Cubs-Brewers: Can't we all get along?
Before you post flames -- No, I'm not suggesting that Cubs fans suddenly start cheering for the Brewers or vice-versa. Or that people should stop talking trash. I'm just suggesting that we can have civil dialogue even if we don't like the other team.
The animosity that goes on is really disappointing, because this could develop into a rivalry as good as Cubs-Cardinals over time. While I don't root for the Cards, what I love about the rivalry is that it's not unusual for Cubs fans and Cardinals fans to be able to talk baseball without posturing or attacking each other. I'd really like to see the Cubs-Brewers develop into this.
Note to Brewers fans: I am not calling anyone out with this post -- there are jerks on both sides and good fans on both sides.
I have friends that are Brewers fans and can have good conversations with -- I suspect many Cubs fans do and a lot of Brewers fans have Cub fan friends. Especially those of us that live within an hour of the state line. A few of us have had a nice chat with brewfan2 tonight -- that doesn't mean he won't be rooting for Dempster to get rocked tomorrow or we won't be rooting for Parra to get shelled -- but the discussion doesn't need to get ugly.
I realize there are going to be people that disagree with me and will say so. That's the nature of a blog. Please try to keep it civil, though . . . .
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I was incredibly happy tonight.
the section we sat in was about 75/25 Cubs to Brewers fans. I was shocked at how the fans cheered but it didnt get personal between people. By the 8th a lot of Brewer fans were leaving… so that even helped the parking lot situation.
Last year it was vicious. So yeah TB 405 tonight!

I went over to the Brewers site after this place slowed down...
...and that was a bad idea. I was mocking a bit about them over HERE, and didn’t think it ws that big of a deal, but it didn’t sit too well with them. For the most part, I don’t mind going over there or them coming over here.

I cruised some of those posts at Bizarro BCB
and man, do they have thin skins. The only thing that I saw there that was a smidge over the line was SWL’s cheese grater post, and even that you have to take in context (it was in reply to a picture of a dead bear cub lying in the road). ANY praise of the Cubs or criticism of the Brewers from people from our board was seen as evil evil trolling, when our posters were being quite civil compared to the trolls that come out of the woodwork over here.

This definitely sums up my experience with the Evil BCB as well.
Many of them – particularly the regular posters – are thin-skinned, insecure, reactionary types who will not hesitate to flame, or at least take cheap shots, at Cubs fans who go over there with even the most civil of intentions. (And, if you make even the slightest effort to fight back, you’ll be banned at the drop of blue and yellow hat .)
Moreover, many of them display that most disturbing of traits in seeming to take more enjoyment out of hating the Cubs than supporting the Briewers. Are there good-natured, reasonable, knowledgable baseball fans over there? Probably. They sure are quiet, though.
In any case, when all is said and done, now is not the ideal time to strike up a conversation on that or any other Brewers blog. If the Cubs had just suffered a couple of crushing losses, very few (if any) of us would welcome the thoughts of a Brew Crew fan, no matter how civil and rational.
Bottom line: There’s a bona fied pennant race going on right now, so I really don’t give a rat’s furry ass what they’re saying or thinking. I’m going to hunker down in my foxhole and let this thing play out. We can resume diplomatic relations during the off season.

Lotta hatred for Big Z.
i guess I might hate him for being so good. Wishing he took one in the nose rather than Young is a bit over the top. Injury is one thing I ahve never rooteed for. I have acknowledged when it helps this team but rooting for injusy, IMO, is not even rooting for baseball.

my favorite...
was their comment about Big Z starring down Durham and saying how “classy” it was.
But yet they forget that their fans cheered when DLee fouled a ball off his leg. What is that? That was clear, what Z was doing with Durham, only Z knows, maybe he asked Durham if he was ok? But in their eyes because it was Z, he was probably trying to show Durham up.
Unreal.

As I said on the gamethread last night
I’m not going to go out of my way to be mean, but I’m also not going to worry about what fans of another team think.
Mostly, they’re just jealous. I honestly believe that it’s an inferiority complex that the Suds and the W-Sox share.

To be fair
I don’t think it’s a good idea to post at their site after a deflating loss (for them). Same if it happened to us, them comming over here to “chat” wouldn’t be my first choice ( or second…).
And in the end, it’s not even that bad to “not be civil”. You know, it’s always fun to kind of hate your rival, at least during the season! I don’t mean to start insults or anything like that, they just aren’t my first choice of people to chat baseball with simply because they are our biggest rival right now. In the end you want them to do bad simply because that means your team has a better chance to get into the playoffs. So if that’s the starting point, how good can it really get?

I agree
Rubbing salt in really deep and fresh wounds doesn’t help a situation all ready on the verge of all out childish hatred.
I have cruised VEB, evil BCB, and SSS and have read some honest and sometimes humorous posts about our beloved Cubs. I have also read some stupid untrue childish attacks at those blogs. Seems thats the mix visitors from those sites would find when they skim the posts here. I just say pick the right time to discuss things when visiting the other blogs.

I’ve never had any trouble with them, either in SF or here. They were very nice to me when I was out there for the 1989 NLCS.
Of course, they won, so they could be nice. But then, the Padres won in ‘84 and Padres fans were jerks.

I think they pretty much assume that any Cubs fans that post on their site are trolls
automatically. Maybe from experience, or maybe that is just how they are, but it happened to me too at first, til I proved that I wasn’t there to talk trash. Some of them still hate on me a bit, but others have come around and can have good discussion. I actually like to check out their site when we are playing them or in a close division race against them just to see their point of view, but it is a very lonely place for a Cubs fan I will admit.

But seriously, those guys at the Brewers site need to grow up and realize that not all Cub fans are rude and obnoxious just because one or two are. They mocked Al yesterday for calling for peace. This diary is likely to be mocked over there too.

I like this one the best
Dude went to Mondays game, and he says
Brewers’ female fans are hotter than Cubs’ female fans
-Yost looked like a genious for going to Russell Branyan in the 7th
-Pinella looked like a moron benching Kosuke Fukudome for Reed Johnson just to take advantage of the right-handed hitter up against a southpaw starter
I counted 12 rather questionable calls on the evening, of which only 3 went the Brewers’ way…most were balls and strikes, but the corner umpires goofed on calls at their bases (only the second base umpire was perfect)
then another of their blogger’s has an article called
Ned F’ing Yost

I was born and raised in....
the Joliet area, but got a good job offer in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and have lived in Fond du Lac for the last 20 years. My Chicago sports loyalties has, and will remain for the rest of my life.
I had to endure all the Bear/Packer slamming, but givin the intense rilvary between the teams, it’s understandable. It’s always been good natured, but the Brett Favre years didn’t make it very easy.
For the last two seasons the Brewers are enjoying some success. This has brought out all the bandwagon fans that previously could care less about the team, which shows in the recent gain in attendence at Miller Park. Where were all these fans before the Brewers got good? These are the same fans that give the rest of us the most trouble on the boards. They don’t know how to deal with winning, and are verbally attacking others on the internet instead of just going with the flow of the season.
by montecarlo on Jul 30, 2008 5:11 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I've noticed this, too
On the Chicago Tribune message boards at the beginning of the season, they had Brewers fans ripping Cubs fans apart. Since the Cubs have constantly stayed ahead of the Brewers, these trolls seemed to have disappeared. I’m pretty sure if the Brewers ever take over 1st place, they will come back with their garbage. I don’t know if this is a new thing, or if they did the same when they were in the AL Central. Maybe old White Sox fans could let us know. They hadn’t really been contenders since before the internet became available to the common man, so it’s hard to tell.

Nope.
You take the high road. If you show up uninvited at your friend’s house and it isn’t a good time, its bad manners to just hang out and make fun of him for his water heater blowing up. Go away and come back to talk at a better time. There are going to be times that it isn’t a good idea to be over at our friend’s house on the Brewers blog posting. This is one of those times. Always remember that it is their house and you are a guest there. Act like you would want them to act. How annoying would it be if we had just lost two in a row to the Brewers at Wrigley with Z and Harden pitching and the Brew fans were all over this blog asking us how we were doing with it. They could have the best intentions and they would be instigating. Just use your head and remember that you are a guest, so have good manners. Post again a couple of weeks after the sweep… :)

We covered this before
It is NOT the same as going to someone’s house.
Cubs fans paid the same price for their tickets that Brewers fans did. The metaphor of “having manners in someone’s house” does not apply.
You are NOT a guest. You are a paying customer and you have the same rights to scream, cheer, taunt and boo that you have when you pay for tickets at Wrigley.

knowing as much as you do must be a real burden. Must be why you only show up to argue with me. But hey, I am honored that you spend so much time trying to debunk my theories and opinions.
Unfortunately, assuming that this individual has the latter of your motives in mind when applying this term to hismself is safer than you think. Not to mention, a person who is educated enough on the meaning of the words which he/she uses in public, surely would have known about the common “misconception” (as you paint it) regarding this term. Knowing this, wouldn’t one cease to apply this screen name for fear that it might be misconstrude?
Perhaps not. And then again, perhaps I am correct that this indivisual was being a dumbass. Either way, if Jeff Sackmann is such a brilliant man, wouldn’t he seek to minimize the amount of contovercial material used on his site? He certainly bans Cub fans for being fans…
But hey Shaq, would you be you if you weren’t preaching solely to me? Probably not. As for my affinity for speaking of that which I do not know, I suppose that is your misinformed opinion and you are entitled to that, no matter how narcissistic that makes you.

Burning oil rained down from the sky and cooked everything it touched. I could only hide myself and cry as my goats were consumed by the fiery black liquid death. In the midst of the chaos, I could swear that I heard my goats screaming for help. As quickly as they had come, the infidels were gone. It was on that day I put a jihad on them. It's really the press that misuses that word
Terrorists love it when the press calls their causes a jihad. It’s like calling their cause righteous.

I suppose
that this point doesn’t really discrdit my assertation. The term may be widely misused…but misused nonetheless. My assumption was that this individual was not applying this screen name as he/she is on a journey (or in a struggle) to quit smoking, rather to be humourous in their use of it.
Of course I may be wrong but in this day and age, I would have avoided potential conflict by not using a term that much of America associates with the death of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.
but hey, that is just me.

The point is simply
that the word doesn’t mean what you think it does to everyone, and in fact that a lot of people would see you saying, “Jihad means terrorism” as being as offensive as saying “All Muslims are terrorists”.
I’m not defending his use of the screen name, who knows what that poster’s motivations are.
by Wreckard on Jul 30, 2008 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is fine
but my misconception is not uncommon. therefore, my asumption on this person’s motives, is not unwarranted. I satnd corrected as to the real meaning of “jihad” however I am not even close to alone, and cannot be blamed in fact, since the media has used this term in this very way since 2001.
that is my point.

From what I am reading it seems that right or wrong, kinky reggae see no problem in calling someone who may or may not have a problem something I personally would be offended by if he called me that.
But I find it ironic when someone points out his complaint of a word he takes offense when someone points out that there are other meanings. That he says they are wrong.

Three men from the Chicago area – ages 25, 26 and 34 – will be spending a little more time in Wisconsin today after being taken into custody for substantial battery in the beating of a 24-year-old West Allis man after Tuesday night’s Milwaukee Brewers-Chicago Cubs game at Miller Park.
According to police, the West Allis man threw a beer can at a bus full of Cubs’ fans, three of whom left the bus about 10:39 p.m. while it was stuck in traffic near the stadium.
The man told police the three men beat him up, knocking a tooth out, cutting his lower lip and leaving him with pain in his jaw. The West Allis man was ticketed for disorderly conduct and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspects could face felony charges in the case, according to police. Milwaukee police said the 34-year-old also punched his sister in the mouth while she attempted to break up the fight.
Although she refused medical treatment and did not want to prosecute, the man received a municipal ticket for assault and battery, in addition to the felony charge that he faces.
The Cubs defeated the Brewers, 7-1.

The Cubs and Cardinals rivalry
Has history behind it. The Cubs and Brewers rivalry has what… a decade? I don’t think there will ever be a huge rivalry between the two teams. Think about it. If the time comes where the Brewers and/or Cubs have a stretch of bad seasons where they are in the basement of the division, the rivalry will not exist. If the Cubs are in last place, we’re not going to care about the Brewers, but we will still relish beating the Cardinals.
Besides, it boggles the mind that the Cubs and Brewers don’t really battle over a fanbase like the Cubs and Cardinals do. The entire central part of Illinois is pretty much a battleground. The Brewers pretty much have the entire state of Wisconsin.

Great post Badger
a much needed reminder that it’s always best to take the high road.
I do like to look at the other team’s game threads but I’ll never post because I know it’s generally just inviting trouble-esp. after a big Cubs win.
One thing that I’ve been genuinely surprised about lately is how much hatred there seems to be toward Cub fans in general. I guess I live in a kind of provincial “Cubs world” but I never realized there was this much animosity towards us and I’d seriously like to know exactly where it comes from. I know jealousy probably plays some part but that also seems a little too cliched.
by bluekoolaide on Jul 30, 2008 9:00 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Thanks, blue k
I think jealousy is a factor, but there are also some “bad apples” that make the rest of us look bad. The larger the fan base, the greater the number of bad apples—although the percentage might be the same, it gives a different perception.
by Shanghai Badger on Jul 30, 2008 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wrigley Field
I think there is a perception that fans at Wrigley Field are not there for baseball. I’m not saying this is true, but the perception is there that Wrigley Field is a frat-like party atmosphere. Add this perception with the many telecasts on WGN and it equals the kind of fanbase that Marty Brennaman so famously described.
I’ve been to Wrigley many times, and to some extent the perception is reality. However, I would say that it is no different then any other stadium, it just gets more attention.

Can't disagree with anything you said.
I guess it’s part of the price paid for being “popular”.
by bluekoolaide on Jul 30, 2008 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
This perception is as old as what...
...since the Cubs have had “media” success over the last 15 years or so?
I think the silly “frat-party” is attributed to no less than three factors:
—Lovable Losers title: everyone likes to go out and cheer for the annual underdog
—Atmosphere: there isn’t really anywhere else in the country where a stadium is plopped down right in the middle of a neighborhood, jam-packed with 40,000 fans every day
—Day games: as a casual fan, day games can be a lot more enjoyable than night games; skipping out on work or school, sunshine, America’s pasttime, beer, food, etc. Night games don’t offer this same atmosphere
And honestly, you can say this about most fan bases: there are the causal fans that care only when the team is winning, and those that are die-hards and care just as much about the three game sweeps as the three game losses.
My $0.02.

i think it’s interesting that there is a perception that fans at wrigley are not there for the baseball. to me, the lack of a giant video board and all the constant distractions that accompany a game at most mlb parks makes it much easier to pay attention to the game. i’d say that fans at wrigley pay MORE attention to the game because the game is the only thing going on.

The animosity towards Cubs fans
is pretty bad in most areas, since we attend in droves in most major league parks.
In California, only San Francisco is tolerant. (Why am I not surprised?) The atmosphere in Los Angeles is OK…in Anaheim…if the Cubs played there more, I could see it getting a bit rough. (I’ve only seen one game there) And the scene in San Diego, as I have posted many times before—is really bad. They seem to hate Cubs fans more than Dodgers fans.
And all of this over a team that has won….well, you know. Last time I checked, we are not the Yankees.
But some strange poster at the other BCB was making that comparison. (?)

However, I have been to Rays/Yankees games at the Trop. The 3 game Cubs series was (by far) the best attended series in franchise history. Over 120,000 for the three game weekday set, at least half if not more Cub fans.
The Superstation has created quite a national, well-traveled fan base. I believe lots of people want on the bandwagon when we finally break through. I’m sure some of the resentment stems from that.

Please stop, fellow Kenoshan
I don’t mind joking, but I’d like to keep it nice for at least this thread.

Cant speak for others....
but you have showed thru your posts in the last week, that you arent a troll. You know you stuff and respect the game of baseball. Much like Dave the Cards fans does. It seems that there at least a few others that share my opinion.
I cant guartee that for everyone. As the pointed earlier in the post some posters tend to attack brewers and cubs fans if they dont agree with his/her own opinion.

I know you meant to reply to brewfan2...
Only reason I’m posting a reply is to eliminate confusion for those who might not realize that I’m a Cubs fan.

You cannot compare them
The Cardinals have a ton of history. They have had a lot of success. They have won several championships.
The Cubs have a ton of history. They have had a lot of success. They have won over 10,000 games. They have been to the playoffs five times since 1982.
The Brewers haven’t been to the playoffs since 1982. They have traditionally sucked.
The Brewers fans I know and the ones I know from the internet “judge” Cubs fans as arrogant fans of a pathetic, choking team. That doesn’t typically sit well when the franchise they follow can only be described as “putrid”. I know they’re good now, but they haven’t been in 25 years. I don’t care how many prospects they have either. Their rotation will be a joke next year, just like their defense and their bullpen.

I'll say it to their faces.
I’m from Racine and I know a ton of Brewer fans. I typically don’t like to get into “internet tough guy” discussions at other sites (except Fark hehe) or start trouble on other blogs. What I wrote is just my opinion anyway. I’ve certainly been wrong before, though I don’t believe I am this time.

Actually
I was being kinda sarcastic but okay. It was a knock on the other site and their tolerance for anything anti-Brewer…TOUGH GUY!
:)
Calm down.

Wow
Where did that come from? Looks like you didn’t read the fanpost title.;)
The cards have a great history. However, over the last 100 years the Cubs don’t have a history that’s even close to comparable. Sure they have won 10,000 games, but zero championships mean that success has been hard to come by. It’s like saying the Germans have a successful military because they can compete in World Wars. (Sorry I’m a history teacher)
The Brewers have had little success within the last 25 years, but that has to do more with salary cap, and the smallest market in all of baseball, more than anything else.
As for next years rotation, it’s still far too early to tell. Gallardo will be back, Parra will be a good number 2-3, and if Sheets, Sabathia, and Gagne all go, that frees up a lot of money for free agents. Also, you don’t know what kind of money Attanasio is willing to throw at Sheets and/or Sabathia.
The future is bright for both teams, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Agreed
And, the Brewers have been to the World Series a lot more recently.
Although, I do disagree with one point - it wasn’t just Bud’s lack of spending that held them down. They made some bad personnel decisions, too. Look at the Twins - they don’t spend; they just win.

Correct on the last point... Sal Bando did us no favors for almost a decade

The Brewers, led by Bud Selig
spent over a decade complaining about the system rather than actually trying to win ballgames. I felt very sorry for Brewer fans during that period. It kind of poisoned the fan base—fans didn’t want to cheer for a team when the owner himself said they had no chance of winning and that the taxpayers needed to cough up the money for a new stadium anyway.
Thankfully, for Brewer fans and the state of Wisconsin, those days are over and the Brewers are actually trying to win these days. The Sabathia trade is a great example of what the Brewers need to do to win. And I’d still expect the Brewers to trade Fielder this off-season for a young pitcher (Matt Cain maybe?) and either move Braun there or promote Gamel and play him at first.
Got to admit, the Brewers farm system kicks all over ours at this point, and that allowed you to do stuff like the Sabathia trade. That we managed to get Harden anyway is a tribute to our GM.
Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

One last appeal
This post is about to drop off the list, so I don’t know how many more will see it—but before you post a reply, please read the original.
You don’t have to agree, but let’s be civil—cripes, there was even an off-topic argument here. NOT what I was hoping for!

Amen.
I just got done reading the entire comment log – I still have no idea what that was about. Anyways, Shanghai, thanks for the guide – I think the whole point of the SB Nation was to encourage dialog between different groups of fans. And while most of us are Cubs fans here, I’d like to think we’d be a welcoming bunch, who, while we might like to joke around with some good folks from Milwaukee or St. Louis, know what constitutes crossing the line between a joke and insulting rhetoric.
