Big Z to start the ASG (unconfirmed)
Yahoo Fantasy sports is reporting that Big Z is going to start the All-Star game.

I know the source seems really odd, but I don't think this is being made up. What does everybody think of this. Personally I think Webb or Volquez may have been more deserving of the start, but Im pumped to see Big Z on the mound at Yankee Stadium starting for the NL.

Keep in mind that the ASG starter is dependent less on who deserves it, as who is available based on rotations and days off. Maybe Volquez and Lincecum aren’t and Z is.
I still haven’t seen this linked anywhere or mentioned anywhere other than this, and their use of the word “elected” is odd.

Lincecum
is apparently scheduled to start Sunday at Wrigley.

Which is why he likely won't start the ASG...
... or maybe not pitch at all, unless there’s extra innings.

Not nice
San Francisco flipped his rotation spot to give him an extra start. I would understand this
if they were in the race but I guess it helps his chances for a Cy Young and since Lou is doing the
same with Dempster I can’t get that upset.
IF Z is starting does that mean he can’t pitch Friday the first game after the AS break. I know at
best he would pitch a few innings but I don’t like it.

Umm
SF is only five back. I know its tough to believe, but they are in contention. Cant blame them for trying to get Lincecum out there.
On the other hand, I thought Z was scheduled to start against Lincecum on Sunday.

Makes sense
And if so, it wouldn’t surprise me if Z started the ASG. I know I read somewhere that Z and Lincecum would be head up, but I am either mistaken or things have changed.

I heard on CSN this morning
that Demp might not pitch in the ASG at all.
Go ahead, Z me.

Okay Al,
You can answer this one…because I sure can’t. Last Cub to start the ASG? Has there ever been one?

I was wondering about mad dog
but wasn’t sure. If this is true, I guess it means Z will likely go a couple innings. Talk about crazy love for the Cubs this year. Most of it deserving!

Nope.
Tom Glavine started in ‘92.
The last (and as far as I can tell, ONLY) Cub pitcher to start an All-Star Game was Claude Passeau in 1946.

Maybe
Wikipedia? He’s listed as the winning pitcher.

Those Yahoo fantasy baseball notes
can be a bit funky. It cites the AP. The only AP stories about Z and the All-Star game I found on Google News were general stories about who made the team. I think someone at Yahoo was loose with the word “start”, which makes this FanPost misleading and wrong, unfortunately.

It actually makes a lot of sense for Z
to start the ASG. He will pitch what, Thursday? Then throwing a couple of innings as the ASG starter would fit nice to keep him on schedule, and his arm fresh, but not too fresh, know what I mean? So, I hope this is report is right, Z deserves it.

Z pitches tommorw
Lou jiggered the rotation to get Dempster the extra start and to keep Marquis away from the Reds
hitters. Marquis ( for those of you who remember him) will pitch on Friday on 9 days rest.
I expect Lou’s theory is he beat the Giant’s once , he can beat them again.

Ok, I forgot that Lou moved up the order.
Still makes sense to get Z some work in the ASG.

Would be nice
It would be nice to see Z start the game. I don’t think he necessarily deserves it. If I had to pick I would say Lincecum over Volquez, only because he’s got a couple more years under his belt. Though it would be cool if Z started it and Kerry saved it.
Throw in a Fukudome squeeze play and a Ramirez home run and maybe we can get the WS back to the National League for the first time in forever.

This is Volquez's 4th season.
And Lincecum’s 2nd. I’d agree that Lincecum would be the better choice though.
