Cubs vs. Parra
Manny Parra is 25 years old and made his debut as a major leaguer in July of 2007 on the Brewers. He was drafted in 2001 in the 26th round! There is not much to be said about this guy, although he posted a perfect game in June of 2007 for the minor league affiliate Nashville Sounds. This is probably what pushed him into the major leagues. Below is a tidbit on Parra, like I said, not much to be said as you will see in the numbers below against the members of the Cubs. Derosa is the only player to record a hit on him. Well I believe it is time to welcome him to the 2008 Chicago Cubs and make those numbers jump off the page!!! GO CUBS GO!
- Manny Parra was drafted in 2001, but it seems he has only been in the big leagues since last year, also on Milwaukee.
- In 2007, Parra pitched in 9 games (0-1) for a total of 26.3 innings and posting a 3.76 E.R.A.
- In 2008, so far Parra has posted a 9-3 record in 21 games and 113.7 innings pitched with a 3.72 E.R.A. Parra has pitched in 21 games as a starter and 8 games as a reliever.
1. Soriano: 2 PA, 0-2 with 2 strikeouts (hopefully that changes tonight)
2. Theriot: 2 PA, 0-2
3. Lee: 2 PA, 0-2
4. Ramirez: 2 PA, 0-0 2 walks
5. Fukudome: No at bats
6. Derosa: 2 PA, 1-2 with 2 RBI's
7. Soto: No at bats
8. Edmonds: 1 PA, 0-1
9. Dempster: No at bats
10. Johnson: No at bats
11. Cedeno: No at bats
12. Fontenot: No at bats
13. Blanco: No at bats
14. Ward: No at bats

So we essentially have no experience with Parra...
Let’s build some experience with another big night tonight.

Mid-season rubber game of Milw-Cubs series now tied at 4-4
Cubs have 8 more games left with the Brew Crew…..they are tied at 4-4 but also today or tomorrow could be a rubber game in the mid season in that a win tonight and the Cubs insure they pick up 2 games on the Brewers in the series.
It is a big psychological game, certainly not a knock out in that there are 55 more games to play but coming up to Milwaukee and taking at least 3/4 would wound them at least for a while. A sweep would be about the same but push the Brewers 5 back in the loss column.
Cubs are 6-6 after the ASG break and 13-11 in July, win the next two and they grind out a 15-win month….
And I think Piniella goes with a right-handed strong lineup.

The Cubs basically have no experience
But ‘d definitely say the Cubs have a pitching advantage.

You guys have the pitching advantage
I’m relieved you do, because it didn’t work out so well for us the last two nights.

Too true.
But I’d say you only had the advantage the first night.
I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

I would say Sheets and Big Z are equal but the home field should have put Sheets a little ahead.

I would have thought that too
But then I watched the game last night.
The Crew fans I know all think Parra is better than Demp too.

this should be
even more fun to watch, then. Demp is not having a typical year.
’’If somebody had told me we were going to lose Soriano for eight weeks, lose [Carlos] Zambrano and Kerry Wood for a couple of weeks apiece, and then at the same time lose [Reed] Johnson, and then when we played the American League not have a DH [then-injured Daryle Ward], and be in first place by two games, I’d tell you we were pretty fortunate.’’ Lou Piniella (7/23/08)

I've watched a lot of Dempster and Parra
Dempster is having some sort of great year. I would put him ahead of Parra now, but the future for Parra is very bright. If he gained some more confidence in his stuff, he will be a dominating force. He’s almost got CC like stuff. I’m guessing he’ll buckle under the pressure with the hostile crowd, espn broadcast, and trying to get the first win in the series.

And they were equal til the fifth.
When the Cubs scored their first run I truly thought that might be the deciding factor right there.

So it looks like this will one of those games
where it’ll take the 3rd trip around the lineup to start getting used to him.
Patience at the plate tonight boys, patience. Look at as many pitches as possible.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

Scouting report
Little hard to read, but here are some stats on Parra.
Fastball/curve. Surprising low first pitch fastyball%. Likes his curve. Saves his changeup as an out pitch to righties, and doesnt throw it to lefties. Works primarily down and away, but will throw some high pitches (I assume high heat) mostly.

Manny Parra
is from the Sacramento area. The Sacramento Bee did a story on him last week which mentioned that his Latin American teammates razz him because even though his name is Manny Parra, he doesn’t speak Spanish.
I mean, as long as we’re doing biographical information . . .
