His last outing was solid!
And he’s good for an inning or two, unlike some of these other dudes who are like a lucky batter or two at best!

oh. nope. not a ball, then.
it’s not like it’d make the batter swing at empty air. and if he did, it’s still not a strike

Sure, you have to have contact with the slab when you are pitching....

yes, that is true
but if you break contact with the bases empty, no harm no foul

But if you break contact when you are delivering the ball.....
what he is doing is pitching from a foot in front of the rubber.

the Cubs should give the film to the umps. it is hard to see it real time, but anyone would throw harder if they can pick up their back leg before they release the ball!

Rule 8.01(b)
“Comment: With no runners on base, the pitcher is not required to come to a complete stop when using the Set Position. If, however, in the umpire’s judgment, a pitcher delivers the ball in a deliberate effort to catch the batter off guard, this delivery shall be deemed a quick pitch, for which the penalty is a ball. I hear Tony La Russa may bat the Pitcher spot cleanup
The game had to be a day game, per the CBA,
because the Cubs are going east by 2 TZs. 5 pm local time is the day/night cut-off. So, the game had to start before 5 pm PDT, but the Giants didn’t want a “true” day game at 1 pm PDT.

SF - Cubs Games
Hi—just got back and (for what it’s worth) wanted to give a brief report on the 3 SF nite games I went to. A lot of Cubs fans on BART, at the ballpark, everywhere. Sat in their “view level” behind home. Good natured Giant fans overall and most didnt really seem all that upset when we took over the park at times. A wave try by SF fans last nite was disappointing, but oh well. Lots of expensive beer, garlic fries, etc.
Funny Santo story. KNBR is the Giants flagship station and sports talk radio. Before today’s game, they had a “Sound Like Santo” contest. Included some of Ronnie’s classic “oooooh no”, “gee whiz”, etc. It was poking fun, but not mean spirited and kinda fun. Many Cub fans competed but first place went to a 9-year old girl.
Three out of four would be nice.

Question.....
If a player is announced as a pinch hitter but is pulled before he bats, does that count as an “appearence” in a game?

but if Cal Ripkin did that during his streak
would that game have counted as an actual appearance or game played?
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
Ignore my snark.
The official rule:
“A consecutive game playing streak shall be extended if the player plays one half inning on defense, or if he completes a time at bat by reaching base or being put out. A pinch running appearance only shall not extend the streak. If a player is ejected from a game by an umpire before he can comply with the requirements of this rule, his streak shall continue.”

Before Edmonds: 24-16, (.600); With Edmonds: 26-18 (.591)
Edmonds with Cubs: .282 / .370 / .563
JMO
There are reports that scouts are saying he’s lost something due to overuse. I read the same thing last October. Once a reliever’s arm is “dead”, it’s tough to recharge him during the season.
I’m wondering if being shut down entirely for 2-3 weeks might help him.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
And I've heard that
all the talk about him maybe going to the ASG has made him lose focus. We will probably never know.
That may be true....
like the “dead arm” syndrome early in the year?
by crazymountain on Jul 3, 2008 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions
BB said it could be him tipping pitches...no way.
He is falling behind and becoming predictable. AND his fastball is no longer lively as he is over-throwing. His fastball flattens out. Same thing happens to Z when he over throws. Marmol is anxious and over-throwing because he can’t find the strike zone. With some intelligent help, he can work through this.
Our problem is we have a pitching coach who can not fix him!
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
I agree that he (Marmol) will work through it
I just think with a better pitching coach, this problem would be solved faster.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
The human body is not designed to...
...consistently repeating a movement or set of motions. Players get hot and players get cold. It doesn’t always mean something – it could just be a stretch where a player’s “stuff” is off, or it could just be luck. There may be nothing to fix. He’s not a pitching machine.
well, he's going to get a week for the ASG anyway
Hopefully we won’t need him in StL and he can come back more fresh after the ASG
These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance"
What if it's not his delivery?
Maybe he’s got a “tell.” Someone figured him out.
"Whoo, boy! Next time around, bring me back my stomach!" -Jack Brickhouse
Nah
he’s wild. He’s hitting people and missing the plate then overcompensating by throwing fat over the middle. It’s not a tell, any pitcher pitching that way would be in trouble.
These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance"
Yeah I suppose that's true
I wish it was something easy though. Darn it all!
"Whoo, boy! Next time around, bring me back my stomach!" -Jack Brickhouse
This is what we were talking about in the thread
this afternoon. He misses with two sliders so they know that the fastball is coming and then he gets it up and they blow it out of the park.
ARGH!
This really comes down to the teacher.
A ton of our guys can never fix things, and I think that leads to the pitching coach..
Devin Hester, you are rediculous! -Jeff Joniak
I heard Plesac talking about it
Supposedly it is a 2 step process they are going through. I guess they fixed the mechanics, now they are going after the location. Up and over the middle I am guessing is not where they planned.
Here's a question
Why was Ascanio still in to start the inning in a one-run game?
Didn’t notice right away b/c on the phone.
b/c Lieber is invisable to Lou?
