Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Cardinals, Saturday 7/5, 2:55 CT
Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals, Jul 5, 2008 2:55 PM CDT
The weather's going to be great in St. Louis. The even better news, for those of you who aren't scheduled to get this game on the Fox-TV channel in your area, is the weather forecast for New York City:'
This Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 79. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Why is this good? Because the Yankees/Red Sox game is Fox's only other game today. If that game is rain-delayed or rained out, Fox will have to send the Cubs and Cardinals to the entire country (except for NYC and Boston).
So do your rain dance for New York!
Lineup, courtesy of Bruce Miles:Theriot, SS Fukudome, RF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Edmonds, CF Soto, C DeRosa, LF Fontenot, 2B Lilly, P

Ted Lilly threw seven strong innings against the Cardinals on May 3 in St. Louis, and won, the only game the Cubs won in that series. A repeat performance today would be great. Kyle Lohse was the losing pitcher that afternoon, and the Cubs beat him up pretty good, including a three-run HR from Mike Fontenot (obviously, this is why Li'l Mikey is getting the start today). Otherwise, Mark DeRosa also hits Lohse well (6-for-13, a HR), and is in LF today.
As noted above, today's game is on Fox. At posting time there was no available link on the Fox Sports site showing how many markets were carrying this game, but since Fox's other game today is Yankees/Red Sox, I'm guessing it's not many outside the Midwest. For other games today see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

With Soriano supposedly taking BP today, things are starting to look really good.
Hopefully he goes down to AAA and gets the junk out of his system, comes up here and gets white hot the rest of the way.

The Tribune hinted that he might not be back in the big leagues till right after the All-Star break.
So his first major league at-bats will most likely be the All-Star game itself

Interesting
It’d be nice if he could face MLB pitching without having it count for anything. Unless you count the World Series.

Let’s look at OPS cwyers, that’s a great idea, the guy’s PHYSICALLY limited.
You’d rather have John McDonald? If we look at any offensive category, when’s he hit well?
I understand he’s one of the best defensively, and that’s why he has a job, but give Theriot a break.

were talking about Theriot hitting, and now lets bring in the defensivly stats? Wow.
Now you’re just going overboard. I watched the whole Sox game yesterday, not only did Uribe make two huge mental gaffes in the field (which ok, maybe Theriot would’ve done the same) but he looked absolutely LOST at the plate. And if Theriot continues to hit .157 all of July, then we can talk. I don’t get it, but EVERY pre-game thread now has to have its own Theriot bashing session even when the previous post has nothing to do w/ him. A lot of this seems unwarranted to me.

He hasn't hit well for
power since April. But he’s still getting on base a ton, and I’m fine with that. Almost every hitter in our line-up can hit the ball out of the park besides Theriot. I’m fine with having a singles hitter who gets on base a good amount in our line-up. You putting down Theriot is getting about annoying as someone else comments about Soriano and Rich Harden IMO. Just let it go we know you don’t think he’s a very good player. That doesn’t change the fact he’s having a good year, even though you keep mentioning everything he’s not doing well.
by cubsfan25 on Jul 5, 2008 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, well, everything he's not doing well...
...is hitting the ball, fielding the ball or running the bases. All that’s left is pitching, and I bet hes not very good at that, either.
by cwyers on Jul 5, 2008 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You mean
hitting the well for power right? He’s hitting the ball you can’t say he’s not hitting. Plus Theriot has ran the bases MUCH better in the last month, his high CS rate is from April and early May when Lou tried to make him a 40-50 SB type hitter. Your bashing of Theriot getting really really silly, I never once seen someone call a guy a bad hitter when he his hitting over 306 with a 386 OBP, thats just insane. Umm yeah thats hitting, like it or not. Hitting for power isn’t just hitting you know that right?
by cubsfan25 on Jul 5, 2008 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
how are you judging how he runs the bases?
if its sb success rate, then that’s not a very good way to judge the way he “runs the bases”
i hope you’re using something different.

Cwyers
is a very smart poster, and one of the better posters on this board IMO. But the one thing I really disagree with is his nonstop ways of putting Theriot down. It’s almost like MIBNIU has hijacked his screen name and is bringing up Theriot always and putting him down but in a much smarter way. We all know you don’t like the guy, but you don’t have to keep talking about how bad you think he is, especially when he’s not as bad as he’s trying to make him sound.

Maybe
it’s because I don’t read this board everyday. But it seems like at least a few times a week I see him making some type of negative comments towards Theriot. I know it’s a free board, but saying negative things about a player over and over again gets a little old. Especially when it’s pretty much the same type of comments, and nothing has changed in the last month or so. Plus I think Cwyers is a smart poster who knows his stuff, so it kinda bothers me that he acts MDBNIU with this Theriot stuff.

read his blog, it will make someone’s head spin.
but we cannot find a better starter. i dont disagree with finding a defensive minded shortstop to back him up when we deal cedeno for other pieces, i think that’s a great idea bc theriot doesnt field all that well.

I agree
getting a defensive specialist for the bench at SS is a good idea. In a big game or playoff game removing Theriot late in the game for defense isn’t a bad idea. But getting most of the playing time and Theriot hitting the way he has this season he’s a fine at SS. Adding a SS is towards the buttom of things this team needs IMO.

Theriot, May 1st through today: .299/.382/.327
Theriot, past two seasons: .289/.358/.377
Theriot, career: .286/.356/.373
There is a lot more evidence that Theriot is bad at hitting baseballs then there is evidence that he’s good at hitting baseballs.
by cwyers on Jul 5, 2008 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So you want
a shortstop that’s about 6’2’’ 210, used to pitch in highschool that throws 96 mph from the infield, a 25-30 home run power guy with great bat speed and a .900 OPS. Oh, and he doesn’t ever boot a ball…EVER.
Well, who wouldn’t like that? But, with the team that we have, and with the limited ability to aquire pieces, we should be OK with Theriot at short. I’ve read what you guys have been saying for the past two weeks about how “he sucks.” But honestly, let’s look towards other parts of our club.
You keep mentioning Theriot’s physical limitations and then complaining that his SLG will never reach .400

Lets just
no longer look at batting average or OBP and just focus on OPS from now on? Of course OPS is important, but when is hitting 300 and getting OBP at a 380 rate a bad hitter? This is just insane, and not worth my time talking about anymore.
by cubsfan25 on Jul 5, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OPS includes OBP.
It is more complete than OBP when looking at a ballplayer. OPS+ or linear weights are more complete still.
by cwyers on Jul 5, 2008 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand that
but the only thing that makes Theriot a subpar hitter is the lack of power, the batting average and OPS are very strong. For a SS I’m fine with two of three of them.
by cubsfan25 on Jul 5, 2008 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya know...
...my feeling is Theriot is gonna stay the SS for a few reasons:
-We are winning
-He’s scrappy, and no matter how you quantify it, scrappiness is encouraged by fans and coaches alike
—His OBP is still decent
And finally, what’s our other option? Cedeno?
Dan
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
by dtpollitt on Jul 5, 2008 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would say
386 is a little better then decent, and thats with him doing bad the last few days. He’s most likely to bring his numbers up again like he did in the last three months. On teams filled with power hitters, most teams like to have a good average hitting good OBP guy who has some speed on the roster. This is the kind of player White Sox fans call in to talk radio shows and say their line-up needs.
by cubsfan25 on Jul 5, 2008 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right
his obp is pretty good, but i think we’ll see him start to slip in the 8 spot. In the 2 spot, he will see fastballs, and that’s attributed to his high batting average, but he’s been VERY patient.
the one thing about white sox fans is that they live for scrappy, when that’s not always the best route. I see where cwyers is coming from, but we have no other choice. Our middle infielders are bad defensively, (i’ll keep cedeno out of that) but we have to do what we can with what we have. constantly bashing theriot and bringing up khalil greene and other shortstops (Who arent going to come here) is not the greatest fight to pick. especially when we need a starter and a few relievers.
by serbianking33 on Jul 5, 2008 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im fine
with Theriot at SS. Sure I wish he played better defense and hit for more power. But I also understand that you aren’t going to have a hitter who plays great defense or hits for really good power at every postion. If Theriot can be a asset to the team by hitting for average and getting OBP alot I’m happy especially if he’s hitting 8th.

Why “except for NYC and Boston”? Assuming a rain-out, why wouldn’t those markets see the Cubs/Cards game as well?
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at anything having to do with MLB, Fox, and blackout/coverage restrictions, but it just seems unusually asinine that the NYC and Boston folks would see alternate Fox programming (3 hours of Prison Break?) instead of another game.

They would get the Cubs/Cards...
.... during a rain delay.
But after a rain delay, the home markets would go back to the Sox/Yanks game. The rest of the country - to keep the commercial rotation in sync, if for no other reason - would probably stay with the Cubs/Cardinals, depending on how long the delay is.

Ryan Theriot
Theriot owns the highest batting average on the team and is second among the regulars in OBP. Yet some in the peanut gallery want to howl and scream that he should be benched in favor of Ronny Cedeno and his three brain cells. Lovely stuff.
Pitching is KING. We don't add a frontline starting pitcher and a quality bullpen arm then this season will have yet another sad conclusion.

Amen
Ronny Cedeno generally sucks. He had a nice 6 week stretch during part-time duty that resulted in members of the peanut gallery going nutty and proclimating that the Cubs had Hanley Ramirez .v2 right under their nose. It’s comical really.

Theriot is batting. Therefore. he's the regular SS.
Defensively and running the bases, he’s not making any mistakes that Ronny wouldn’t make. So there’s no downside to playing Theriot.

How about Mr (or Mrs) Outside Hire?
Realistically we aren’t gonna make a change at SS anytime soon, unless Theriot really struggles for a prolonged period. I think he is just scrappy enough where we can reevaluate SS after the season is over.

Lou likes Theriot, and that is good enough for me
Theriot is an overachiever that brings a spark to this team. He is well liked and plays his tail off. If Sweet Lou is fine with him as everyday shortstop then it is good enough for me. Because my eyes support Lou’s faith. Besides, last time I checked I’m pretty sure the Cubs didn’t have Derek Jeter or Jimmy Rollins lying around in waste.

No doubt
It’s more fair to compare Theriot to what our current other options are, rather than what the rest of the NL shortstops are doing. Unless we are planning to trade for a shortstop, we have what we have. Name one team that has the best defense in their league at every position.

Random posting plea...
if you use links in your post, can you please try to remember to check the box that says “Open in New Window?” I know it’s an extra step and I wish this were the default so you wouldn’t have to worry about it.
My reasoning: If the link opens up in the same window, when you return back to BCB, you lose your place w.r.t. to all the new (unread) comments). Either they all become read, so you have to scroll through the entire thread to try and find what you’ve missed, or it reverts back to an earlier iteration, so you have to refresh, at which point everything becomes read and you still have to go back through the entire thread.
At least that’s been my experience – is that true for others?
I know I can (and should) right-click on the link and thus control its destiny, but I don’t always remember to do that.
Also, are there reasons why opening in the same window is a good thing?

Probably the only "good" reason
for having a new link NOT open a new window is because some people have “pop-ups disabled” in their browsers. However, such people (I have been one in the past) get pretty used to right-clicking, which is the work-around.
Anyway, I agree that it would be handy to have “new window” be the default setting, for the same reasons you cite.

ALL the links I put in posts and comments are “open in new window”. There are some at SBN who don’t like this and that’s why it’s not given at an option. I’m going to keep pushing for this.
In the meantime you can always right-click on a link and either open in a new tab (if you have a tabbed browser) or in a new window using the context menu.

Here's the explanation again.
The home markets of the teams (NYC and Boston) get the game no matter what. So say there’s a rain delay there. In that case the entire country gets Cubs/Cardinals. But once the rain delay ends the home markets go back to the game involving their teams. The rest of the country probably would stick with Cubs/Cardinals at that point.
A total rainout in NYC would solve this problem today.

The World Ain't Flat Anymore
This whole notion of “territorial rights” went out with the geocentric theory of the universe. With the interconnectivity of society as brought on by high-speed communication and transportation, regional boundaries and “team markets” are nothing but fallacies.
ALL teams can claim ANY territory to be their sphere of interest, and as such blackout rules should be summarily banished to the scrap heap.

The way things should be and the way they currently are.
Unfortunately, blackouts seem to make sense only to the stations that want to keep your eyes glued to their signal. As long as they are willing to pay for that exclusivity there will always be a Bud Selig willing to grant it to them and pocket the extra fee. The viewers? They’ll have their eye sockets glued to the TV set, they seem to think. Pathetic.

How much of a batting average downgrade are people willing to accept to upgrade defensively at SS?
There’s people who don’t put value on the act of getting on first base so batting around 300 with a 390 OBA sucks to them but you need people on base. Lee had 106 RBIS in 2005 because nobody was on base ahead of him,.

Fox, Selig and Todd Stroger/Rod Blagoevich/Rich Daley are in a conspiracy to give us one reason to be happy to live in Chicago or Cook County while they tax us to pieces.
For those that don’t live here Cook Countians now pay the highest sales tax in the US. On top of that we have property taxes at one of the highest rates and we pay state income tax. Also gas, cigarettes and liquor tax rates are top tier.
There’s a reason why everyone who lives anywhere near the Cook county border drives a few miles to save tons of money.
