We couldn't help you if we tried!
It's a good thing for the Cubs that this isn't the last days of the season and you're hoping we can fend somebody off. We just couldn't do it. We couldn't spoil milk!
Fortunately, the Cubs snapped a losing streak just in time. If the Cards and Brewers had split the Cubs could have gained ground.
Unfortunately...the Redbirds are red-faced, to say the least.
Four games, four losses, all given away by a late longball. It was like watching the same game for nights in a row.
If there's anything good about it for the Cubs, maybe it's an indication that the team to beat is becoming more obvious. It's the Brewers. At least that's how it looks right here, right now.
I haven't heard any rumors of a trade. It appears that the Cardinals are going to play the hand they have, hoping they have an ace in the hole. But after dropping 4 straight they might make a few calls, but I doubt it.
Sure, the optimistic point of view is "there's a lot of baseball left....." but you can't say that forever.
It's becoming more and more clear to me that it's going to be Cubs/Brewers at the end, and if that's how it play out then both teams will have deserved it. I can't say that about the Cardinals. If we get to post season it will probably be as a wild card.
I never did like the wild card thing. I want to see the best teams get to the post season, not the also-rans.
Today my money is on the Cubs, but it won't be easy. It looks like a dogfight.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

a closer, I would be pretty pissed off.

Doggie...
I couldn’t agree with you more. But I have a feeling they’re going to stand pat.
I think they’re counting on Wainwright and Carpenter to help pull them out.
I’d be a bit ticked off as a player if they didn’t get somebody to help out. It would send a message that they don’t want to spend any money to help a bunch of young players who have played hard…and well.

I don't think he's a troll.
He’s just a retired guy who’s a Cards fan and, for whatever reason, seems to want to hang out here. I’m not crazy about seeing the frickin’ Cards logo five times on the fanpost bar every day, but he seems to honestly want to share his thoughts about the Cubs from a Cards fan point of view. Nothing wrong with that as long as he keeps it respectful.
And I don’t completely disagree with him – the Brewers, having won eight straight – are the team the beat right now. And let them be: They’re having a nice run, but it’s not going to last forever. And, for what it’s worth, I hope the Cards keep losing – by homer or otherwise.

Like Daver says, as long as it doesn’t devolve into “No, YOU suck” smack talk it’s all good.
Checked MLB Trade Rumors earlier and rumors are flying that Roy Halladay is wanting out of Toronto. Maybe Mozeliak calls Ricciardi and asks what it’ll take?

It was a nice post
who cares who writes it? If you see his handle on a post, there’s nothing making you click on the link. He’s not trolling. His post is just as if you two sat next to each other in the stands or in a bar. Simply conversational in nature.

I agree.
Don’t pick on the guy just for being a Cardinals fan. Try going over to the Evil BCB and having a legitimate conversation with the Brewer fans. They instantly attack you. I would like to believe Cubs fans in general are better than that. Wouldn’t it be cool if just one fan from each team in our division posted here regularly? We could get all views from each team that way.

and you made another meaningless comment….
it looks like the only reason you clicked this fanpost was because I wrote it. your only comment is that it’’s a meaningless.
If you and your buddy, dr stabbingworth don’t have anything to say that actually means anything worth reading then why comment at all? Who’s really doing the trolling?
Why don’t you and you pal go play in the kiddie pool and let us adults have a grown up conversation?

Didn't Like Wild Card 'Til '98
I was someone who said that the wild card was a horrible idea until 1998. How dare a 2nd place team make the playoffs! My opinion of the wild card magically changed when the Cubs had no chance of beating out the Astros for the NL Central title. They were in a dogfight with the Mets and later the Giants for the all-important wild card berth. I was so happy when the Cubs won it in 1998.

The Cards were in every game
so it wasn’t like the Brewers murdered them. (except for the CC game even though the score was not even that bad)
by lexmarklover on Jul 25, 2008 2:31 PM CDT 0 recs
they were in every game except CC's like you said
but they gave them all up. being in the game doesn’t mean squat in the win column. The starting pitching did fair, they kept the game close. but you just can’t rely on the bullpen late in the game.

In the end
It’s usually about which team is hotter at the moment. Brewers are pumping the gas peddle while Cards are on the breaks. And Cubs are on the left lane of the highway trying to not let anyone pass them.
Wow I think I just made a cool analogy of the top 3 in NL central!

I dont like your team but...
I do enjoy seeing this from another perspective. The Cardinals were over performing early on… but I could be wrong. The Brewers are tough… it should be interesting down the stretch

I think you stated the obvious...
...as the Brewers acquisitions are going to make this very interesting to say the least.
It’s very likely the 2nd place team in the central is the wild card.

by MPH73 on Jul 25, 2008 3:15 PM CDT 0 recs
Exactly...
I actually think the Cardinals DID help us. By getting swept, they dropped back to 4 games back (5 back in the loss column). We will likely only need to eliminate one of the two teams. Milwaukee is more likely to be the more dangerous team down the stretch anyway. Therefore, by getting swept, the Cards hurt their chances of catching the Cubs in the final months.
I’d obviously love to win the division, but getting to the playoffs is all that really matters. It is very likely that the Wild Card will come from the Central (certainly won’t come from the West, and we are comfortably ahead of the Mets and Phillies as well). So at this point (with the sweep), the Cubs can start to distance themselves from the Cards.

Ryan Braun
It was mentioned last night how Braun was Cadillac-ing at the plate after his game winning HR…I agree that TLR won’t forget that and the Cards will be dishing out some payback.

Yea!
The Cards aren’t dead. they’ll still be heard from. I’m not sure how much payback they can dish out. They better get well soon. Albert is in some kind of funk (for Albert) and the other bats went cold.
they need to step it up if they want to keep any respect.

I don't mind the Wild Card
but it seems to me that it’s determined wrong. Instead of the team with the best record of the non-division winners, it makes more sense to me to choose the team that came closest to winning its division.
For example, if a team wins 89 games and finishes 6 games out in their division (having played nearly the identical schedule of the winner of their division), why should they be rewarded over a team that only won 88 games but finished a mere 1 game out of their division (again, having played nearly the identical schedule as their division winner)?
It just seems like that would promote more intense divisional play and less national scoreboard watching in divisions you cannot possibly control. I’m not trying to start a debate here, it’s just something that has always bugged me about the Wild Card. BTW, I rather enjoy seeing your posts, but I wish you’d just convert already, Dave. It’s gonna happen!

Revised WC Idea
An argument could be made that the Wild Card race has exceeded the traditional division races in terms of excitement. It allows more teams to be in the hunt later in the year. Add to that the fact that Wild Card winners have gone onto the World Series (03 Marlins, 04 Red Sox, 05 Astros, 06 Tigers, 07 Rockies) and you have a pretty good thing going.
So what about putting the two leagues back into one non-divisional format and just seeding the four top finishers per league into the postseason? While losing the thrills of a tight division race where you have to win it outright or go home, you would maintain the thrills of a bunched-up group of clubs fighting for the 3rd and 4th seeds. Also MLB would be assured that truly the four best clubs (by virtue of W-L records) made the postseason.

I'd be okay with that
but I’m pretty sure we’ll never see it while Uncle Bud is at the wheel. That would mean less Cubs games at Miller Park and I’m afraid that would just not do…

The NHL playoff seeding
is one thing that league does right. The Division titles don’t mean that much. The best records get to the playoffs. NO team from the West deserves a shot at the World Series.
How could a sub 500 team be a “Champion?” Yet, it could happen if the West winner gets hot during the playoffs.
And, that would suck big time.

Talking about Brewers
Which Brewer do you see as being a “Cubbie Killer”? Everyone seems to fear Fielder and Braun but to me Corey Hart seems to get those hits against our team. Anyone else seem to notice that as well?
