Grace picks Lohse for Player of the Game
good news for the Cubs. Is he ever right?
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
No.
We’re stuck with Grace today? Ugh.

I just don't have a warm fuzzy about DeRo in LF with Lilly on the mound.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
He had that one horrible play in Tampa
but other than that, has he not been good in LF?
''Listen, losing Soriano is no box of chocolates.'' ~Lou Piniella
I'm willing to forgive the defense in Tampa
that dome stuff is EVIL. White ball w/ white roof & fake grass. Thats just not right.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, he's made the expected plays in LF,
but he’s definitely not as comfortable as in RF.
Besides, IMO, the bench players should be the ones moving around. Why can’t Fontenot learn how to play LF????
And, I do think the constant postion switching affects DeRo’s stamina and his bat a little bit.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Fontenot can barely play second
I can’t imagine the disaster he’d be in the OF
by Shanghai Badger on Jul 5, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Then why is he in the major leagues?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Perhaps he belongs in the AL as a DH?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
He doesn't have a DH's bat.
You’re about to make me defend Mike Fontenot and I’m not going to be happy about that. He’s hardly the worst backup second baseman a team can have.
But can you defend
putting an extra grind on a starting player by having him accommodate a bench player? If that grind costs DeRo 5 starts per season for 15 points of OPS can you justify what Lou is doing?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
First you'd have to establish that he's doing that.
DeRosa, for all of your concern, seems to be having the best season of his career right now.
Last year,
his worst month was May, which was also when he moved the most. This year, his June wasn’t so good, and he was moving more with Sori out. I’m more worried about the second half.
Last year, he had a great Sept., but he played almost exclusively 2B.

I hate the lack of context.
So many of those splits like that, you have to do some work to make them meaningful. ESPN just throws the data out there.
i just thnk its interesting
seeing who struggles w/ 2 strikes, etc. Like Aramis is a good 2 strike hitter.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
Like a hitter will be batting .350 with a 1-1 count and then .211 with a 1-2 count. Not very useful, but very interesting.
Small sample size.
You have to heavily regress that to the mean. For the league in general, a guy in an 0-2 count is a very poor hitter, a guy in a 3-0 count is an All-Star.

Joseph Buck is talking about Sabathia. "Well, the Yankees need pitching..."
Asking Ken about the timetable to move Sabathia. Saying it’s possible C.C. won’t pitch his next start in an Indians uniform. Mentioned the Brewers, but the rest was drowned out by rude people talking loudly in the room over the one thing in this game worth listening to.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager

We probably aren't suitors anymore.
I’ve seen the reports of what the Brewers and Indians are offering, and we can’t match.

What's Glaus like defensively at 3B?
His numbers are similar to DeRo’s, but DeRo can play MI (including SS better than Miles).
I also saw that the VEB visitor this morning wanted to foist Kennedy on us. Didn’t he remember that AK and DeRo were FAs the same off-season and the Cards had no interest in DeRo?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
To be fair, he wanted to trade him for Marquis.
I’d probably do that deal, find a way to get rid of Kennedy later.
Glaus has done well at third this season, according to ZR.
It's tough for me to judge DeRo's defense at 3B (or anywhere other than SS)
because he moves so much and never has a chance to settle down and concentrate on one position. When he was exclusively a SS (in his early days) he was very good and steady—though certainly not GG.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
It is helping the team,
but it certainly doesn’t give DeRo a chance to maximize his ability at any one position. It also means he needs more days off, which costs him ABs.

Depends on your definition of valuable.
Most outstanding player = Soto
Most valuable player = DeRo
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Soto's been our best hitter, and he's been a great defensive catcher.
I’d say that’s MVP caliber, not just for the team but for the league.
I would really consider
putting Soto in the 3 hole and dropping Lee and Ramirez to 4 and 5.

no. but he's never played a full big league season
he’s a great player, but lets not put EVERYTHING on him.

I respect your opinion,
but I disagree. No one is putting everything on him. He would have Lee protecting him.
Putting everything on him is expecting him to carry our offense—which we wouldn’t be doing.

the 3 hole is so critical to a line up
and i think that he has the talent to do it eventually. but i’d like to see him continue to focus on his defense & the staff.
I just want him in the best possible position to succeed.

DeRo is now 8-15 vs. Lohse
with 2 HR and 1 3B, 3 BB, and 2 RBI. Will Lohse pitch to him in the future?

The next sentence was:
“Some guys come up in a situation like that and they think they’re going to hit the ball out of the park.”
I assure you, Ryan Theriot never thinks that.

A little less fuel for the Theriot haters
nice clutch hit by the guy who can do no right!
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
:snort:
uh huh. no one doubt his ability to hit a single to right. its just everything else.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions
1. It was a single
2. It went to the opposite field
3. The location of the batted ball was pure luck to not be caught
4. NO POWER!
Eh, that’s all I can think of. Just trying to bring the hate.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Wow never seen a guy receive so much hate
AFTER an RBI. Gotta love BCB.

As a joke.

I actually really like Riot
i think he’s a good guy who likes the game.
I just don’t think he’s a major league SS.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions
I think he's a good utility player
I don’t think he’s an every day player
by Shanghai Badger on Jul 5, 2008 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions
BTW, I have no problem with the complaints about his defensive lapses
as he does make more than his share of mistakes in the field. But I have no problem with a SS who does not have power but has a .380-.400 OBP. We don’t need power at every position. Theriot gets his share of clutch hits. He works counts and is scrappy.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
The problem is, you have somebody with defensive lapses and no power
You start to wonder if it’s worth it
I’m still on the fence about Riot, but i know why people are frustrated with him
I'll be impressed when he can make a routine throw
Without tapping the ball in his glove first.
No, actually I won’t—but it would be nice if he’d do that.

that is exceptionally irritating..
