BTW, why didn't they change their name when they moved?

I’m sorry, but the last thing that comes to my mind when I think about Utah is jazz ;)

They didn't change the name

because they had a whole ton of merchandise with “Jazz” on it that they didn’t want to throw away.

Seriously.

The business of the NBA was a lot different back then than it is now.

Except no one anticipated Zito's slide

You could see Andruw’s coming a mile away. He already sucked when they shelled out that money.

The Zito deal was bad, but there were a lot of teams that were in the running to look like fools on that one.

by cocknfire on Jul 4, 2008 9:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think everyone anticipated Zito's slide.

People just underestimated how quickly it was coming. It was pretty obvious that he wasn’t the same pitcher he was a few years ago.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 9:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Remember,

Andruw is, at the very least, a great defensive CF, unlike Pierre. Admittedly, defense-only guys aren’t worth $18M, but it’s only 2 years. Even if Zito were decent, 8 years is a long time for a SP.

by Josh77 on Jul 4, 2008 9:14 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, but he's got range.

You can’t make a throw on a ball you can’t even get to. You can hide an arm like his out in center or left.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 9:15 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Depends on the range and the arm...

...as well as the position. But generally speaking, true talent level for a throwing arm for an outfielder is +/- 5 runs from the average. True talent level for fielding (catching the ball, basically) is +/- 15 runs. So range, especially in CF, is more important. In RF, there’s a certain bare minimum arm strength you have to posses.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 9:18 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Twins had a bounty of CFers...

...with Jones and Hunter. They went ahead and basically wrecked Jones’ career by moving him to a corner. He was a really good CFer, defensively and offensively.

And, at some point, you’ve got to hit as an outfielder, and every team in the majors know that if you throw it down and away, Jones will keep hacking

He's having an off season at AAA.

His trade value is probably down. Would I want him? Sure.

He's blocked by Escobar. They also have Hernandez behind him.

I wonder what Frank Wren thinks his value is right now.

Sending Francouer down...

...tells me the Braves are close to throwing in the towel. They’ll probably be sellers, not buyers.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 9:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

60% of their projected rotation is on the DL, 20% was...

There injury list has made the Cubs’ look trivial.

They haven’t been able to sit Francoeur (even though he’s been hurt all year), and give him a chance to work in the cage, because their OF has been so banged up. Now, the problem is so bad they had to send him down. Kotsay still isn’t healthy.

Bobby Cox is a fighter, but even he knows that being swept at home by the Phils is pretty much it—especially since the WC will probably come from the Central.

I don't know

I used to cover a couple Braves game every now and then when our beat reporter needed a day off

It was astonishing to see how many silver linings Cox can find

Guy gives up seven runs—“I thought he was gonna throw a no-hitter with that stuff. They just got ahold of a few of em.”

by cocknfire on Jul 4, 2008 9:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Even if Cox refuses to give up...

...Wren and Schuerholtz aren’t going to trade away young players for rentals to indulge him. They know this isn’t their year.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 9:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And Cox is a former GM.

He knows not to do something stupid in their current position.

They can't re-sign him

Boras is his agent and the Braves don’t have the money

Could keep him for the draft picks, I guess…

by cocknfire on Jul 4, 2008 9:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just guessin'...

No. I think they still feel they have a shot to sign him. If they trade him, he won’t come back.

Even though he’s a Boras guy, his wife is from Atlanta and he went to Ga. Tech. If the Braves can come close to the Yankees’ offer, he might stay.

He's been promoted

to AA and has gotten two starts. He’s giving up home runs but the rest of his peripherals are good. The ERA is bad but the K:BB ratio is great.

But it’s also a really small sample size; both for good and bad.

Maestri

is someone I’m really proud of as he was an unknown guy I saw here in Boise two years ago and said that guy might be something. To see him actually become a prospect gives me great pride. Now I’m just worried we’re going to trade him. :-)

Would you call him a "B level" prospect?

Or is it too early to say?

I wonder if the Cubs will let him play in the WBC. He might have DeRo as a teammate if they do.
