PRE-Pregame Thread: Cubs vs Brewers Game 4 - Let's sweep 'em!
Yet another nice win yesterday-Demp was phenomenal, the offense scored runs, defense was good-a great win. Today, I really have a feeling that the Cubs will win today. Harden will go out and pitch yet another great game, and the Cubs will finally score some runs for him.
Note: Coincedence or no, every time I have posted a PRE-Pregame Thread, the Cubs have won. Granted, the only reason I have done it is for the Brewers series, but should I continue posting these past today? Answer in the poll below....
Hey Chicago whaddya say?
The Cubs are gonna WIN today!

Gah!!! I can't wait for this game.
I’m glad we don’t have to wait until tonight for the game. I want to sweep the Brewers so bad.
Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden. Now that's a pair of Aces.
Dave Bush has been solid
In his last seven starts posting a 2.68 ERA.

we'd be
more than halfway to my 8 games up by mid-august before August even started!

I enjoy seeing these pre-pregame threads
it gives me something to do while I wait at work for the game to start. I’m all for the continuation of the pre-pregame threads. Of course it really depends on if Al has a problem with the extra posts being up everyday.

Well, I dunno.
If people like them—fine. The problem is, it tends to bump the other posts down in the list pretty quickly.
Let me know what you all think.

Al, if there is a problem with me posting these, then please feel free to let me know.
People seem to like them, so unless you have a problem with them, then I was going to continue posting them. If you do have a problem, then I’ll stop.

I like them
on days when the game is late. For something like today—well, I’m always happy to talk Cubs baseball. Not sure it’s needed for day-games when the pre-game thread is up by 11:30 and the game starts at 1:30.

It seems like people are getting better
about posting pointless posts, or posting the same thing as somebody else so hopefully this will help with the posts getting bumped down so quickly.

Theriot: the Cubs' best shortstop since Ernie Banks?

Ok, I'll prove you wrong.
Per baseballanalysts.com: Theriot’s defense costs the cubs 6 runs a season, and he gets to 81% of BIZ, which is below league average. He also is -3 runs on OOZ plays, and is well below league average in that category as well. Among the 105 MLB shortstops baseball analysts studied for 2008 (admittedly all are obviously not starters) Theriot ranked 97. 97 out of 105. Horrible.
On the offensive side, he admittedly gets on base at an impressive clip, which is extremely valuable to this team, so no complaints there. However, his SLG is a paltry .385, which is bad for any major league hitter. Also, his baserunning is simply terrible. He’s stolen 16 bases, and been caught 11 times. Absolutely pathetic, and that doesn’t even include all the mistakes he makes on the bases.
To sum it up, I’ve come around a little on Theriot, and will freely admit that his OBP is highly valuable, and an asset to the Cubs. However, when you take a look at his defense, SLG, and baserunning, I still argue that Theriot is a net negative to this team. And to say Theriot was a better player than Shawon Dunston is just wrong.

Also, I'm not trying to start a flame war or big blow up or anything,
I’m simply answering the question. Obviously the bigger issue of the day is the attempted sweep of the Crew.
by sackings108 on Jul 31, 2008 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions
You answered for me.
Dunston was much better than Theriot. He played better defense, had a rocket for an arm, and hit for more power. Dunston was so good that he came up as rookie and supplanted Larry Bowa, (who we all know was no slouch at short).

On the other hand...
As someone (I wish I could remember who) once so elegantly put it, Dunston was such a hacker that he would sometimes “swing at pickoff throws to first”. Great defensively for sure, but offensively I’d say that he’s a step down from Theriot.

Don't worry.
When you’re comparing Theriot to Dunston, there really isn’t much of an argument.

besides the last 3 weeks.

I enjoy the deadline
but at the same time I’ve had enough talk about Manny and cubs fans thinking we can trade Bob Howry for Huston Street or Cedeno for Jeter(I haven’t actually seen either of these trades I’m simply exaggerating)

Please don't trade Cedeno for Jeter!!
Jeter is quite possibly the worst defensive SS in baseball, and he hasn’t hit this year either. I’d rather have Theriot.
by sackings108 on Jul 31, 2008 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions
Are you serious?
Jeter the worst defensive SS in baseball?
Have you seen Theriot field shortstop?

It's the interwebs.
Sarcasm isn’t as readily apparent. Though I think on BCB the odds are in your favor if you assume a comment is sarcastic.
And, no, that wasn’t sarcastic.

Yeah, I agree with you.
A lot, actually. There are alot of rumors that are surfacing around the internets just for the sake of rumors. It’s exciting to see people actually be traded, though, for me. I still can’t believe Mark Teixeira to the Angels—as if they having Hunter, Guerrero, Kotchman and Kendrick wasn’t enough.

It time take out the bats again...
and give the Brewer’s pitching staff the business. Here’s to a sweep and a 5 game lead!
My mom is in town for the next few days…I’m relegated to watching the games on the DVR after everyone is in bed :(
I’ll try and check in with all of you when I get the chance! Go Cubs!

The only move that really looks likely is Eyre getting sent somewhere for a prospect.

Yes sir, I do.
I expect it to happen this afternoon, right before the deadline. It’ll either be for a pen guy, or a LH bat for the OF. I expect Hendry to come up with something that no one is thinking of.

Random stuff..
According to baseballmusings.com lineup projections, using year to date stats, the Cubs best lineup (5.664 runs per game) is:
Fukudome
Edmonds
DeRosa
Soriano
Ramirez
Soto
Lee
Pitcher
Theriot
I guess the projection agrees with Ned Yost and TLR about where to bat the pitcher.
or, on days Z pitches
Fukudome
Edmonds
DeRosa
Soriano
Ramirez
Zambrano
Lee
Soto
Theriot
@6.055 runs per game
