Open Thread: Brewers vs. Astros 7/25

Today was a disappointment. Instead of living in the past, let's push forward and give Harden some runs tomorrow. He may only need a couple. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Howry sucks, we can't score runs. Keep movin on I say.

No matter how much we only want to worry about our team and our team only, we can root for the Astros tonight together. Might be a little fun. Go Stros! Light em up!

Agreed.

Anytime Kendall catches someone stealing it must be a horrible call.

I've got tickets for all four games

When I bought them in February, I was hoping it would be for something. This is a bit more than I bargained for. But I can’t wait to get up there. It’s gonna be fun.

It will be fun, but not good for stress level

I can handle it

This has the potential to be the biggest Cubs series since the one in September 2003 against the Cardinals. I think that might have been the best series I’ve ever seen—had the Cubs lost 4 of 5, I’d have said the same thing.

The game thread over at brew crew ball is pretty interesting.

They are spending more time talking about the Cubs than the Brewers (almost)

That's because they know there team isn't worth talking about

because just like last year they will choke the last 2 months and not make the playoffs.

I am going to Mondays game

When I bought the tickets, I thought it would be Z and Sabbathia, but Lilly and CC will have to do.

Hope you didn't get raked over the coals too much

A few years back, I bought tickets for a Cubs game in February, and the best seats I could get were in the upper deck. A buddy of mine bought tickets four days before the same game and got seats six rows behind the plate, from the box office. I guess you never know.

Derosa

is key because he can play anywhere and give guys like Theriot, Rami, and Dome a day off. Ward has looked bad as a pinch-hitter, but would fare better with a start now and then. Blanco needs to spell Soto once a week also, IMO; kid has never had this much worked heaped on him.

Watching this game

I can already sense how tough next week’s series is going to be. The Brewers are a really good team. The Cubs are going to have to throw them out of this rhythm they get in. Cubs hitters are going to have to be crazy patient to have any hope of getting into the Brewer BP. That might mean called 3rd strikes, but that’s the way it goes. They also should consider pitching the Brewers hitters inside. A lot. A ton. In the very first game. Get inside their heads and throw them off balance from the very beginning. It’s going to be tough.

Tinker to Evers to Chance.

by Matt Allison on Jul 25, 2008 8:34 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd be happy with a 2-2 split

Maybe win the middle two games. Nice if you could sneak out a win in the getaway game.

Cubs

are going to have to go at it like it’s a war. The two teams are so evenly matched that they’ll need any outside advantage they can manufacture.

Tinker to Evers to Chance.

by Matt Allison on Jul 25, 2008 8:46 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You bring up an interesting point

Are they evenly matched?
While we wait for the Astros to wake up, lets compare. Pitchers first

CC vs. Z – Brew
Sheets vs. Harden – Push
Demp vs. Parra – Push
Lilly vs. Suppan – Cubs
Bullpen – Cubs

by louslovechild on Jul 25, 2008 8:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's about right, I think

Offense—I’d say it’s about a push.

Bench—Cubs have Ward, Cedeno, Fontenot, etc. Brewers have Kapler, Counsell, etc. Pretty even there.

The Cubs have Lou and the Crew has Yost. That might be the tiebreaker.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 25, 2008 8:58 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Offense as of late is not a push.

They better show up for next week’s series

by louslovechild on Jul 25, 2008 9:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As of late, you're right

As of early, Cubs by far.

I think what we’re basically saying is that it’s anybody’s series.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 25, 2008 9:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True

Cubs hit well in Miller. Should be ok series for us. I am going on Monday. Seeing CC pitch should be interesting.

by louslovechild on Jul 25, 2008 9:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm excited about that

Just to watch CC pitch. Never seen him live before.

I’m counting on the usual high number of Cubs fans being at Wrigley North. A few years ago, the White Sox played at home at the same time the Cubs played in Milwaukee, a day game. Sox drew about 19,000. So more Cubs fans drove 90 miles on a beautiful day to watch a game than the Sox could muster in their own park. Typical. :)

Aramis Ramirez and Reed Johnson during warm ups at their rehab assignment with the Peoria Chiefs at Kane County. Aramis Ramirez missed a home run by about 2 feet at his first at bat and ended up with a stand up double. He later took a base-on-balls and scored twice. Reed Johnson also had a hit and scored. It's more walk-off magic for the Cubs, when a bases-leaded walk to Jake Fox gives them the 2-1, extra-innings win.

It's yet another episode of "Outfield Adventures", starring Milton Bradley, as he'd lose this Jason Kendall-hit ball in the sun Friday against the Brewers.

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
