Does Gaudin Fill The "Void" In The 'Pen?
So the Cubs acquired Rich Harden as you may have heard. Some guy from Oakland, I never heard of. Ok so I'm excited. Beyond exited. But actually what sweetened the deal for me was the acquisition of Chad Gaudin in addition to Harden. Gaudin has done a good (not Marmol-esque) job in Oakland this year and has even filled the spot starter void. I think prior to this deal, the Cubs were looking for a player like Colorado's Brian Fuentes, an established out-getter for the 'pen to give Lou more options late in the game. Do you think that Gaudin is enough? Should the Cubs try to market him or someone like Cedeno as Troy Tulowitzki (sp?) has just gone on the DL again? What do you think?

I was pretty excited
to see a guy like Gaudin included. Very solid numbers, and he’s young. The question is, whose spot does he take?
Is Gaudin
a Righty or a Lefty? Mabye he can be another long reliver with Liber.

I didn't realize there was a "void" in our pen
Gaudin is a righty and Hendry said they look at him as a swing guy-long reliever/starter type. He’s just another good arm down there now.
Gaudin
essentially is Gallagher at this point. This trade is a major Cub coup.
"Chicago Cubs fans are ninety percent scar tissue." - George F. Will
Not a horrible comparison
Gallagher maybe has a slightly higher ceiling but I’ll still take it. On this team he’s like another Lieber. The depth on this team is now amazing. It has to be the best in all of baseball. It’s really built to last a full rigorous season. Hendry has really earned his paycheck this season.
Go ahead, Z me.
No.
Our ‘pen is fundamentally strong, but has been weakened by usage patterns. We added a pitcher in Harden who we will not let go long innings. The ‘pen will still be overused. Adding another arm or even three new arms doesn’t fix the underlying problem.
That said, Gaudin appears to be a nice piece to have gotten.
At the very least,
he’s an arm that others in the division / league haven’t seen much of – if at all – this year, so he’ll be somewhit of an unkown in the 2nd half.
Nice!

Gaudin makes me feel a lot better about losing Sean.
I know Hendry didn’t want to give up Gallagher either, but when Beane offered up Gaudin, Jimmy agreed and pulled the trigger.

I've been loving the Gaudin get until I went to his Baseball-Reference page.
Similar Pitchers through Age 24
1. Ray Burris
2. Andy Hansen
3. Jason Marquis
4. Eric Plu- ... wait, who was the last one? What?! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those numbers are skewed by him being a mediocre starter last year.
He won’t be starting for the Cubs. I think the Cubs are done dealing.

Hendry said he'd still be looking.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Maddux trade still happens.

Well...
... I’d still do that deal if it’s doable, because I like Maddux and think he could add a lot of wisdom to this team.
We’ll see. There are still three weeks till the deadline.

Wisdom?
Why not hire another pitching coach? If I wanted wisdom, I’d read a book.
In all seriousness, I’m with you in that it would be awesome to see Maddux in a Cubs uniform one more time. I just would prefer the Maddux of 1995.

We all would.
The wisdom imparted by a teammate who has the knowledge that Maddux does is invaluable to any team… maybe more so than from a coach.

And considering that the Mesa folks made a slight change
in Hill’s delivery, we could trade for Maddux and get rid of Rothschild. I mean, if Hill’s problem was so minor, then Rothschild is in the wrong business. When I read the article about the change in Hill, how minor it was, I was FURIOUS!!! Damn, if that is all the problem was…..well, now I bite my tongue. Get Greg for starter #5 AND player/pitching coach.

It may not have been as minor as you think.
This isn’t a black & white issue.

When I watched him pitch at Iowa last...
...He looked aloof and completely elsewhere, not going after ground balls, throwing wild pitches galore and walking lots of people. The Rich Hill I saw two years ago on the same mound was in control and confident, finding his location, fielding his position, etc… I don’t think that we’re in any rush to sell low on Hill when we can just be patient with him so that he works out whatever issues he has and can one day be a productive major league starter again.
I think that we gained the key piece we needed yesterday, and there’s no need to trade the farm for Maddux, who will, for sure garner a lot of trade interest from many teams. I agree, however, that if the price is right, we should go after him, but not when a player such as Hill has such low value.

With Murton gone...
...it’s hard to picture a Maddux trade still happening – unless, I suppose, the Padres are willing to do a straight-up swap for Marquis. But is that realistic?

Done Dealing?
Your probably right for now Al. Although a minor tweak in an August deal is a possibility I feel. You never know what you may need due to injuries, matchups, etc.

We need a MLB shortstop....

Anyone know the correct pronunciation?
We went through this with Dome so we should just hash this away from the get go. I’ve heard a lot of Go-Dan. I read it as Gaw-din. Anyone?
Go ahead, Z me.
I heard "Go-DAN" last night.
This, incidentally, gives the Cubs three Cajuns on the team. (Gaudin, like Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot, is from Louisiana.)

Gaudin will help the bullpen
He can be a valuable swing man. Pitch middle relief, pitch set-up and even spot start. Big upgrade over the deteriorated Michael Wuertz.

Gaudin
I suppose he’s an upgrade from Wuertz, but we already have Wuertz and Lieber as “long men” out in the pen. Don’t get me wrong – I think the Cubs were smart to get Gaudin. But less for his presence in the pen than for his ability to fill in as a starter if anyone gets hurt. I still think the Cubs should consider sending Gaudin to Iowa to start every fifth day so he gets used to starting in case one of the Cubs starters goes down.

BAD
Gaudin is someone that Lou trusts to bridge gap from starter to Marmol no way do you send him to Iowa. They have people in Iowa stretching there arms out (Hart) and if they need someone to sport start one game I think Gaudin could pitch 5 innings without stretching his arm out.
