Would we be in 1st right now without Edmonds?

With the Cards bearing down on us, our woes on the road, and the recent injury bug... would we still be in first place without Jim Edmonds right now?

Who would've thunk that he'd be hitting .294 as a Cub in 35 games, with 24 RBI and slugging .594... after hitting just .178 in San Diego.

His defense has been what you would expect, even though Pie would give us better range. But, if we had stuck with Pie (which a large opinion of this fan base wanted, myself included), I seriously doubt we would've gotten this production from the plate.

Let's do a quick recap of Edmonds big hits:

May 30 vs COL
He goes 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBI in our incredible 10-9 comeback win at home. That was the day the lights came on for Jimmy (the first RBIs he drove in as a Cub)

Jun 1 vs COL
He goes 2-3 with a 2B, a 3B, a BB, and 2 RBI in a 5-3 win... driving in more deciding runs in a close game

June 2 @ SD
The very next day, he goes 2-4 with a pair of 2Bs and 2 RBI in a 7-6 win on the road... again, driving in more deciding runs in a close game

June 12 vs ATL
He goes 1-3, with 2 RBI... a key sac fly in the 7th, and a game tying HR in the bottom of the 9th to send us to extras in a 3-2 win. Again... more game deciding runs.

July 2 @ SF
He goes 2-3 with 2 walks and a 2 run HR in another 1 run victory (6-5). Once again... game deciding runs

Now... that's 5 victories that we wouldn't have gotten without Edmonds bat. Maybe... just maybe in the platoon, Felix Pie comes up with a big hit in one or two of those situations, but can you realistically expect that after the struggles we saw from him at the plate?

I don't think we win those 5 games without Edmonds, and we're in 2nd place looking up at St. Louis.

I won't forget that one... don't worry :)

But, I just wanted to focus in on the close ballgames we won with his bat.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

I’m just saying that game might not have finished with a close score, but it was 4-1 at that point and without that home run could have been a completely diff. game. -just as important

This is a great story

everyone (including myself) thought that Edmonds was done, and we were all very skeptical when Hendry picked him up. Now Edmonds is making Hendry look like a genius.

To answer your question, no we wouldn’t be in first without him. We really had no other option when Reed went on the DL, and Edmonds has really torn it up as a Cub. I’m glad he’s on our side

Credit to Hendry an Co.

for developing a very serviceable platoon in players taken from the “scrap heap” with Johnson and Edmonds.

Being a Brewer fan...

I would say that Edmonds has been a huge pickup. Wrigley field is the perfect field for his high flies and some of those home runs wouldn’t have been gone at Petco.

After saying that, I think the Cubbies would still have been in first without him. He had a lot of big time hits, but he is replaceable and soon will be replaced. He’s been a great find and come September will be a better option to come off the bench than Darryl Ward.

Jim Edmonds has been very important...ditto Reed Johnson

Bottom line the Cubs wouldn’t be where they are without this duo. I have strong suspicion that both have added significantly in the dugout and clubhouse as well.

Pitching is KING. We don't add a frontline starting pitcher and a quality bullpen arm then this season will have yet another sad conclusion.

by MDBNIU on Jul 3, 2008 11:27 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I can't emphasize enough how much Edmonds has done for the Cubs.

At the same time, I wouldn’t presume to know what would have happened had he hit well with the Padres and not been available. We may have gotten David DeJesus who is also hitting well. We may have stuck with Pie and found that he turned his season around after given the same time Edmonds got to turn his around (twice as long as Pie).

The Cubs are still a good team, even without Edmonds, just as we’ve found we are a good team, even without Soriano. I think if Edmonds hadn’t been available, yes, we’d have found a way to be in first. But he’s sure been nice and somewhat cured Lou’s obsession with getting a LH power hitter.

Pie

If you can’t trust the judgment of Lou Piniella and his coaching staff on their assessment of Felix Pie, then at least have faith in your own eyes. Major league pitchers were eating Pie alive. He had very little shot of carving out a major league existence with that hitting approach of his. Hendry, Piniella and company actually did Pie a great favor by sending him down to the minors. They gave Pie opportunity to revamp his approach and thereby salvage another chance (maybe) at the major league level.

Pitching is KING. We don't add a frontline starting pitcher and a quality bullpen arm then this season will have yet another sad conclusion.

by MDBNIU on Jul 3, 2008 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Edmonds was getting eaten alive, too

and you, yourself, said his swing was too slow to catch up (if I recall correctly). That’s why I don’t trust my eyes or the eyes of anyone who isn’t a professional scout.

Also, it’s wrong to misrepresent “the judgment of Lou and his coaching staff” as if that was monolithic. We know there was internal debate on how Lou was playing Pie, with some in Cubs management urging regular playing time and an extended shot.

My point isn’t Pie, per se, (been there, done that one). My point is that there were other options, some of which may have been more likely to turn out a boon than Edmonds was. The Cubs core is good enough that I wouldn’t say w/o Edmonds we wouldn’t be in first place. That’s not a knock on all the Edmonds has done; it’s a reflection of my high estimation of the overall 40-man roster and it’s strong team core.

by DGU on Jul 3, 2008 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well...

It is my strong opinion that Lou Piniella ended up doing Felix Pie a great service. Pie wasn’t going to hit major league pitching based on what he showed last year and this year in a Cub uniform. Sending him back down provides opportunity to redevelop a hitting approach that has chance of working at this level.

Pitching is KING. We don't add a frontline starting pitcher and a quality bullpen arm then this season will have yet another sad conclusion.

I think if you go back

and look at games that were in critical division settings, (i.e. the difference between losing a game and winning a game in the standings), then Edmonds has definitely been the difference in the Cubs staying in first place. The biggest lead the Cubs have had in the division is 4.5 games. St. Louis keeps winning. Many games were salvaged with Ed’s proven bat. At the same time, I don’t think this is huge pick-up, so Kudos to Hendry! In actuality, getting Ed, even though at the time he stunk, was a no brainer. If Hendry hadn’t done this, Ed might have ended up doing this for someone else. When you, (the GM), have a choice between a proven veteran bat, and an unproven one with great talent- you always go with the proven bat…

He's been a huge contributor...

...and I’m glad he’s on the team. There. I said it. Whether or not the Cubs would still be in first without him is hard to say. (Sabremagicians, help?) But he’s proved a lot since he got here – and he keeps on proving himself. Who would have thought he could play everyday (in RJ’s absence) and still produce? Impressive, Jimbo Ballgame, impressive.

I’ve said many times that if I were wrong about Edmonds, I’d say so. I was wrong. He’s clearly got something left, and seems to be relishing being part of a winning team.

Good job, Jim Hendry.

The thing about Jimmy that I find interesting

is that he almost seems to have more power to the opposite field. Maybe it’s just an illusion from pitchers pitching him away so much, but it seems that when he pulls the ball, he gets on top of it more and puts too much top spin on the ball for it to get out.

Just an observation

Yeah, it seems like...

...if he hits the ball to the right side, it’s always on the ground (and usually right to the second baseman). When he goes oppo, though, he’s able to elevate the ball.

That home run last night was amazing – it looked like a foul ball coming off the bat, but it was hit so high that it just kept drifting and drifting until it fell in the bleachers. He didn’t even seem to hit it that hard.

And his follow-through

With that “sort-of” homer hop always misleads me. It appears as if he thinks he didn’t quite get all of it, and
kinda hops in frustration. Then, mere moments later, he is high-fiving guys at the plate. Amazing is right.

The Much Needed #5 Hitter

Lou was right to insist on more of a slugger type for the #5 spot, so Dome could be more serviceable as the #2 hitter. It seemed that the lineup really clicked once Edmonds started coming through, and I can’t wait to see the offense at full strength again with ARam and Soriano.

Kudos also to Gerald Perry for revising Edmonds’ batting stance and getting him going again!

by CaliCub on Jul 3, 2008 1:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

Part of the big reason to get a #2 and a #5 LH hitter was to avoid pitches off the outside corner to Derrek Lee, but since Edmonds heated up and became the bat Lou wanted, Lee has really struggled with just that pitch and struggled in general until recently. Lou’s reasoning was totally wrong and we should be glad that his reasoning didn’t cost us trade chips to get a different LH hitter than Edmonds. For those first two weeks that Edmonds wasn’t hitting, there were a lot of Griffey to the Cubs rumors, and this is the biggest reason I appreciate what Edmonds has done. He saved us from a worse “Proven Bat.”

For those still undonfortable with Edmonds in Blue Pinstripes.

My best friend is a Cardinal fan, and Edmonds was his favorite player for a long time. He has had a very hard time dealing with Edmonds playing for the Cubs.

So anyway, we were hanging out one day a couple weeks a ago, I was watching a Cubs game while he perused the internet. During one of the commercials I happened to come upon a SciFi channel marathon of the Incredible Hulk.

Since that day, he and I have referred to Edmonds as “Lou Ferrigno” when talking to one another (calling him “The Hulk” just didn’t fit).

I suggest trying that.

by Snake Plisskin on Jul 3, 2008 2:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Ever since I found out how much it's tearing up Cards fans, I've been pro-Edmonds.

Also, I think that going by the stats he’s put up since he joined the team, Edmonds has been the best hitter on the Cubs this year. He’s got a better OPS with the Cubs than any of our regulars.

Anyone ever notice Hendry excels in a lot of these smaller deals.

I still think Dempster was his biggest coup first as a closer and now as a starter but Edmonds may rank up there.

3 things I like about Edmonds

1. Obviously his production.

2. He seems to realize that this is his last chance and is playing his butt off.

3. Him coming over and playing well has eliminated CF as a need as we head to the trade deadline so Hendry can put more eggs in the pitching basket.
