If he walks or hits the first guy
It seems to mean he doesn’t have it – because he blows the save almost every single time.
Even if he loses 75% of the time when he hits/walks the first guy?
Do you really think it’s that hard?
Agree to disagree
I think even Howry could get a save once in 5 tries or so with a man on first and no outs.
if it isn't, why aren't there more lights-out closers in the league?
how many can you name?
by Shanghai Badger on Jul 5, 2008 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions
saving is hard - i agree
But not so hard that it’s almost impossible to get a save when you hit or walk the first guy
he's learning on the job
the last 3 outs are different, do you agree tot hat?
he’s saved 12 straight before today. Thats pretty good.
And he’d given up baserunners too.

NO!
If a pitcher blows the game 80% of the time or more when a certain event happens – then you pull him after that event.
seriously
so… Z’s not allowed to pitch on days when he’s only had 1 banana and its over 80 degrees, b/c he fails to do well everytime?

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 6:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Fine if you think that
But I wouldn’t mind a rule that where a starter gives up 4 runs in the first inning he gets pulled if he has a history of sucking after that. Obviously your standards are different for a starter because it’s still early in hte game
That's an absolutly ridiculous rule.

He would be looking over his shoulder only when he walks/hits the first batter
I see it no different from pulling a starter if he gives up 5 runs in the first.
Hitting/walking the first batter has clearly shown that he doesn’t have anything that day so far this year.
you pull Z when he gives up 5 runs in the first?
I wouldn’t. you trust your ace to ride it out and get it out and keep you in the game.
i see the closer as the ace of the bullpen. same thing.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 5, 2008 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions
No - I wouldn't pull Z in that sitaution
But if I had the stats and every time he gives up 5 in the first he goes on to give up 12 runs in the first 4 innings, I would certainly consider it.

It's a cause for concern...this team has an opportunity to win a championship
And you have to have a guy you can rely on in the 9th to win one.
And you learn to rely on a guy in the 9th
by him going out there and doing it… and then bouncing back after the occassional bad outing.
At least thats how I see it. I don’t know for sure if thats the best way, b/c the team I’ve loved for as long as I can remember hasn’t won one. But its what we’ve got. And as a cub fan i have to hope that its right.

Mariano Rivera
Had the bases loaded with no outs today, a run already in, and the Yankees staring at three straight loses to the Sox. So, shut-down closers do put the first two on sometimes.
Don't blow it boys!
But most shut down closers occassionally get out of that situation - like Rivera
Kerry Wood has yet to do so
And again
Rivera has been closing games for over a decade. Woody is learning on the job.
‘Member the game against the Dodgers when they loaded the bases before Woody got out of it w/ that K?
He can do it, he just didn’t get it done today. Sure it sucks, but to say that he can’t do it is ridiculous. And this comparison to Rivera is premature at best and idiotic at worst.
Name one closer in the history of the universe that NEVER blew a game against a good team. It happens. Ice your wounds and get over it.

I Agree Mostly
except that Wood was closing last year…even in his minor league rehab stints. Now, you may well be right in that “these things happen” but the Nervous Nellie in me wonders if there is anything Woody can yet improve on so he can be our vintage-era Rivera or Sutter.
Eat More Katsui
He didn't walk or hit the first batter in that Dodgers game
I still think he’s a good closer – or at least a decent closer. He now trails only Isringhausen in blown saves this year – and I believe all but one came in games where he hit or walked the first batter.
Who are you?
If your for the Cards, well we dont need to talk about Isrighhausen
And if your for the Brewers…. well must we bring up the Gagne effect?
I seem to recall a game what was it THURSDAY?
When the Brewers blew a 5 run lead.

Been on this site for many, many games....win or lose
just because YOU haven’t noticed me doesn’t mean I’m a troll. Woody’s blown 5 saves this year, and almost all have been when he’s walked or hit the first batter of the inning, so my point is BEYOND valid. Yet immediately, I’m labeled as a troll. That pisses me off. So if I’m coming off as an a-hole to you, you know what, I’ll get over it. As for you telling people to change your tone, if you feel self-important enough to do that, fire away.

Sports is a passionate thing, and losing one like that stings
And Kerry has got phenomenal stuff, he just needs to throw strikes to win. So I’m extra bothered when he doesn’t. I’m also troubled about the obvious trend that has appeared in the games he’s blown.
I also apologize if I’ve offended you, but my point was valid, regardless if people didn’t like the way I said it. Kerry’s going to feel lousy about today, and he should. I didn’t personally attack him. I pointed out that he’s showing a trend during his failed opportunities. It was not the ump’s fault he was missing the strike zone, it was his. Kerry’s a great player, and my hope is that he takes his game to the next level. He’s got to.
Point taken on the deep breath.

Woody is our closer, Gang, for better or for worse. For the vast majority of the time this season he has been great. Remember, this is his first season as a closer. I think he is catching on pretty well for OJT.
I will say this, he has to learn to calm down and get that final out with his good stuff. He will learn. If he doesn’t, we’re screwed.

Boy....
Wood has been a decent closer for, 80+ games now. Sometimes THEY FAIL.
It’s too bad, but there ain’t a damn thing we can do about it. I did not see the bad call, but I was able to listen—poor Ronnie. (I think I heard a “JESUS!” out of him during that inning.)
In this market, Trevor Hoffman has been closing for almost 15 years - got the Padres to a damn WS - and now, that he’s on the down side, he’s booed. He’s headed to the HOF, but he’s getting booed.
Some people here just need to chill. This team is getting healthy, A-Ram may be showing signs of coming out of his slump. Lee’s hot. Soriano’s return will really help.
