Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Brewers, Thursday 7/31, 1:05 CT
Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 31, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
MILWAUKEE -- It's an absolutely beautiful day in Milwaukee today, and as you can see in the box above, it'll be perfect for baseball this afternoon; light winds, sunny skies, and a temperature near 80. Let's go get 'em! Site notes: this post will be necessarily a little short, because I'm heading to Miller Park early to meet Howard and Jon from our bleacher group for lunch before the game. Also, today's recap will obviously be delayed while I negotiate through traffic to get home this evening; I'm guessing it might be as late as 8 or 9 pm CT before I can get it posted, depending on that traffic and how long the game goes.

||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Again, the above stats are Harden's stats with the Cubs. His complete season line is in the pitcher box above that.
Dave Bush and Seth McClung are in a weird "platoon starter" arrangement; Bush pitches much better at Miller Park and McClung on the road. Bush is 4-2, 2.85 in 66 innings at home this year, but he lost his last start last Saturday at home vs. Houston, where he allowed his first two HR since June 7. He is 1-6, 4.88 lifetime vs. the Cubs, and I'd expect to see Jim Edmonds back in the lineup today; Edmonds is 3-for-8 (all doubles) vs. Bush.
Rich Harden will be making his first career start against Milwaukee; he has faced two of their players before (Mike Cameron, 0-for-2, and Ray Durham, 1-for-12 with 3 strikeouts.
Today's game is on WGN, on FSN Wisconsin and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Today's first pitch thread will be up at 1 pm CT and the three overflow comment threads will post at 2 pm, 3 pm and 3:45 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I hate that photo of Harden
You can obviously tell it’s photoshopped from when he was with the A’s. ESPN: the little things that pisses me off the most about them.

Except for Erin Andrews. It should be EAPN and just show her 24-7

Also, I went to college in Valdosta, GA—the newest Title Town USA. That’s sort of cool. But, I mostly hate ESPN, too.

To say a city in Georgia is "titletown"
is beyond ridiculous. Green Bay should own the rights to that name, Boston has its umpteenth championship in the past decade, the U of Florida has a handful, hell, even U of Kansas is better than some silly town in GEORGIA.

It's just another list
Where ESPN has appointed itself as the authority that can determine the greatest (insert item here) of all time. Last year they had that ridiculous “Who’s Now?” and they’ve had the slightly more entertaining and less ridiculous “Greatest Sports Highlight”.

a funny bit....
When ESPN announced they were having a new vote for titletown, the green bay paper started a similar vote to name ‘The Worldwide Leader in Sports’ (ESPN’s tagline, obviously).

Jim Hendry has put himself in a great position at the deadline.
Already having made his big deal, he can just look for good deals if any other GM is desperate to make a move. Hendry has players teams are looking for (extra middle IFs, extra relievers) and if he makes a move at all, I expect it to be a steal.
Here’s a question along those lines – the Twins are looking for a 2B. Would you trade them Fontenot? If so, what for?
And sicne I posted this in the recap thread not realizing it was about to get replaced by this thread; to help get pardon for the re-post, I’m adding a second question: Will Carroll is saying in the effort to get Manny to the Fish, the Sox and Marlins are looking at a mystery team and the Dodgers to get it done. Could the Cubs get in there, snagging Hermida (the kind of player they have been rumored to be looking at)?
The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scappy as it gets (in T-ball). Any opinion expressed above should in no way be confused with fact, truth, or reality and is hereby qualified in the following ways: 1) The author does not know as much about baseball as Lou Piniella. 2) The author does not know as much about baseball as Jim Hendry. 3) The author does not know as much about baseball as either Dusty or Darren Baker.
by DGU on Jul 31, 2008 11:38 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't see how Hermida fits long-term...
unless you plan on playing Fukudome in CF full-time (which doesn’t seem like a great idea). Hermida, when healthy, has shown a lot of promise. But he’s a RF. Do the Cubs then try to trade Hermida in the offseason?
As for Fontenot, I’d probably be okay with trading him (as I think his value is as high right now as it will ever be). I’d be okay with keeping him too, though, because I don’t know how much he’d get in return anyway. He’s certainly useful down the stretch here.
by SouthernCub on Jul 31, 2008 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought Hermida in CF was doable
if not preferrable.

Bradley's not a bad guy, reporters just don't like him.
He wouldn’t cause a problem in the clubhouse unless he did something ridiculous that caused the other players to be bothered with questions on it…which hell, with the whole 100 year thing, might be good to take questions away from that.

It’s not a matter of whether you can hit his pitches, it’s where.
With that straight-as-an-arrow fastball, we should be fine. That said, I bet Lou sends out some bench players (Ward, Cedeno, Fotenot, etc.) to give a few others a rest.
Prediction- we take the early lead, Brewers start thinking we’re going to sweep, and we do.

Speaking of...
Were we really running at Ibanez?

Yeah
Cubs and Mets, but apparently they didn’t like our offers.

What'd Hendry offer?
A sandwich?
I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling, so why don't we just ignore each other til we go away.

that's appealing
but I’m glad they didn’t bite.
’’If somebody had told me we were going to lose Soriano for eight weeks, lose [Carlos] Zambrano and Kerry Wood for a couple of weeks apiece, and then at the same time lose [Reed] Johnson, and then when we played the American League not have a DH [then-injured Daryle Ward], and be in first place by two games, I’d tell you we were pretty fortunate.’’ Lou Piniella (7/23/08)

It might have just been
“kicking the tires.” I don’t think it would take much to get Ibanez if someone really wanted him. He might be one of those deadline guys who gets moved when teams can’t get their first, second or third option.

Trade Ramirez to the Bulls, who will flip him for Favre

Cubs 4-1 since Soriano returned
Total record: 39-23 when Soriano starts (.629) and 25-21 when he doesn’t or (.543)
one point is the Cubs are 15-13 (.535) on the road with Soriano and 10-17 without him or (.370) ball.

Question: Would anyone else be tempted to rest Aramis today
and use Derosa at 3rd and Fontenot at 2nd? Fontenot’s still on a tear, and Aramis hasn’t been getting his usual days off as of late. Also: day game after night game.

I thought resting one or two regulars would be a smart move
night/day grind, tomorrow’s a day game, followed by two more day games this weekend and two more the following week with then an off day.
but Lou is going for a 2 for 1 in that a win against the team chasing you is worth two in the standings.

Not to denigrate Bo, he’ll do well in the long run. But I think he’ll be ecstatic if that defense holds teams to less than 350 ypg…
