Best baseball commentators

I remember watching the baseball ESPN crew in 90's for the wednesday's games and really liking them, especially Gary Thorne. I don't think he's mentioned amongst the great commentators but he was one of my favorites. His calls during HRs (at the wall, Goodbye, Home run!!) were electrifying. I also saw him do NHL games and even though I don't follow hockey I thought he was great there to.

Any other guys who are great but aren't usually mentioned as being of the best?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Thorne is a good hockey announcer.

I don’t really care for him on baseball. His pacing and cadence aren’t that good for baseball, though they suit a hockey game well.

Anyone looks good if you compare them to Hawk or Joe Morgan or Steve Phillips.

On a related note…I about threw my pillow at the TV last night after the game when I switched to ESPN and Buck Showalter was saying something to the effect of

“The Cubs might have won tonight but I’m still taking Millwaukee…CC had a great performance tonight keeping them in the game and they seem to have a lot better clubhouse chemistry than the Cubs.” – hmm…ok well I can see you taking Millwaukee maybe but I’d say the Cubs chemistry is pretty strong as well.

I heard that too

and I’m with you all the way. Buck doesn’t know squat.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Was Showalter Confused?

I believe he has mistaken this Cubs team for the 2004 squad in evaluating team chemistry.

Although Buck went to my alma mater...

...I must differ with his clubhouse chemistry comment.

First of all, clubhouse chemistry is vastly overated. Second, Buck is not exactly know for inducing the greatest “chemistry” on the clubs he has managed.

Milwaukee has a legit shot at the division, but if they win, it won’t be because of chemistry.

Buck Did Go to Miss State

I graduated from State. I’m not disappointed that he did not replace Ron Polk. I’m surprised that John Cohen got the job. I wanted Tommy Raffo to get promoted, and so did Polk.

This Cubs team has good chemistry. I don’t see any malcontents on this team. Zambrano has learned to control his emotions. Soriano is not a prima donna.

Polk is a classy dude...

...I last played for him over 20 years ago, and I still get a birthday card, Christmas card and anniversary card from him each year. All of them are hand written and they mention my wife and kids by name.

The guy is one of a kind.

On Sunday night

when they showed the pitching match-ups for the series, with us throwing Lilly, Z, Dempster, and Harden, Karl Ravech actually said that it lines up perfectly for the Brewers. One of the best 4-man rotations I’ve seen, and he gives the advantage to the Brewers.

Yeah because you know late in close games

chemistry beats offense and a good bullpen.

Showalter is right

Perceived chemistry is much more important than, say, team defense or or a bullpen.

Best?

Well, I gotta actually go with Len and Bob. I mean, at first, I didn’t love the guys, but now they’ve gotten into a groove—at this point, they BRING a LOT to every game, both in terms of insight and entertainment, and do so in a way that (while definitely slighted towards the Cubs) avoids too-much eggregious homer-ism.

In a totally selfish way, I’m hoping Brenly never gets offered a managerial job, just because I love listening to Brenly explain the game to Len, and Len call the action.

by Chadnudj on Jul 29, 2008 11:30 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I really enjoy

Len and Bob as well. As a kid, I used to listen to Ernie Harwell calling tigers games. I miss him alot.

Brenly has gotten better the longer he's been in the booth...

seems to be more comfortable to be critical at times. I’ve grown to like his analysis. Len on the other hand, while good with the flow of the game and the banter with brenly, that pubescent voice crack during every big moment irritates me beyond measure.

The Red Sox tv guys, Remy and Orsillo are hysterical – as are the Giants guys.

Kruk and Kuip

are great on the Giants broadcasts—they’re also pretty pro-Cub which makes them easier to listen to Of course, Krukow came up through the Cubs farm system and Kuiper is from Racine. They cheer for the Giants over the Cubs, of course, but you can tell they’re pulling for us when it doesn’t hurt the interests of the Giants.

I very much enjoy George Grande on the Reds broadcasts. The hellspawn they have doing the other half of the Reds games, not so much.

Hands down, Vin Scully...he's the play-by-play AND the color man...

...when Cubs play Dodgers I look for the west coast feed. He’s a walking encyclopedia of baseball history.

Listen to Scully as I catch a fair amount of Dodger games living out here, but...

I respectfully disagree . I apologize if this is disrespectful to a legend, which I do consider him, but for me, the man makes baseball painful. His broadcasts are not interesting and are very dry. I would really like to see another in the booth, but I’m sure that would be met with extreme opinion.

Hey, no offense taken...

...I don’t listen to him every day, I might change my opinion if that was the case. A second person might improve the broadcast.

Well..

by pickupman21 on Jul 29, 2008 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like them too...

I remember when Chip and Stoney left and Len and Bob came in, I just wasnt happy them two left. You know they both loved the Cubs and were just as excited as we were when the Cubs would win. Over the years I have grown to like Len and Bob. They are both good baseball guys and are genuine fans of the Cubs. I think in the first year maybe two they were just annoucers but now they are fans first and announcers second. As far as Len’s voice changes, I think it shows how excited he really is and he does have a good home run call. He mixes it up a little. Chip was always the same..Swung and belted.. it was great with his voice but always the same. Bob brings a great baseball mind to the booth. He wasnt the greatest player or manager but knows the ins and outs and gives he opinion with truth and is now not affraid to say if something wasnt either done right or the most effective. Altho I dont think he would ever question Lou’s or any other managers choices. He knows things are much different in the dug out then in the booth.

the guy from the Mariners. “He Gone.” I notice lots of other announcers using that catch phrase.

One ESPN guy I like is

Orel Hershiser. He was a pitcher and a pitching coach. I like his comments and analysis on the pitchers in the game.

He was also one of my favorite non-Cub players when he played. It didn’t hurt that he helped me win a fantasy league during his great 1988 season. That was 20 years ago. I am getting old.

what ? no votes for Hawk Harrelson?

I live in LA and have become a bit of a Dodgers fan (except when they play the Cubs) because of Vin Scully. He’s one of the last of generation and getting up there in years, so I’m savoring it while I can.

I heard him on EI earlier this year and was surprised at how old he sounded.

I know this is the "best" announcers...

but one guy I absolutely loathe listening to is Joe Buck, no matter the sport he is terrible.

As with the previous posters, I enjoy Scully, and maybe I was too young and I’m mistaken, but didn’t Al Michaels do baseball in the mid-late 80s?...Having fuzzy memories of that, but I enjoy anything Michaels does.

by jbertram on Jul 29, 2008 3:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He did...

He was also the play by play voice on “Hardball III” on the Sega Genesis / PC. It seems silly, but I think that’s the last “baseball” he has ever called.

I'd really like...

to hear what Jon Miller could do without the anchor that is Joe Morgan.

But I’m a Steve Stone guy through and through. There were few things more enjoyable in baseball than watching Stoney predict a pitch and then see it come true.

Very few things? Really?

Have you ever watched a game. Stoney is an arrogant ass. Hated him with the Cubs and hate him still. He first guess all the time ALL THE TIME—-the more he does it the more times he will be correct. Simple math.

IMO—-You can take Steve Stone and Dan Bernstein and fire them from anything to do with sports. They suck

Great topic...

...I tend to lean towards the more traditional type play by play guys, but like a color guy that is knowledgable and has a bit of a sense of humor.

Also, I think there is a big difference between doing play by play on the radio and TV, as the radio guy has a much tougher job. I think Pat does a great job on the radio and I also liked Vince Lloyd a lot back in the day. Brenly is also growing on me because he knows what he is talking about, and I like his dry sense of humor.
