Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Tuesday 7/29, 7:05 CT
Chicago Cubs @ Milwaukee Brewers
While most of the rest of you will be watching this marquee pitching matchup, I'll be at Wrigley Field tonight for its first-ever minor league game between the Cubs' Midwest League affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs, and the A's affiliate, the Kane County Cougars. BCB reader Josh77 has written this excellent preview of the game, useful if you're going, or just following it from home. The Cougars' games are carried on Aurora radio station WBIG (1280 AM) -- streaming here. Peoria Chiefs games are carried on Peoria radio station WOAM (1350 AM).
Now, on to tonight's Cubs/Brewers game, where, if the weather forecast in the box above is correct, the roof may be closed at Miller Park (it was open last night).
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tonight's game is a pitching rematch from Opening Day on March 31, when both Sheets and Z pitched into the 7th without allowing a run, before Kerry Wood gave up three runs in his first relief appearance of the year and Kosuke Fukudome tied it up with a three-run HR off Eric Gagne. Remember that? When Fukudome was hitting?
One of the best things about Z this year is that he's not trying to overthrow everything. This has resulted in fewer K's, but a better ERA and only nine HR allowed -- compared to a career-high 23 last year. That should help him neutralize this HR-happy Milwaukee lineup.
Sheets got the win against the Cubs and Jason Marquis on April 29 at Wrigley Field, a mess of a game that's best forgotten -- except for the seven walks the Cubs drew off Sheets, forcing him out of the game after throwing 108 pitches in five innings. If the Cubs can do that tonight, good things will follow.
Today's game is on WGN, so those of you outside Chicago won't be forced to listen to the Brewers announcers on EI. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
MLB.com Gameday (2007 version)
MLB.com Gameday (2008 version)
Baseball-reference.com game preview
After yesterday's record, today I'll post enough threads tonight -- I hope. First pitch thread at 7 pm CT; overflow comment threads at 8 pm, 9 pm and 9:45 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Well, I'm not going to make any predictions but...
...after last night’s gutsy slugfest, I’m feeling pretty confident. Z is, if nothing else, a competitor, and he knows what’s at stake right now. And, for better or worse, I find Sheets less intimidating than CC – if only because he’s more of a known quantity.
Go Cubs!!!

about Hegel--
I studied in germany for a semester and Hegel was in the first set of readings for ‘Die Philosophie der Geschichte’, the Philosophy of History.
That was quite a trial by fire…
But yes, I’d take Kant over Hegel- along with the non-totalitarian slice of Nietzsche :)

I'm hoping to go into teaching, actually--
I did History as an undergrad (War, Propaganda, and Society) and i’m hoping to go back and get the PhD. But for now, I’m just paying the bills and working in politics…
The funny thing about philosophers of history is that they often trail ‘true’ philosophers in getting to the same points: when postmodernism was all the rage in philosophical circles, there were still a whole lot of historians harping on finding one, exclusive, truth, and the “one narrative” to explain everything…

Hegel has sadly been relegated to
German Studies departments. As difficult to read and horrific in its implications as Hegel’s philosophy can be, it is vital to understand him if one is to understand those who follow him, i.e. Marx, Neitzsche, Foucault, Deleuze, etc.
That said, Hegel is one pill I am loathe to swallow.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
Who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out-consume
Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel.
There’s nothing Nietzsche couldn’t teach ya
‘Bout the raising of the wrist.
Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed.
John Stuart Mill, of his own free will,
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away—
Half a crate of whisky every day.
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle.
Hobbes was fond of his dram,
And René Descartes was a drunken fart.
‘I drink, therefore I am.’
Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed,
A lovely little thinker,
But a bugger when he’s pissed.

I won't do it every day
but it was VERY apparent last night. Cubs were up 2-0, we were good. Then the Cubs were down 3-2, and it was nutso for three innings as the Cubs went up 4-3 and then tied 4-4…
And then DLee did his thing, and suddenly, it was like a field fulla gophers that had seen an owl.

well, he did so well against the first two batters
it wasn’t exactly a surprise, but maybe people thought it was going to be ok. When he didn’t get the strike-call, it went downhill fast.
no one called for him to die in a fire (that I saw). that was, uh, nice.

defacto cub fan here
by way of “buddha”
missed last night’s game because of work. the METS bullpen blew another one last night so i don’t have the stomach to watch and post against a team (MARLINS) which has such a small pay roll that performs so well against the large payroll METS. sooooooooo
i look forward to reading / posting (only slightly) this evening while I watch the CUBS on WGN.
a thought. would anyone be in favor of letting “RON and PAT” assist Joe Buck and Tim McCarver broadcast one game of the playoffs if the CUBS made it. To be honest, I could use a break from Joe and Tim and I would just absolutely love to see and hear RON and PAT do a televised CUBS playoff game.

I can only imagine the Saturday Night Live skits after Ron does a nationally televised Cubs game….(I do like this idea, though - FOX could carry the game with one team’s announcers on FX, another of FOX NEWS or the local Fox Sports Net, and their national team on the national broadcast)....

Of course, I’d start over Weeks. Ye gods what a stinker he had last night.

what is up with Woody (so to speak)?
is he going to do rehab in the minors? I thought he was possibly going to pitch an inning at Wrigley tonight. how is the blister healing, or is it not?
If someone already posted this, I apologize, I am at work and can’t find anything.

I was pretty disappointed last night...
...to hear the crowd roar with glee when Derrek hit a ball of his ankle/leg. I’m sure some rivalries do this – Mets/Phils, Sox/Yanks – but I thought we could keep this rivalry a bit more professional and friendly. And Derrek’s one of the nicest guys in baseball – not like it was Bonds up there. Uncalled for, Brew Crew fans.

Definitely.
Aside from the whole “better to beat a team at its best” thing, the guy’s a human being. Totally uncalled for and I know the Brewers organization would say the same.

And probably most Brewers fans.
Let’s be honest—probably only 20,000 Brewers fans there last night, about half of them true-blooded Brewers fans. Tickets were probably pretty expensive, pricing out big fans.
Not sure this is a reflection on the fan base (not saying you’re saying that, just saying).

I was very surprised by that at the time. It felt pretty good to see all those “real baseball fans” scurrying for the exits with 1 out to go in the 9th. Let’s hope for a repeat of that.
