Post-Game Notes

• Fantastic return to form by Big Z. Efficient and in control of his emotions. Really buckled down with runners on base and got out of things unscathed – with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out in the 6th, he retires Glaus on an infield pop-up and gets Duncan on a roller to short.

• Another dropped throw by Theriot in the 3rd. Sadly this isn’t the first time Ryan’s done this. Sure hope a veteran SS with a trusty glove who can be used as a late-inning defensive replacement is part of Hendry’s shopping list.

• Good to see HRs as part of the Cub arsenal tonight (Dome, Soto). Puts the Cubs on pace for 180 on the season.

• Fukudome with two Ks tonight. On pace for approximately 120 this year. Not to be racist but I always thought Japanese players didn’t strike out that much?

• Crappy top of the 6th. ARam should lay off those low-and-away pitches because he either Ks or pulls weak grounders to the left side. Edmonds missed a very hittable pitch for strike three. Hard to say whether or not Soto should’ve stayed on first or taken off immediately once the ball got away from Molina. Extra runs would’ve been nice there.

• Good set-up work by Howry and Cotts, even with the solo HR to Pujols.

• Edmonds Ks three times tonight. Need him to have a better Saturday and Sunday!

• Soto goes 3-3. Would be neat if he ends up the starting C in the All-Star Game.

• Cards are a good defensive club. I wonder if they take infield before every game? Most clubs don’t these days so it would give them an edge if they do.

• Great clutch save by Woody, protecting a one-run lead. Looking less and less jittery and more and more in total control.

• Cubs win! Huge victory tonight because the worst that can happen is the Cubs come home still in 1st place after this weekend.

Re: Dome & J-ed

all patient hitters strike out. You take pitches and you’re going to get called 3rds. I’m not worried.

I don’t think Edmonds is going to light it up against the Cards, they know him too well, especially w/ him reverting to his old batting stance.

Better Than That

My family’s roots ARE Jewish!

If what I said makes me racist, I apologize. I just meant that the style of play in the Japan League was contact over striking out. So it’s surprising to see Dome racking up so many Ks – however if he was the same way with Chunichi then so be it.

When you take as many pitches as Dome does,

you’re bound to strike out.

DeRo, early in his career, was extremely tough to fan. That’s because he swung at the first fastball he saw. Every time, any location.

Not sure what you mean...

.308/.407/.337 in May
.309/.369/.340 in June

Admittedly, no power. Certainly, not much of a glove. (I still think that DeRo is a better SS, but that’s just me…)

But, he hasn’t been an OBP black hole or anything…

"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007

by DeRoMyHero on Jul 4, 2008 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

...May 1st through yesterday, he was hitting .300/.384/.329, for a .713 OPS or an 89 OPS+. I guess you can say he hasn’t been Willie Bloomquist bad, or Brian Bixler bad. But it’s not exactly impressive.

People say “no power” like it just means he’s not a 25 home run guy or something. It goes much deeper than that.

by cwyers on Jul 4, 2008 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

IMO, he’s not an everyday SS. But, what would you do if you were Jim Hendry? We have a limited number of A and B prospects. We may need another SP. We will need another RP if we can’t get Marmol straightened out. We need to have something in reserve in case we get an injury in July. Would a trade for a SS be a priority for you? If so, who would you target?

Would you prefer Cedeno? DeRo at SS/Fontenot vs. RHP?

by DeRoMyHero on Jul 4, 2008 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Power... 'eh

You’re a better stat geek than I am, but isn’t it true that OPS, while an improvement over BA as the “one number of hitting” is not all that great because it overvalues slugging percentage? I’ve heard one analysis claim that OBP is about 1.7 times as important as slugging in terms of scoring runs, and I’ve heard people say the ratio is as high as 3. A Google search yields this: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:xjw4DH0ViFcJ:www.retrosheet.org/Research/PankinM/Pankin-sabr36.pdf+relative+importance+of+obp+and+slugging&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us&client=firefox-a

Which makes the point that I was about to make, that on a high-scoring team like this year’s Cubbies extra points of OBP are worth more than extra points of slugging by even more than usual.

Furthermore, a player that gets on base a lot and doesn’t have much power can hit in a lineup position that suits his strengths and weaknesses. The Cubs have tons of power; they lead the NL in slugging pct, last I checked. If Theriot can sustain a .384 OBP (not 100% certain) and he’s used intelligently WRT lineup position and baserunning activity, that’s not bad for a guy that doesn’t cost much money.

Now he has run into a lot of outs this year. And his defense isn’t that good. So overall the Cubs might be able to find someone better. But they’d have to pay for that guy in salary or in players. They’d have to find someone whose purchase/rental price is reasonable given their probably modest improvement in production over the remaining season (insert definition of reasonable here; you have to weigh factors such as prospect development vs. instant production, and estimate the future value of those prospects, all of which is subject to differences of opinion).

July 4, 1985 Braves vs, Mets

At around 2 a.m., in the 17th inning, Atlanta relief pitcher Rick Camp hit a two-out, game-tying solo home run, his first and only MLB homer. As the portly Camp slowly rounded the bases with a big grin on his bearded face, the TV announcer yelled, “Rick Camp! Rick Camp! I don’t believe it. That certifies this as the wackiest, wildest, most improbable game in history!”

Sport is semi religious here.
