Since I turn 40 tomorrow I'm looking at the last 10 years from all different angles and writing about them at different places. In my politics group I mused on politics, in my Bears group I mused on the Bears, etc.
So my thoughts on the Cubs. And by the way of all the groups Cubs may be the most positive 10 years.
On July 7, 1998 we had a slugger pursuing a record, a rookie pitcher setting the world on fire and a pretty good baseball team that would eventually make the playoffs.
In 10 years the Cubs have made 3 trips to the playoffs and had 2 other seasons over 500.
We've had a ROY an MVP many all stars a gold glove and a silver slugger or two.
We've seen the arrival and rise of a young star pitcher named big Z who was just a prospect not hyped very much in 1998.
We've seen the meteoric rise of a young Mark Prior and the dramatic fall.
We saw the rise of Sosa and the downfall of Sosa.
That kid pitcher in 1998 we've seen rise to the top sink down to the bottom and is now rising to the top again in a different role.
We've seen 5 different managers including a a few months from Bruce Kimm.
We've seen the Cubs finally venture into the Japanese market to bring us our new star.
We were still mourning Harry on July 7, 1998 and we would soon lose Jack. We saw ups and downs in the booth since 1998 and now we have a nice team in place who many of us like more and more every day.
The team is on the upswing right now.
I have a good feeling that the next 10 are going to be even better. The Cubs in my 30s were better than the Cubs in my 20s and the Cubs of my 20s were better than the Cubs of my 10s so hopefully this is a pattern.
Thanks for letting me muse and rant. Would love to hear what others think when they look back on the last 10 years for our beloved.
