Manny ends up going to Dodgers
Officially a done deal. No details yet on the other players involved. Ned Coletti is the worst baseball executive in baseball so it will be interesting to see what the Dodgers sent to the Red Sox for what will amount to as a 2 month rental before Manny signs $800 billion deal with the Yankees in order to torment the Red Sox for the duration of his playing career and give the Steinbrenner brothers more World Series trophies.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired slugger Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox, sources tell CBSSports.com senior writer Scott Miller. Also part of the deal, the Red Sox will receive outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh.

You know I was just looking at the Dodgers roster the other day

I am Ned Colletti.

Well, Manny remains one of the best run producers in baseball
But realistically this is a two month rental of his services. The Manny being Manny script won’t be complete until he signs with the Yankees during the winter and torments the Red Sox until he hangs them up.

But now their logjam in the outfield is even worse
...and their OF defense will take a huge hit – Manny shouldn’t be anything but a DH at this point in his career.
I’ll be curious to see what they gave up, that’s what will really make or break the value of this trade.

I wouldn't call Manny on the decline...
He’s still one of the most productive hitters in baseball.
They’ll be rid of Jones and Ramirez next spring. But they gave away Laroche, which is a horrible move. Two months of Manny to take a .500 team to lose in the postseason is not a good move.
If they keep Manny, then maybe it makes sense.

Manny Had It Good in Boston
He doesn’t realize it now, but Boston was a great place for Manny to be. He got to play in a short left field. He was in the American League and could DH, when necessary. Man Ram will rue the day he mouthed off and got himself kicked out of Boston.
He will be in the Hall. He sure still can hit, but I don’t see Manny having the same kind of success with LA as he had with Cleveland and Boston.

wow
I knew he was good as gone, but I did not see LA coming. This would be a good trade for LA, but nobody on the team can stay healthy long enough to get on base. Wow!
As for Boston, it may be addition by subtraction, but I think they may regret it in the playoffs.

As news of this filters out...
...it appears that the Pirates were calling the shots all along as Boston wanted Bay and it was a matter of finding a third partner to take Manny. Considering the return on Bay (reported to include Andy LaRoche as well as three lesser prospects that could still contribute) and the way that the negotiations were handled, this looks like a very good move by Huntington and the relatively new Pirates front office…
...I’m not thrilled about having another competent organization in the Cubs division…but, then again, there’s always Cincinnati.

So the Dodgers now have
Manny, Andruw, Pierre, Ethier and Kemp.
Have fun with that bunch Joe.
by rlpete on Jul 31, 2008 4:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well...
Manny is one of the greatest run producers the game has ever seen and remains very productive. Andruw Jones was a horrificly bad signing by Ned Colletti. Figure they just cut their losses and eat the rest of his contract?? Matt Kemp in my estimation is overrated and a bit of a headcase. Juan Pierre is a swell guy who can’t throw and is signed to an ungodly contract. Andrew Ethier is nothing special to write home about.
by MDBNIU on Jul 31, 2008 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well to Pierre's credit
He’s been having a great season. He’s walking more, stealing a ton of bases again, and generally just doing what he was signed to do.
Jones was a terrible awful signing and looks done. I think you see if you can give him away to someone else (they’ll have no problem trading him post-deadline) or you cut him.
You’re flat out wrong on Kemp and Ethier. I’d argue against it but it wouldn’t matter anyway – any time you make these kinds of assertions about players you never back up your arguments or reply to the people who do so it’s pretty irrelevant.
by Wreckard on Jul 31, 2008 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the initial point was
how the hell are Kemp and Ethier gonna get to play with all of that money invested in Jones, Pierre, and Manny.
by rea5661 on Jul 31, 2008 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Which I completely agree with
It’s silly for Kemp to lose any playing time to anyone but Manny in that outfield at all, but for some reason the Dodgers don’t seem hot on him (even though he’s been their sole shining light offensively this year, other than Furcal).
But of course MDBINU sidetracked by making wild, unsupportable claims about 2 players he’s probably never even seen play. Um, welcome back, I guess.

Thanks for clearing that up. Looking back now, I don’t remember what I thought you were saying, but I should’ve read your post better before assuming you were saying whatever I thought you were. Also, the fact that he referred to him as Andrew Ethier does nothing but further prove your point.

What has Andy LaRoche ever done?
He’s been labeled a great prospect for a long time. Too long in my estimation. I’m not sure why anybody would be greatly enamored with LaRoche. His brother has also been a disappointment to say the least.
by MDBNIU on Jul 31, 2008 4:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You can't produce if you don't get to play
One of the Dodgers biggest problems (and they have many) is that they get these great offensive prospects and then don’t give them a chance to play. LaRoche will only now finally get his chance.

Disagree
Dodgers have had a black hole at 3rd base for a couple seasons. LaRoche had ample opportunity to assert himself the past 2 seasons and wasn’t up to the task. Andy LaRoche is to the Dodgers (and now the Pirates) what Felix Pie has been to the Cubs. \

Laroche only got 58 at bats this year.
He only was never given back-to-back starts since he was called up in June.
He was drawing walks and had quite a bit of bad luck (his BABIP was under .200).
He didn’t get a chance this year at all.

Or are you of the school that minor league numbers are irrelevant to predicting major league performance? Further, to argue that someone’s performance can be predicted by his brother’s performance is the most obvious kind of wrong.

Biggest upset of the season?
1. Rays competing for a playoff spot.
2. St. Louis staying in the race this long.
Or
3. Pittsburgh somehow fleecing Ned Colletti AND Theo Epstein on a trade?
I’ll go with #3—seriously, they got 4 pretty strong prospects for Jason Bay, a guy they would lose anyways????
What was Theo thinking? He gave up Manny, paid his salary, AND TWO PROSPECTS for Jason Bay? Huh?
What a great trade for Pittsburgh….a questionable trade for LA….and a HORRIBLE trade for Boston (who know will have problems making the playoffs with the Rays still tough and the Yankees surging)

Bay could thrive in on a good team
If he bats 3rd, he’ll have great hitter [Ortiz] protecting him, something that never happened in Pittsburgh. It was widely known the the Red Sox were looking to deal Manny, and he’ll basically be a rental player for two months. If they were going to Manny, they needed to sweeten the deal, and they got a good player in return.

It's an enormous haul for the Pirates...
I think it’s safe to say that they played this beautifully… They brought in the Blue Jays, the Rays, etc. What an awesome move.
They get Brandon Moss, who is a top OF prospect, AND Andy LaRoche, plus the Sox 1st round pick from 2005 Craig Hansen. Three years from now, we’re going to not like facing a lineup of McLouth/Andy LaRoche/Adam LaRoche/Moss/McClutchen/Doumit/Alvarez. Awesome trade, Bucs.

It's not #3 in my opinion..
Fleecing Ned Colletti is nothing impressive. The guy is clueless as a GM. And I wouldn’t say the Pirates fleeced the Sox. I think Epstein was in a bad spot. Manny was making himself persona non grata in Boston, and if they’d kept him they’d be admitting that he’s bigger than the organization. Simply put: he HAD to be traded after his last comments.
Epstein’s hands were tied. So they got rid of Manny and got a solid LF to put in the #3 spot in the order in Manny’s place without having to give up any real prospects (neither Moss nor Hansen had a role on that team anyway). Did the Sox get equal talent? Absolutely not. But they had to do what they had to do. Sometimes trades aren’t about talent. Ramirez was showing disrespect to the organization, and as such he had to be moved (and had to be moved to the NL) at any cost.
by SouthernCub on Jul 31, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I don’t see this as a big fleecing of the Red Sox. Manny needed to go. Moss is an ok prospect who projects as a potential decent player but not a star. BA didn’t even put him in the top 10 preseason list for the Red Sox. Hansen has never lived up to the promise.

Overall assessment...
Advantage NEW YORK YANKEES. Manny is removed from the Red Sox. I am of the strong opinion that Theo Epstein is about to realize his comeuppance. Jason Bay is a nice ballplayer but overrated. He’s younger version of Paul Konerko. And what about the detrimental impact on Big Papi now that he has lost his closest friend in the world?
by MDBNIU on Jul 31, 2008 4:43 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's a younger version of Paul Konerko?!?!
Where do you get this assessment from? Please, before I compare the two, explain how these two players are even close to be similar? A LF’er and a 1st basemen. Bay is only two years younger than Konerko as well, that’s not a huge difference. As I said, please explain your remark.

I agree in general
The questions are:
1) what kind of an effect will Manny have on a clubhouse that absolutely exploded last year? Gammons said Francona lost 15 lbs dealing with Manny-stress. If Torre has to deal with Manny stress, could old Dodger stresses come boiling back, especially if they hit a losing streak?
2) what kind of playing time arrangement will follow re: Pierre, Andruw, and Kemp? If Kemp loses most of that playing time, given Manny’s defense compared to Kemp’s, they may not end up with much of an upgrade here at all. Kemp has turned it on the past 2 weeks (since July 13, he’s hitting .400/.464/.660 with 3 HRs and 4 SBs).
3) is Blake DeWitt the 3B of the future? If he is, then, the Dodgers can afford to give up LaRoche. If not, this deal could look bad in 2 years.

I think it'll work out
As I’ve said elsewhere here, Ramirez will be on his best behavior these last months because he wants one more mammoth deal from somewhere. Jones has been benched, and probably the guy who loses time along with him is Ethier. For some reason, Torre’s not all that enamored with him. Right now, they do consider DeWitt the third baseman of the future, but they felt Blake gave them more of a win now chance, for whatever reason. DeWitt came out of nowhere this Spring, but Torre has said more than once for publication that what he likes about Dewitt is that he only needs to be told something once, whereas someone like Ethier he has to tell several times.

.... it’s on LA radio that provided deals can be worked out salarywise, Pierre and Jones could be had on waivers. Likely won’t happen, but the club is willing to let one of both go that way. If Uncle Ned managed to pull THAT off, he’s redeemed himself big time.

Manny was right about the Red Sox trashing players they want to get rid of
Mo Vaughn, Derek Lowe, Nomar, Pedro, etc. Gammons is a great baseball guy, but he is a shill for the Red Sox. Manny is playing for a big contract, he’ll be fine with the Dodgers. He drives in runs, something the Dodgers you mentioned just don’t do. It is a steal for the Dodgers.

Sammy Sosa did it to himself IMO. I mean his last couple of years here weren’t so great. There’s the corked bat, the really low BA and of course him leaving the clubhouse on the final day. Sosa wasn’t so much a fan favorite when he left the Cubs like Manny was for the Red Sox.

You could argue Manny did it to himself, too.
The key point is how the clubs reacted. Your stars will make mistakes and then the clubs can air the dirty laundry or they can cover it up. The risk teams like Boston and the Cubs run if they do the latter is that people ask, “Why can’t Sammy end his career on his terms in Chicago? He was northside baseball for so many years,” etc. etc. Few if any asked why Sammy couldn’t end his career in Chicago. Few if any will ask why Manny couldn’t end his career in Boston. I’m not saying I like this treatment of players. I’m just pointing out a trend in both teams.

Great point
But the difference is the Boston fans still liked Manny. I think towards the end of Sammy’s tenure the fans just didn’t care for him anymore. Had a low average, the team turned out to dissapoint everyone, I don’t think his HR production was as high…he disappointed the fans.
Manny has been known for being lazy and doing this sort of thing in the past yet the fans still seem to love him. I lived in Boston for 4 years…they love him there and are shocked he was actually traded this time. I’m sure the Red Sox fans will soon really like Jason Bay too. He seems like a cool fit there.

For Sammy that is.
Yeah—Manny is an ultraversion of when Sheffield lolly gagged it in Milwaukee because he wanted out.
Gammons who is a die hard Red Sox guy got a little emotional about it because he knew it wasnt about baseball but about money. Its a shame because if baseball had his full focus he could be even better than he is.

Yep
This is an incredibly balsy move by Theo Epstein and Terry Francona. I don’t know how on earth you get rid of one of the greatest all-time run producers who played HUGE role in your franchise winning 2 World Series Championships and remains hugely productive.
To me this is an assinine move by the Red Sox. Believe me the happiest people on the planet right now are the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays. Jason Bay has ridiculously huge shoes to fill and is being thrust from baseball obsurity to center stage. Bay’s a nice albeit overrated ballplayer. But asking him to fill Manny’s shoes starting in August for a mega high profile team that is battling once again for the post-season? And what is going severely under reported is the impact on David Ortiz, who is like a blood brother to Manny.
Today might mark the comeuppance of the Boston Red Sox and their arrogant general manager and manager.

Balsy? Is that a condensed adjective of balsamic?

I respecfully disagree
Ramirez will be in full blown salary drive these last two months. He’s waived the last two options years at $20M each so he can make another deal at the end of the season. Even he knows loafing through the end of this year won’t get him a deal that tops what he waived.

Your analysis is one sided
Jason Bay has equalled Manny this year, and now he will play in a stacked lineup in a hitters park in a pennant race. His number should increase appreciably. Look for .300/.380/.570 from him, with solid D, and another 6SB/0CS.

Great Deal By The Ddodgers
Seriously. They gave up a middling third base prospect and a single A pitcher. In return, they get two months of Manny Ramirez in salary drive, and the Red Sox are paying his salary for the rest of the year to boot.
Torre has already benched Jones, so they might have a lef to right outfield of Ramirez, Pierre and Kemp, or Ramirez, Kemp and Ethier. Loney, Kent, Garciaparra and Casey Blake with Russell Martin catching. Not exactly the most athletic of infields, but in the N.L. West, good enough, especially when Arizona did nothing.

OK
Both in my view are non-athletically “gifted” rather one dimensional run producers. I liked Paul Konerko a good deal. I also like Jason Bay. But there is no way a Jason Bay in his prime (which is right now) is anywhere remotely as feared or as good as Manny Ramirez even at this relative advanced stage of his career. It is my opinion that Boston made a ridiculously stupid move today. All they had to do was kiss and make up with Manny, then watch him yet again help propel them to the playoffs before saying goodbye for good in the winter. Red Sox couldn’t put up with the antics of one of the all time greatest run producers for two more months? We could use antics like that in a Cub uniform. So could any playoff chasing team.
by MDBNIU on Jul 31, 2008 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that really addressed the Bay = Konerko question
But I would say they are both pretty athletically gifted. But they are very different players in general. Konerko K’s around 90 times a year, while Bay will K almost 150 times a year. Bay has speed, as he has stolen 21 bases in a single year, while Konerko has only stolen six in his entire career. As stated above, one’s a left fielder and one’s a first baseman, however, both are pretty good defensively at their positions. Bay does have a higher career OBP, Slug., and Avg. than Konerko, and that’s all in the middle of a horrible pirates lineup.
Just saying, they are very different players. Bay could be a very dangerous hitter in a good lineup, as Konerko has been in the middle of the Sox lineup (besides this year).

On Bay
I agree. He is a great player hidden a mediocre linuep. I fear his production in a lineup where he can almost be forgetten, in sense. He is a tough player with underrated power and hopefully the Cubs will see him again this year and…..well if the Cubs see him again this year I would be fearful and afraid of him and the rest of his lineup.
Then again, I hope the Cubs get that chance. Riding high on this weekend—-I welcome it.

Since you singled me out by name, I'll respond.
Let’s say I do show up on Saturday. And let’s say we do step out behind the ballpark and start throwing punches. And let’s say I’m the one who ends up on the asphalt bleeding and beaten. What will you have proven about your so-called baseball acumen? About your poor rhetorical skills? About your incessant need to repeat every half-baked opinion that comes out of your keyboard? Absolutely nothing.
You flatter yourself by assuming that my (or anyone else’s) “singular mission” is to call you “a lying sack of shit” (something I’ve never, ever done, by the way). If you took the time to read through all of my posts, you’d find that I have much more on my mind. I will say, however, that, as long as you post here, I will take every opportunity to poke holes – and poke fun – at most of what you say.
Why? Because I honestly disagree with most of what you say and how you say it. And, moreover, I don’t like you. Or, should I say, I don’t like the person you present yourself as on this blog. Like I wrote in my reply to your “I’m leaving BCB” post a few days ago, I don’t know you as a person, and I certainly wish no harm come to you in real life.
But you’re a pariah here, and I honestly enjoy this blog more when your avatar and bloated, ill-informed opinions aren’t cluttering up every other thread. (And if you read this post carefully, you’ll find at no point have I insulted you, just your ideas and self-presentation.)
Have fun at the game on Saturday. Or, should I say, have fun watching the crowd around you. Maybe I’ll be there. Maybe I won’t.
