/2B, and although he’s no Hanley Ramirez, he has plenty of range. My preference would be for Sherill, and ship them Marquis and whoever else to balance out some of the money situation.

i agree

but from what i’ve been reading i don’t know if we have enough for sherrill or the orioles are asking for too much.
That would be great though.
Marmol, Sherill, Wood

As we know trading

with the Orioles is like dealing with OPEC.

Sherrill is going to require a lot because he is still under team control for the next year at least and he is relatively cheap from a salary perspective.

by TheRiot Police on Jul 25, 2008 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

But what is the O's preference?

Sherrill will require some talent in return. It’s not a money thing. Marquis and some mid-level prospect won’t cut it.

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Marquis and whoever else.

It could take 3 or more players. It is a money thing. It’s a money thing because of what Marquis is being paid, and is still owed. Therefore, if you can convince the Orioles to take on say 1/2 of the ‘09 Marquis money, and give them somebody they want, somebody they might want, and another player, along with Marquis… they might be able to get it done. We’ll see. The Cubs have a lot of chips in the minors.

by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 25, 2008 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

what?

but our minor league players suck! Pie can’t hit major league pitching, Hart is terrible, Marshall is…

oh, I can’t do it. It’s just not the same.

Orioles need more.

Reports I’ve read say the Orioles do not intend to trade Sherrill unless the get blow away with an offer. Any offer involving Marquis will not blow away the Orioles.

by cubfan2201 on Jul 25, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

But the Cubs want Sherill

so the O’s have to trade him :-)

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you starting then

with Marshall and Ceda? Otherwise why in the world would Baltimore want to do this? Sherrill is cheap. He’s good. They don’t need or want Marquis.

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Hanley Ramirez is no Hanley Ramirez either

i’ve seen plenty of him, seeing as how i live in Florida, and his fielding abilities are even more over-rated than Jeter’s.

by Petrie000 on Jul 25, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Blevins

With all this talk about needing a lefty reliever has anyone notcied that Jerry Blevins has been lights out for Oakland so far? 8 games no runs allowed. In case you forgot we traded him and Bowen for Kendall last year.

by cubfan2201 on Jul 25, 2008 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I think if they get anything

It has to be bullpen…

Nobody in there really inspires absolute confidence with maybe the exception of Wood and even he at times has had some issues.

We have two dominate starters in Zambrano and Harden…however only one of those starters (Zambrano) has a history that he can go late into games. So, if Harden gives ya 6 plus innnings of 3 runs or less ball you are going to need the bullpen to pick up 3 plus innings to close the game out. Let’s face it, a playoff game is not typically going to be a blow out so these guys are going to have to probably hold a close lead or hold the the opponent so that the offense can come back.

I could not agree more

The lineup is fine. There is planty of run-producing, even with the odd injury or player getting ice cold.

The starting pitching is fine, particularly with Marshall with an occasional start.

Me- I hope they find a way to get rid of Howry, and replace him with a good right hander, considering Marmol’s recent iffy-ness.

Hendry will do something, I have little doubt.

the bullpen market this year is really weak
