For those of you who were in the diary where we debated WHIP...
...THIS is what I meant when I say pitchers don’t have a lot of control over their hits. Dempster allows quite a few more hits tonight if he defense wasn’t making those kinds of plays tonight (Ramirez with two great plays, Dome turning a single into a fielder’s choice as he doubles off Dunn).
is this translated to mean
good thing those balls weren’t hit to Theriot??
by LT on Jul 8, 2008 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions
No, but I won't say that it's NOT a good thing.
Simply that sometimes the defense makes great plays behind you, and you look like a better pitcher than you are at the time; sometimes they miss plays they should make and you look like a worse pitcher than you are at the time. Over time the luck should even out, but over a lot more time than I think people realize at times.
You and I were talking about this the other night...
...what did you say a pitcher CAN control? I can’t remember.

I think there were three or four things...
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
There's all kinds of things a pitcher can control.
The big three are walks, strikeouts and home runs – the Three True Outcomes. Ground ball to fly ball ratio is another thing pitchers can control – although being a groundball pitcher is slightly overrated. Stranding baserunners is another thing pitchers control somewhat (high K pitchers do better in that regard, for example). Popup rates are something pitchers control that are helpful – a popup’s almost as good as a strikeout. Controlling the running game. Extra bases on hits.

Anybody read Olney and Neyer's reactions on ESPN.com?
Both pretty negative. Considering they both said yesterday that the deal wasn’t happening, I think they might just be a little bitter. Olney claims that there had been no discussions about the trade until last night, which goes against everything that the Trib, Sun-Times, etc have been saying for weeks. I normally really like Olney’s posts, but this one seemed to really be trying to save face.
The cubs had to do something
Harden although an injury risk was probably the better deal financially between Bedard and Burnett. His Salary does not hand cuff them for next year if they want to get out get somebody esle.

You're on demand with these stats
I have a question—what stat website do you mostly look at for a pitcher?
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
Depends.
If I need splits or I need to go back more than five years, baseball-reference.com. For FIP and xFIP, hardballtimes.com. Fangraphs.com has pitchs thrown along with speeds and some other nice data.
Sweet
hardballtimes looks to have some good stuff at their website. Thanks for the sites

Pretty sure that Al has been poo-pooing this trade for a while now.
Bruce Miles has been dropping hints about it for days, though.
I bet Al will like the trade now
since we didn’t give up as much as was thought to be needed to give up. I see this trade as Gallager for Harden and Go-Dan basically.

.298.
I’d be more concerned about the fact that he played half his games in Oakland. Still, I think he should take Marquis’ spot in the rotation as soon as possible.

by santoswoodenlegs on Jul 8, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
It's not predictive at all.
BABIP is what I call a “diagnostic” stat – you expect it to regress to the mean very heavily. A pitcher’s K-rate is more stable, and regresses to the mean much more slowly – it has better predictive value.
I think Batting Average of Balls in play......
