Just when you thought it couldn't get worse

It didn't. We sweep our closest challenger at their place. And we showed 3 legitimate #1 starters. All this despite our closer still being on the DL.  Our odds of making the playoffs are now over 90%.

So what needs to be fixed to make us better. Howry? Gaudin has a 1.54 ERA and 13K/1BB since coming to the Cubs. Eyre? He's been replaced by Cotts with a 2.57 ERA which is aboutr 2 runs per game better than Eyre's lifetime number. We seem to have some guy from Notre Dame who should be a welcome addition the rest of the years. Unfortunately Ward seems to be having a bad year and perhaps Hoffpaiur will get a call prior to 9/1.

Add to above that the Cubs are probably better suited to playing in the cold October weather with our pitchers. So, what does everyone think needs improvement for our journey to find the Holy Grail?

Your post title scared me!!

Nicely done and your right!! Braves beating the Cards in the 9th, makes a nice day.

Ha

you got me, i thought someone was gonna find fault with the series…other than Howry of course

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

LOL

It scared me too.

Right now, I don’t see anything needed except for a little tweaking of bullpen roles once Wood comes back. Though Ward hasn’t been hitting, it hasn’t mattered. If in the next 30 days it does, then yes, maybe someone will be acquired or Hoffpauir recalled.

In the meantime, keep it going against the Pirates.

I feel

good. It’s an odd feeling. Comfortable. Confident. We have both hitters and pitchers. While there are weak spots, we just saw the road problems from earlier in the year get swept under the carpet. This is a team that has some veteran leadership, some young guys, and all of them seem to be playing loose. The near future schedule looks to be light, so we should be in good shape heading into September. We never know what’s going to actually happen, but the pieces are in place.
Plus, neither the Brewers or Cards should feel good right now after watching the last 4 days.
I’m not sure how to take this. But right now, it feels good.

Oh, and

I need to issue a formal apology to Jim Edmonds, when we traded for him, I was afraid we were getting a broken down, poorly hitting, shell of his former self. I thought it was a bad idea. I was wrong. Having a mentally tough, playoff experienced guy like him on the team is good. I don’t know how his knee is going to hold up, but watching him lay out for that diving catch earlier was awesome.

nitpicking, but

we didn’t trade for him, we picked him up when the padres cut him loose. we’re only paying him the minimum salary, too.

ummm

No idea what the FBO is, sorry.
You’re right, my mistake about not trading for him. I still questioned picking him up, my bad.
And yes, it’s Mr. Yuck.

I gotta ask!

For those of you who made the trip up, what percentage of the crowd was cubs fans?!? It sounded great both on TV and the radio, and I heard that the stadium broke out in go cubs go. Plus the brewers fans are upset by it and their manager said something along the lines of “we let their fans come in here and have a four day party!” I love it! Anyone care to elaborate on how it all went down?!?

by fanofthegame on Jul 31, 2008 9:55 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It was building already by 10am

There were hundreds already tailgating when we got there just before 10. Lots of Cubs fans in the lot and the go-cubs-go song blaring in a few places. We set up our canopies and grills, popped open growlers & bottles and sat back to enjoy the late morning.

Getting in there, it seemed like it was about 50/50. It was a late-arriving crowd consdidering it being a day game. Less than 40,000 through the 1st inning. There were Cubs cheers coming from every area. The chants came and went through out the game, with all HR’s receiving loud ovations. Domer’s shot was a classic HR shot for him; well balanced swing and that little bat flip as he’s leaving the box. Edmonds first shot I swear had no hook to it even though it landed only 40’ fair. Soriano’s shot, we knew it was gone with the crack and Edmonds granny, I wasn’t sure it’d leave but the carry there today was good; maybe the day’s heat helped out, not much wind.

This is the 2nd loudest I heard a Cubs game up there. The loudest was in Sept, 2003 when Miller Park had it’s highest attendance ever, over 46k. But then it could have been a 2:1 ratio of Cubs fans to Brewers fans. More recently, with their team getting better and the “take back Miller Park” promo, it’s closer to 50/50, perhaps maybe even favoring the Brewers fans a few percentage points.

When Fontenot dropped that bloop double that plated 2 more runs, the “sweep” chants started. By then, I’d say about 5,000 Brewers fans had already left.

The one constant I heard from their fans is how sick and tired they were hearing “Go Cubs Go”. They were not nasty about, just tired of it. Personally I like the ‘69 song and blared the full rendition on my PDA several times during the game and even walking over the ‘bridge’ back to the lot to post-game tailgate.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

I feel bad for the Brewers

I’d be super pissed if another fanbase took over my stadium/parking lot like that, blasting Go Cubs Go all over the place. Then I remember that the only way to solve that is to actually have Brewers fans buy tickets…it still must be tough given how much money scalped tickets were probably going for to Chicago fans. How tough was it for you game-goers to get tickets?

Cardinal fans frequently fill 40% of Wrigley when St. Louis is here.

I don’t see Cub fans reacting the way Brewer fans do in Milwaukee.

we got ours thru brewers.com when they went on sale end of Feb.

What is still needed?

Healthy players. The Cubs still need more good luck with respect to healthy players, we have older guys and higher injury risks in some areas.

This is a good team but I’d prefer an everyday star type player in CF, like Edmonds before he showed his age. We aren’t getting that guy. Injuries and age could be pretty key for the Cubs down the stretch. If we haven’t done it already then we need to drop down to 12 pitchers for August, the starters are coming together and we could use an extra everyday player.

If Harden stays healthy he’s damn good, not just okay, but damn near unhittable. You go into a three game series looking at Z, Dempster and Harden and this team is going to be position to kick some butt the rest of the way. Lilly and Marquis at 4 & 5, come on, that’s a damn good match up for the Cubs.

Hopefully Reed Johnson and Jimbo will remain healthy and fresh and can have productive ABs for the stretch. This team is good enough to get to the WS but they need guys to stay and get healthy.

The fact that Ted Lilly is now our 4

Means that there is a pretty darn good starting rotation up on the North Side.

If 1-4 can continue to pitch at the level they did this week in Milwaukee, I don’t see how this team can falter, even with the occasional “Marquis meltdown”.

by SuperContext on Aug 1, 2008 9:25 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And today wasn't a Marquis meltdown.

He pitched fine. The team didn’t hit today.

Yes, I like Marquis...

..., he’s a MLB starter and totally acceptable as your #5. When he’s ahead on the count and throwing GBs he can throw some gems and will outpitch nearly all other No. 5s (not that he always faces the no. 5 counterpart) but if he’s our weakest starter then we have solid rotation.

I am really excited about harden. IAlthough they are being cautious with his PC and IP, his stuff is just dominant. If this guy stays healthy then it’s like getting the old Mark prior back in terms of stud pitcher in the rotation. We have all been through the “if” so and so can stay healthy routine with Prior and Wood, and we wasted an entire season on that strategy, so I hate to hang my hat on a often injured SP again but all we need is 3 healthy months from Harden…I like our chances.
