Brewers look to be front-runner for Sabathia

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Milwaukee Brewers appear to be very serious in the C.C. Sabathia trade talks. According to Rosenthal, Milwaukee is offering Class AA left fielder Matt LaPorta. In addition, Class AA shortstop Alcides Escobar may also be included in Milwaukee's offer. If this is true, it clearly looks like the Brewers are in the drivers seat  for the acquistion of Sabathia.

The Cubs are only mentioned in passing; saying that the Cubs want Sabathia, but their farm is not as stocked as Milwaukee's. The Indians clearly need hitting; that much is known; but what can the Cubs offer that the Brewers can't offer more of? Beats me.

Rosenthal's article is here.

That'd do it

We can’t match LaPorta. Vitters has a higher upside, but he’s a lot farther away and would be riskier for Cleveland. They need to get someone who is sure to contribute at the major league level.

I know less about Escobar, other than he’s a real tools monster and seems to be finally putting it together this season.

I don’t think anyone would really want to try to beat that.

Yeah.

Hope the Brewers enjoy three months of Sabathia.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They would, according to Buster Olney in BB Tomight.

Because if Sabathia becomes a free agent at the end of the season, the Brewers would have 5 picks in the draft’s 1st round. That’s not a bad way to get some more prospects and replenish the farm.

thats what I thought

the post above was trying to make it sound like you would get 5 picks for losing CC

by LT on Jul 4, 2008 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're counting

on getting two more picks for losing Ben Sheets, who they really aren’t trying to re-sign. So it’s five—two for Sabathia, two for Sheets and their own.

They have other free agents at the end of the season as well – Jason Kendall for starters.

Should make the division race even more interesting. Hopefully the Brewers have as much luck as the Expos did with Langston in 89.

don't the brewers have a greater need in the pen

than in the rotation? their rotation is GREAT, but their bullpen is where i see the most holes…

That's what I thought.

As good as Sabathia is, what would be accomplished by getting him if the Brewers bullpen cannot hold a lead? Just look at what happened to them Thursday in the 9th inning.

Turnbow's Been Terrible

Derrick Turnbow was a good MLB reliever once upon at time. Now, Turnbow’s getting pounded at AAA Nashville. Turnbow was supposed to be a big part of the Brewers bullpen this year.

Buster Olney said the Indians are scouting the Brewers' prospects.

He said Thursday night on Baseball Tonight that this means the Brewers are front-runners in a future trade for Sabathia.

by Fraggin Judge on Jul 4, 2008 1:59 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

How does that follow?

I’m guessing the Indians are scouting ALL the possible trade partners’ prospects.

I Transcribed the report from TiVo and Buster said:

Buster Olney:

“The Milwaukee Brewers have dispersed scouts of all levels to evaluate Cleveland’s farm system and potential trade offers. When I talked to a highly placed official with the New York Yankees about this he commented, “I understand the desire to win now. We’re the Yankees, everything we do is important and everyone wants to see us succeed. We’ve got the greatest fans in the world and for us to not at least be mentioned in the Sabathia sweepstakes shows how far we’ve fallen in the baseball world.’

And while the Yankees not being part of the early running might be a shock, consider also that the Boston Red Sox do not appear interested either, despite trailing the AL East by a game and half. Boston vice-president Theo Epstein was more direct – “If we wanted Sabathia we’d get him. I mean, we just haven’t made up our minds, yet. Those deals with Beelzebub are pretty binding, so when the time is right, I’m sure we’d vault to the top of the ladder.”

Also mentioned as potential suitors for Sabathia’s service, other teams not in New York or Boston.

Here's what I transcribed from my DVR, from BB Tonight's Thursday's 11:00 PM Central ed.:

Buster Olney said:

Well, this could be the bad news for the Cubs. In talking to executives who are involved in the negotiations for C.C. Sabathia, they report that the Indians have sent multiple scouts to the AA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, the one team that seems to be involved in this that’s loaded with position prospects.
The indians have pitching coming up but they need some more offensive type guys. The Brewers have that in AA. Some of the other teams that could be involved may not be motivated to go after him, like the Rays and the Red Sox, or, you know, they may not have the prospects, like the Cubs.
Here’s the big question for the Brewers: If they trade for Sabathia, in all certainty he’s going to walk away as a free agent. Ben Sheets is going to be a free agent. That’s the downside.
The upside is if they make the trade, at the end of the year they get 5 draft picks in probably the first 35 next year because of the compensation when free agents walk away. So let’s see how steep the Brewers make their offer to the indians.

In short, both the Indians and the Brewers are scouting each other. (See Gibbon Jockey’s post above.)

Well, he's gonna have to pitch

9 innings every start, because the bullpen cannot be trusted to lock games down. Sure, they aren’t going to give up 6 in the 9th every night, but they have some real issues and if this implosion happens a few more times, not one of their late men will have any confidence at all going into a playoff push. This deal may turn into no big deal, all things considered, if the Cubs don’t sign C.C.

Even a highly regarded one, seems like too little. I realize another AA might get thrown in, but still…we’ve got guys who have actually tasted the big leagues.

This is, like, Ptolemeic prospect evaluation.

There is a deep, abiding and fundamental mistake in your entire outlook on prospects. You realize that they might “throw in” a five-tool shortstop with high upside, along with the sort of power-hitting corner guy that the Indians so desperately need? Really?

The Brewers bullpen is terrible

Jeez, it blows. Torres is their best RP and he is a mediocre closer at best. Maybe if they trade more solid prospects for two reliable setupman, but nobody now these days will give up RP that easily. Their SP will be solid, but their pen will still be their downfall. Sure, you can argue the Cubs pen is mediocre, but not as bad as the Brew Crew pen.

And no, they won’t be in the driver seat in the NL Central. They are still 4.5 games behind the games and as of right now the Cubs are in control of winning their division.

by Geo4MVP on Jul 4, 2008 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, the Cubs will get a SP

They will go after a SP like Burnett or possibly Bedard (if he is out there in a reasonable price), but don’t know who they would offer. And forget Harden; knowing Beane’s trading history you should know he demands the best of the best in return for any of his players. Look at the Mulder trade, Swisher trade, and Dan Haren trade.

Burnett, with his opt out clause, is in the same FA boat after the season as Sabathia, although much more signable. Bedard is, well, Bedard…living off a past reputation that he no longer deserves.

for Milwaukee to blow away Cleveland and get Sabathia rather than wait until July 31 when it might be too late. Even if they have to overpay—if they wait until the end of the month the four or five starts that Sabathia doesn’t make might cost the Brewers the playoffs.

uh oh

I’ve yet to be really worried about the cards chances this year. what I am concerned about is the brewers. they have a potent offense that is dangerous. maybe one of the best lineups in all of baseball IMO. but they have no bullpen including closer and need at least 2 sp. if they want cc and he is really gonna be traded—he’s theres.

now where it gets tricky is what if rauch is indeed available from the nats? if doug melvin decides to throw the chips in and go for broke-were in for one helluva dogfight. if i’m melvin and I can get cc and I know i’m not gonna have sheets after this year-i’m going for it.

this goes w/o saying but we need every single W. I gotta believe this race is going down to the wire.it’s time for our cubbies to man up. we need big z to be the man starting tonight.

Brewers

Look at the lineup pieces….two superstars in the making in Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun….one of the finest ballplayers nobody talks about in Corey Hart….a great defensive shortstop in JJ Hardy….and an immensely talented albeit enigmatic young hitter in Rickie Weeks (who really needs to move to the outfield to unlock his potential ala BJ Upton in Tampa Bay). Add to that Ben Sheets, Yovani Gallardo, Manny Parra…. And a still very well stocked farm system. Pretty damn good.

The idea is to be the wild card team and then use the starting pitching rotation of Sabathia, Sheets and Parra to pitch their way through the playoffs.

what about their bullpen?

their pen is pathetic! Their best RP is Torres and after that there is nobody. You need a strong pen in order to even make the postseason. If they even want to win the games in September, be prepared to let both Sheets and Sabathia go 8+ innings. Otherwise, they will choke.

melvin

if melvin goes out and gets cc, which i see happening, i think he turns around and gets a closer like rauch and a couple other relievers to help that pen. one things for sure in all of this-melvin damn sure holds the trade chips able to get all of this done. if i’m melvin i know a couple things—mgmnt isnt going to give me huge dollars to resign a #1 starter like cc or sheets at the end of the season. let me rephrase that—they havent yet. here are the facts: i got sheets until the end of the year and a great offense. my farm system is loaded to the core, my bullpen sux and i need at least one more starter. cc is available and rauch seems to be. IF he can add a great #1 starter and great closer.

he sets up a dominant 123 punch and ensures, if he can get to the 9th—he wins. now leaves a couple descent middle relievers to go and get which are very attainable.

i’m not saying there gonna beat us but what I am saying is that were in for a helluva dogfight if they do in fact pull the trigger on a couple blockbusters in which they have the pieces to do easily.
