For those of you who were in the diary where we debated WHIP...

...THIS is what I meant when I say pitchers don’t have a lot of control over their hits. Dempster allows quite a few more hits tonight if he defense wasn’t making those kinds of plays tonight (Ramirez with two great plays, Dome turning a single into a fielder’s choice as he doubles off Dunn).

by cwyers on Jul 8, 2008 8:36 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why did I write doubles off?

by LT on Jul 8, 2008 8:37 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, but I won't say that it's NOT a good thing.

Simply that sometimes the defense makes great plays behind you, and you look like a better pitcher than you are at the time; sometimes they miss plays they should make and you look like a worse pitcher than you are at the time. Over time the luck should even out, but over a lot more time than I think people realize at times.

There's all kinds of things a pitcher can control.

The big three are walks, strikeouts and home runs – the Three True Outcomes. Ground ball to fly ball ratio is another thing pitchers can control – although being a groundball pitcher is slightly overrated. Stranding baserunners is another thing pitchers control somewhat (high K pitchers do better in that regard, for example). Popup rates are something pitchers control that are helpful – a popup’s almost as good as a strikeout. Controlling the running game. Extra bases on hits.

Brewers announcers griping about balls and strikes

do Len and Bob do that? I don’t seem to remember them harping on it like the other teams homers…

Do you remember last year,

late in the season, the Cubs pounded Harang. The start before, he pitched 10 innings. Doesn’t seem like he’s been the same since then.

According to Pat,

the Reds had an extra inning game earlier. Two days after a start (his throw day?) he pitched four innings.

Hasn’t been the same since…

Just read on SI.com

That both Murton and Patterson will start in AAA for the A’s. Gallagher immediately added to the A’s rotation.

""I heard it was going to happen. Still it's always a surprise," Harden said. "It's a bit of a shock but it will be good. They've got a good team and a chance of doing something special. "

Anybody read Olney and Neyer's reactions on ESPN.com?

Both pretty negative. Considering they both said yesterday that the deal wasn’t happening, I think they might just be a little bitter. Olney claims that there had been no discussions about the trade until last night, which goes against everything that the Trib, Sun-Times, etc have been saying for weeks. I normally really like Olney’s posts, but this one seemed to really be trying to save face.

The cubs had to do something

Harden although an injury risk was probably the better deal financially between Bedard and Burnett. His Salary does not hand cuff them for next year if they want to get out get somebody esle.
