SWEET SWEEP!: Brewers series recap

WOW!  wasn't this fun?!  Going into Milwaukee, our cubbies had a precarious 1 game lead over the surging brew crew.  We had been swinging quiet bats, and were facing the oh-so-hyped Co-Aces CC and Sheets.  Well, we knocked 'em around and got 4 GREAT great pitching performances.  Here are some enjoyable crooked numbers and highlights:

Lilly/Z/Demp/Rich:  4-0, 31 IP, 5 ER, 34K, 4BB

CC/Sheets/Parra/Bush:  0-3, 24.2 IP, 20 ER, 15K, 8BB

Outscored Brewers 31-11

Leave town with a 5 GAME LEAD over the suds, who are now 1/2 game behind the cards (pending game tonight) in 3rd place!

Oh, and notorious cub killer Jason Bay wont be at wrigley tomorrow!  What a wonderful week to be a Cubs fan!  Feel free to come up with more crooked numbers from this series, statheads, and share them with us.  GO CUBS!!!

Difference Since Sunday

The Cubs and Brewers were tied for first on Sunday morning. Now, on Thursday afternoon, the Cubs are a full 5 games ahead of the Brewers. This was the best series I can ever remember the Cubs playing. This was better than the Cubs sweeping the Expos in a 3-game set at Wrigley in August 1989 to take first place

Just goes to show...

...how quickly the tide can turn. About 2 weeks ago, the Brewers were 7 games out, and within 10 games they were tied with the Cubs. Now, the reverse has happened. This is why you can’t rest on your laurels. This is the time for the Cubs to keep the foot on the peddle and create distance between the Cards and Brewers.

Anyone find it ironic

The last 2 months every Cubs win has seemed to be a nail biter. Ironically 3 of the 4 games this series were pretty relaxed by the 7th inning.

Agreed - best series for the Cubs in a long, long time.

Another comparison that comes to mind besides that Expos series was taking 4 of 5 from the Cards at Wrigley in September ‘03. But those series both pale in comparison to the gigantic can of whoop-ass the Cubs just opened (on the road, no less).

I listened to it on the radio at work

I just recently got finished watching most of it (50-60%) on TV. It was great. When i watch on DVR I usually zoom through the offense and watch the hits and scoring plays and I usually watch all of the D, especially when it is a good pitching performance.

The difference this week and the previous six was simply the effect Soriano had

He leads the Cubs offense, everything pivots off his effect and presence. Cubs starters continued in their good pitching and the Cubs bullpen masked Wood injury well.

Looking forward Cubs now need to rest DLee, 1 game each in the next two series before Thursday’s break….give him three days and possibly 2 in a row.

Continue to platoon Soto and Blanco once a series and I think we have learned that Fukudome is a 5 day player, not six.

Nurse Edmonds along (he has the most HR’s since June 1st) and work in Fonte and Johnson.

We learned this club is mentally and physically better than the Brewers and Cardinals.

Small note....

....Lilly did not get the win in Game 1—it was Gaudin. So the starters are 3-0 (I will trust the rest of your numbers, though).

Still, Lilly pitched a HELL of a game—and I’m beaming as a Cubs fan right now….

I know I'm not alone in this

I didn’t have the best feeling going into this series. We were 1 game up and when The Brewers look good, they look unstoppable. We had been lagging and on the road lagging even more. To be honest if we split the series I would have been content.

However I learned a lot from this series. One, I never liked Soriano. Just didn’t. I finally see what he means to this team. And two, The pitchers finally got what they deserved with solid pitching. Harden earned a win as did Z and Dempster. The bullpen was effective and most rested.

We don’t have an easy schedule ahead but we just swept the #2 team in the National League…I have high hopes!

by ak123 on Jul 31, 2008 4:44 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It’s good to see us beat two legitimate aces. We’ve struggled to do this all year. This gives us more hope to go deep into the playoffs.

Does anyone else see Soriano picking his nose?

by Holy Cattle on Jul 31, 2008 4:48 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it feels good for a number of reasons

1) They haven’t played well on the road and they did that this week.
2) They haven’t played well against the Brewers this year and they did that this week.

While September will be a difficult month, August has the potential to be like April and May. Hopefully they can pad this lead and take the pressure off going into september.

What is interesting is the statistics spread and balance

Cubs have two players with 18 HR’s (Soriano & Ramirez), two with 17 HR’s (Lee & Soto), one with 12 (Edmonds) and the other with 11(DeRosa) another pair with 8 (Fukudome & Fontenot). The only punch & judy hitters are Johnson (5), and Theriot (1). This means most of the time six or seven hitters can take the ball out of the yard.

I could see the Cubs having two 30 HR hitters, and three with 20 HR’s while DeRosa & Fukudome possibly over 15 when the season is over.

Starting pitching we have three with 10 wins, (Dempster & Zambrano 12) and Lilly with 10 while Harden and Marquis each have 6 wins. We could have one or two 20 game winners, another with 15 or more and possibly the two other starters with 10 wins.

This is balance. This is why the Cubs have the biggest run differential in the NL and growing.

I look for a big August, possibly 19 or 20 wins, bringing them to 84-85 wins by Sept 1.

It is funny how a series changes everything

Where are the posters who said the season was over after the Marlins series? Wasn’t there someone who thought the Cubs would finish 10 games below .500.

Have they all disappeared or are they peaking out over their ledge wondering if it is safe again to come out?

Definitely the highlight of the season (so far)

i admit that I was close to the ledge last weekend and dreading this series-it’s awesome to see the Cubs step up and make a statement-esp. after they looked so bad after the break.
And, as has already been mentioned, despite his streakiness-this is a much better team when Soriano is on the field. When he’s on it takes a lot of pressure off of the rest of the order, etc.
and one other thing; I couldn’t resist looking at the Brew Crew game thread towards the end of today’s game and it was pretty cool to see how many of them were talking about what a superior team the Cubs were top to bottom. I’ve waited most of my life to see the Cubs get that kind of respect.

2 Sweeeet!

This has been a fun series! I believe it’s showed a lot of people a few things also…

1. As long as the team doesn’t go into panic mode, this team has a very dangerous lineup. I know we’ve stated this before, but its one thing to be dangerous during the regular, less pressure, games of the season. And then be dangerous in the big games! This team CAN be dangerous in the big games if it just takes its time, paces itself, and doesn’t go nuts swinging for the long ball. If this team remembers to take its time, it will be awesome in the playoffs. When we get there, I believe our only weakness will be maybe bullpen. When we get there though, I am sure Marmol and Wood will be carrying the load of playoff bull pen work.

2. Fonzie is awesome. To me, he can… and will carry this team all by himself. I looked forward to him returning after his injury, because I felt with Lee, Aram, and Fukudome slumping to some degree, we needed him. I just felt he was awesome in this series. I couldn’t believe it when I was hearing so many Cub fans ripping on him at the beginning of the year. I won’t be surprised if he turns into our 2nd half MVP. He’s rested and ready to go….

Man… this was just awesome. I got to watch all of the games, and I am so thrilled. In my opinion, this is the best Cub team in a long… long time. If only DLee could stop hitting so many balls on the ground!

Go Cubs Go!

For Fielder

I was surprised that Ned Yost just sat there and saw this happen. If I were him I would have gone out there and get ejected to perhaps put the heat off the players and their actions. I have a strong feeling Lou would not allow his player to act that way in the dugout.

I do

First three pitches were all inside, the first and third Jedmonds had to get out of the way. Then the fourth goes behind his back?

Then, 15 minutes later after he’s ejected and the next pitcher takes about 25 warm up pitches, the first pitch to Geovany Soto is a fastball right as his face?

That’s either Yost, or his players doing it on their own but for Yost. Edmonds’ comments this morning are interesting.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

Holy crud

I know that this is me starting a convo on immature fans…

But is hurts when one of them has power on a site that SBNation runs.

Over at BrewCrewBall, I responded to a statement about not all fans being bad by agreeing and saying that not all Cubs fans are bad. I added that even though a Brewers fans cheered D-Lee going down after a foul ball catching him on the foot on Monday’s game.

One of their mod’s yelled at me, told me noone cared what I had to say.

I responded by saying it’s hard for me to take him seriously when he responds to me.

Then, I get an official warning saying I’ve been trolling and I have to stop and I’ve been officially warned.

Which is odd, because he did his best to “instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real Mature!” (An exact quote from the mod’s signature about OUR site.)

Man, I love Al. We still have DrCrawdad posting here, and he is a fullblown White Sox fan. It’s because he doesn’t attack us and tries to provide unbiased opinions. Al lets him stay… despite the fact that he roots for another team.

Great site runners are awesome.

There are good Brewer fans

and then there are the moderators over at Brew Crew Ball.

Al has tried to extend olive branches to them several times, and they’ve spat it back in our faces. They have no interest in any sort of civil relationship—and then they say that it’s all our fault for “trolling.”

In their eyes, no Brewer fan has ever done anything wrong since 1970 and all Cub fans will burn in the fires of hell for being totally worthless human beings. It’s like they have some sort of complex. (Oh, and by the way, someone from over there will read this post and use it as further evidence to how completely worthless Cub fans are. Just to let those other BCBers, know, I was born and raised in Wisconsin—third generation. So when you attack me for my Cub fan “hypocrisy,” don’t you dare call me a FIB.)

People just shouldn’t go over there. The moderators don’t want you there (despite their public statements otherwise) and not having a civil relationship with them is really no loss to us. So leave them alone.

There are Brewer fans that are cool and there are other Brewer sites. And cool Brewer fans will come over here. Just leave them be.
