Open Thread: Brewers vs. Astros 7/26

I was really hoping not to have to do this tonight, but here we sit. Once again, we live in the future not the past. Coulda, shoulda, wouldas never got anyone anywhere. This team we love so much wants to win just as badly,(I am guessing more) than we do. They are struggling, but our time will come. Hope it starts tomorrow, but definitely on Monday, or god help us.

On to tonights Brewers vs. Astros game. It is Backe, who has pitched pretty well this year, and Dave Bush, who has had his ups and downs. We shall see. Brewers have a different line-up in there yesterday, with Durham at 2B and Cousell at SS.

Go Astros.

Anyone have tips for stopping the itch underneath a cast?

I have never broken any bone until 2 days ago. My ankle itches so bad I want to scream. Watching the ridiculous game today, along with a hanger inside my cast, about drove me nuts.

Two runs!

I hope the Astros score more then 2 runs! I can not stand watching our offense go out and score 2 runs everyday!!!

Mets Cards is getting ugly fast

Mets brought up a guy to make his MLB debut. Has not gotten an out , just walked in a run
and it is already 2-0. Glad the Phillies won today.

Home Run Pence!!!

3 – 2 Astros! Why do the Cubs Make me have to like these Texans.

Bourn gets gunned down stealing second. I think Kendall has improved his skills a tad. He is catching a lot more runners than he used to.

Thank You.

I try to be, but in my opinion when a team is REALLY REALLY hot, the breaks seem to fall their way. I have no stats to back this up. Right now the Brew Crew is having on of those magicial stretches.

No matter what, things always could be worse.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 26, 2008 9:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

from my experience with some of my friends who are like this...

They are actually real fragile inside. They will break apart thinking negative and hence they resist/fight anything that’s negative to a particular view point even though that might be more realistic. I am not saying NBF is like this or that there are no idiotic comments over here that he doesn’t like..but just my 2 cents.

by cubsnlinux on Jul 26, 2008 9:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just don't get this

collective psychosis Cubs fans seem to have. I know the history, but that’s irrelevant to this team. Totally irrelevant.

If there were two games left in the season instead of two months, yes, I’d be nervous. Not now.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 26, 2008 9:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

let's put it like this..

If there are two months still left but say the cubs are close to being mathematically eliminated then would you be nervous at that point? If your point is yes then I would be amazed. Because nervousness or anxiety in situations like this builds up over time (over a period of suckitude) rather than as a instantaneous spike. If the Cubs play 1 or 2 bad games and if everyone decide to slit their wrists then that would be ridiculous. Also people would be less nervous if we have a 10 game cushion in the division. But this is a close race and as we discussed earlier we have years of suckitude looming over whispering that we have to wait till next year AGAIN.

I don’t think that every opinion expressed over here is rational but you are not doing any good by admonishing the posters that are “stupid”/”morons” if they post something negative.

by cubsnlinux on Jul 26, 2008 9:28 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yep I agree

There are going to be opinions that just dont mesh. You think the ProTheriot-/Anti Theriot debate was religion or politics. People feel very strongly, I stay away from that one b/c its the same thing each time.

because for some winning it all is the real fun

When you play video games do you always play Level 1, Win, Power off and have a great day after that? With the anguish that we been through all these years, we have very high expectations. We are not the Pirates for pete’s sake, we are the Chicago Cubs who fill the ball park day in and day out.

I thought about this tonight

Braun vs. Soriano – Brew
Cameron vs. Reed – Push
Hart vs. Fuke – Brew
Hall vs. Rami – Cubs
Theriot vs. Hardy – (Interesting one, depending on how you look at it) – Crew
Durham/Weeks vs. Derosa – Push
Fielder vs. Lee – See SS, – Push
Kendall vs. Soto – Soto
Pitching is a push as mentioned before
Bench – Cubs

Based on that comparison,

it looks like both teams are about dead even, just like the standings. And that’s why they play the games, to see who is the best.

After 162, we’ll find out just who is the best, because how the teams look on paper doesn’t really matter in the end. Who plays the best on the field is what matters most and as they say, that’s why they play the games.

It’s going to be a great race! Let’s all enjoy it.

Ironic if Marquis (our 4th/5th starter) ends up getting a win tomorrow after both Demp and Harden were denied?

OK

Deep breaths. Deep breaths. It will be hard to look at the standings and see the Brewers on top (cuz you know that is how they will break it down), but gotta question, a poll if you will, for everyone on here before we head off to bed.

Status of the NL Central One Week from now. Give me your best guess. Not angry guesses, or homer guesses. Best guesses.

Don't know

Either same as now, or either Cubs or Brewers ahead by a game.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 26, 2008 9:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...

After the last Marlins game, we have 4 vs. the Brewers. I’d love it if we did but I don’t think we’ll do better than splitting that series…

After that we get the Pirates at home and the Brewers get the Braves in ATL (who are actually decent in ATL) So if our offense starts working again then maybe up by 1 (2 if we’re lucky) in a week?

by hmlee on Jul 26, 2008 9:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'll get out of the offensive funk...

and wouldn’t it be great if we went on a tear when we do!

Hey, it's a new century!

by cowsarecool220 on Jul 26, 2008 9:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yup

I gotta say though, I’m mystified by what’s going on at the plate. Mainly because sometimes we have those games (end of ARI and HOU series) where we look like we’re out of it… or we have those games where a couple of our funkified hitters get a few hits or something… but then we go right back to the slump the next day. It confuses me.

by hmlee on Jul 26, 2008 9:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well maybe...

Being tied for 1st is the kick in the pants our offense needs to get in gear?

Right?

Right?

I've been watching the Brewers all year living in Madison

And about a month ago, they were about 8 games back and looking done. I honestly believe if Soriano doesn’t get hurt, we go up by at least ten games and they don’t make the move for Sabathia. Instead, we gave them a little life and they’re going for it.

They are a very good team with very few holes. We can laugh about their bullpen but it’s gotten way better than it was last year. Gagne was dragging them all down. We can lose this next series and still make it up down the road but we just need to start playing better soon. It’s been said many times that both of these teams can’t keep up the pace they’re on and I agree.

It seems like the Cubs confidence is way down. I think this next series will tell us a lot about the direction they’re headed, at least temporarily. Winning tomorrow will help us all feel better. Of course in baseball momentum can change on a single play (walk-off homer, game-ending DP, etc) and the Brewers have been VERY fortunate when it comes to injuries. It should be interesting.

Don't think it's confience....

I think the rest of the league has adjusted to what the Cubs are trying to do on offense….

and the cubs offense hasn’t adjusted back…..

That said….not sure how much the coaching, scouting, et.al. helps a veteran team….that said…I think it really helps a young team that listens and buys it…

The best defense is a good offense

by kcjones on Jul 26, 2008 9:32 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So....

Are the hitters getting briefings and scouting reports? I don’t know….

Looked to me late in the game and in extras…too many guys were trying to do the walk off thing instead of playing “team ball”

BUT … you really can’t tell

The best defense is a good offense

Exactly.

I was flipping thru channels this morning on the radio and some local guys on sports radio (maybe 1070 or 1310?)was doing a thing on the upcoming series. Well informed..until he said
there was a difference between brewer fans and the hateful Cubs fans.

I thought nasty vile things about him and turned off the radio

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
