Quick question
I asked this in the previous thread; you may have missed it during the transition here.
How much better (if at all) is Rammy’s D this season as opposed to, say, 3 years ago?
It SEEMS better, but, to parapharse Hamlet, “Nay, I know not seems.”
I don’t know a whole lot about defensive metrics. Thanks

But I can tell you that his errors have gone down & his fielding % up over the last three years, as his legs got progressively more healthy.

He had a spectacular year defensively last season...
...and has been worse this season. Right now I’d say he’s about average defensively at third, which would be an improvement over where he was a few years ago.
Wow,
I guess the “naked eye” told me that he was having a great year defensively…
BTW, are fielders “penalized” statistically if their pitchers K a lot of guys? Fewer chances per 9 innings?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
It would be a very modest effect, and only in seasonal totals.
You’d see fewer chances, but normally when comparing players you do runs per a standardized number of chances – generally the average number of chances for a full-time player at that position.
First!

Honestly seeing him and Z warm up at the bullpen before the game, I got up right to the front. I got to watch them. Heard the glove popping… Cubbiegirl I dialed up…. and said something like omg you will never guess i am right near the bullpen and can see our boy. this is so cool. we giggled like school girls.
Then I started to take pictures and my hands were tremoring abit. So a Brewer fan took a few of them for me. Until I composed myself a bit more. It was such a neat expeience.

I'm really curious how his defense will look outside of Fenway.
Not that Manny’s good, but the Green Monster makes him look even worse.
which he will
i’m in boston – the one game i went to manny hit a game-tying two run HR over the monster in the bottom of the 8th…i for one am sad to see him go but i’m not sad AT ALL to see bay outta the NL central

You know, if I were a brewers negative fan I would point out that...
A) My manager is a moron
B) My right fielder (hart) continually plays singles into doubles/triples (geez, he pulls up on EVERYTHING
C) My catcher can’t throw out my grandma (unless it is a pitch out, which I am surprised that they didn’t call ON EVERY PITCH
D) No matter how many times this “young” team mentions how much they “learned” by choking on the pressure last year, they still haven’t learned how to handle a big series (and bull hooey to any talking head that mentions that there are no big series in July)
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah." - Abe Simpson

I agree with A.
Hart is a pretty decent fielder but needs to take his head out of his ass.
C) Im pretty sure that Kendall leads the league in throwing out runners.
D) they have been awful this series but they did pretty well in a pressure filled Cardinals series.
Honest question...
If I’d told you at the beginning of the ASB that at the end of the Cubs series you’d have a winning record against the Central Division stretch (Cards, Astros and Cubs), wouldn’t you have taken it?
I recognize that this Cubs series is disappointing, but the sweep of the Cardinals had to be satisfying.
The playoff order isn’t determined in August, and your rotation should still be solid for a stretch run with most of your games at home in September.
It’s up to the Cubs, IMO, to make their run now until the end of August and hold on down the stretch.
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow from the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind...

Right. “For Dlee tonight”. Please refer to earlier sensible statements. DLee’s numbers tonight don’t determine the output. But his contributions certainly do.
You all have me hating DLee here
I don’t. However, I have been watching him closely, as I am sure you have. TO ME, something just seems off. All of the ground balls…All of the balls in his wheel house that used to be driven out of the park (or somewhere with authority) are just now deep fly balls. Without analysis, this just becomes just a love fest during wins, or a pity party during losses. I am just looking for some critical opinions here. Not people who can’t look beyond the surface.
Just give some thought to the player that you are watching in these at bats, and tell me that he reminds you of the guy we have watched scorch balls the last couple of years.

You're losing track of the thread
Not accusing you of being a hater. A good at bat is just that, whether by a player you think is scuffling or one you think isn’t (as in the drewish one’s opinion). You asked “Can we stop with the praising of players who have ‘great at bats’ when all they do is work a count full and then do nothing with it?”
We disagree with your premise; we don’t question your love of DLee. Good work by somebody who’s been King GIDP is still good work… and maybe signs of a turn of fortune.
Perhaps I picked a bad time to harp about the "great at bat" comments (sorry hbcg)
but I have been seeing them for everyone lately. It started bothering me in the last loss to the Marlins. The last at bat of the game, people were praising Dome for a great at bat. To end the game. Big deal. Admittedly, DLee’s at bat was nice…in that he didn’t strike out. But he very nearly GIDP again (one more foot and Hall gets 3rd base and whips it to first to get Lee).

na....have you seen their starter pitch counts this week?
no way all 3 of them make it through the season without an injury….not that i wish that on anyone, but maddox is doing a terrible job of coming out an calming them down…a lot of high pressure pitches, where some of our guys have had high counts, but not high stress pitches
This is true...
However, have they been doing this consistently? It is hard to predict an injury
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah." - Abe Simpson
then why do you think you can?
’’If somebody had told me we were going to lose Soriano for eight weeks, lose [Carlos] Zambrano and Kerry Wood for a couple of weeks apiece, and then at the same time lose [Reed] Johnson, and then when we played the American League not have a DH [then-injured Daryle Ward], and be in first place by two games, I’d tell you we were pretty fortunate.’’ Lou Piniella (7/23/08)

STRETCH!
Outside of sue369’s 50+ comments here about the Sox, sue369 doesn’t give a damn about the Sox.
Hey, Cap'n Ahab....
why don’t you put these things in context? Since March 16, Sue has had 16733 comments. That’s .005%.
I’ve had 36 comments that have the word “Sox” in them (of course, that could include the RED Sox, but you’re way too myopic about that to notice). My total# of comments? 10669, which makes my Sox (Red or White?) obsession .003 percent!
YOU, however, have 1312 comments here, and they’re ALL ABOUT THE WHITE SOX. This is not a White Sox board. This is a Cubs board.
On the White Sox board? 7 comments. SEVEN COMMENTS! Some fan you are, you don’t spend ANY TIME on the board for YOUR OWN TEAM!
Furthermore, all your comments about the White Sox aren’t even really ABOUT the White Sox, but about how, somehow, the White Sox don’t get the respect “they deserve”. You wanna know what, buddy? If the White Sox need respect, they’ll have to go out and earn it. I’m sorry that they somehow don’t GET that respect even after winning a World Series, but you play the hand you’ve been dealt, I suppose. Sucks for you. I don’t care.
The White Sox are in first place. That’s nice. I don’t really pay that much attention to the White Sox. I dislike the stadium they play in, I think the management and front office are terse, whiny, offensive and a joke, and from what I can tell as a relatively uninterested observer, the team is playing WAY over its head. But hey, the Cardinals did that in the past few years, and they’ve had great success, so if that’s what happens, frakkin MAZELTOV.
I
DO
NOT
CARE.
Stop trying to make me.

When people on here
talk about the Sux I will add my opinion on them. I can’t figure out why my feelings on the Sux bothers you so much. If I went to a Sux board and voiced my opinions then you would have something to whine about but I don’t. I’m sharing my opinions on a CUBS site with other CUB fans. You are really an insecure person in your Sux fandom.
Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden. Now that's a pair of Aces.

You say don’t give a damn about the Sox and then post hundreds of times (I only searched your use of Sox and your snarky, “Sux” not every time you’ve posted about the Sox) about the Sox.
Seems to me that if you truly didn’t give a damn about the Sox you’d ignore them and or not post so often about them.
Now go back to talking out of both sides of your mouth. That said though, that’s not the orifice you are using.

Cubs evenly matched with Angels?
The Cubs are having a fine season, and you should be feeling good about the last few games over the Brewers, but I hate to break the news to you, the Cubs are not evenly matched with the Angels. Heck, the Cubs merely went .500 against the Sox. And the Cubs finished with a losing record against the AL.
So...
are you saying the Sox are not good and that .500 against them is not a good thing?

About getting a root canal.
Spare us your banter about how Tonight’s wins where wonderful and this that and whatever. Spare us your “Well you know the White Sox are .500 against the Cubs” Blah blah blah
Post your White Sox crap on a White Sox blog with White Sox fans that actually give a damn about the White Sox.
And we’ll worry about the Cubs and OUR team not yours.

You don’t think it’s odd that so many here boldly say that they don’t care about the Sox and don’t pay any attention to them (when the Sox win) but when they lose they jump for joy and post repeatedly about the Sox?
If you don’t give a damn about the Sox (as stated above) then fine. But then when you make 50+ posts about them, it shouldn’t be a surprise when you’re called on that.
what i think is odd is that you're so bent out of shape about it
they’re the other team from the city. I dont’ particularly care for them or their average fan… but I don’t wish anything but good health and fair play on them.

And they just had a segment where they discussed Manny Ramirez’s time to first base, and how his slow time meant he was a clubhouse cancer, and he doesn’t hustle so he doesn’t care about the team, and blah blah blah…
This is crap. Manny has never hustled down to first, but, you know what, that’s sort of ok. Why? Because when you hit the ball as far as he does, you can crawl to first.

Missed the thread tonight.....had to sneak peeks at the score while with my girlfriend....
but WOW, just WOW…..never thought this series would end up making me feel so “giggly”....talk about a perfect time for the bats to wake up and our amazing starting pitchers to put on a great show…...I cannot even decide which starter had the most gusty amazing performance…..probably go with Z or maybe Demps…..
just wait
tomorrow is yet to come.
