Comments from my buddy the A's fan
Wanted to pass along these encouraging observations from a friend of mine out in the Bay Area, who's a very good observer of the game (he plays some ball himself so he knows what he's talking about).
Hope it helps us both, but it's "hard" to lose Harden. Basically, if he's
healthy (and that's the big wildcard) he's unhittable. He had a slight
meltdown in his last start, but that was a real anomaly. He has this
deceptively easy delivery style -- yet tops out in the high 90s.
I think this is the longest stretch he's been healthy, so hopefully he'll
last the rest of the season (and many more). He's really fun to watch pitch,
because he doesn't look like he's working at all, and batters are off
balance cuz they can't figure him out. Gaudin is good, too. His numbers
aren't that good this year, but he's a solid guy to have in the pen.
This should be a real shot in the arm to the Cubbies.
We shall see.....I'm thinking good thoughts about Harden-san's health and well-being.

did your buddy play ball in college?
Before Edmonds: 24-16, (.600); With Edmonds: 30-20 (.600)
Edmonds with Cubs: .276 / .375 / .552

He actually plays now...
...in a sort of semi-formal pickup league they have every Sunday out there. It sounds really fun – another one of those SF things that will hopefully someday propagate to the rest of the country. Old guys like us (40s) could use some good healthy hardball, although I have to admit I’d be kinda leery facing an actual pitched baseball for the first time in a few decades.

Town Ball
is big here in Iowa. Do you live in the Midwest? I and Rambler19 of this blog play in a very competitive league in Eastern Iowa which has varying levels of talent. Some teams have minor league guys, Division 1,2 & 3 guys and some that didn’t play college. Its a good time.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

I have a friend who plays catcher in a league here in Des Moines. They usually play 2-3 games every week.
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.
