Always a chance

I suspect when he gets promoted it will just come out of the blue.

I fully expect him to be in Peoria in time for the game in Wrigley.

there are new roster changes as of today

I’m listening to the Daytona game, and Marquez Smith just pinch hit. That means roster moves have taken place. In looking around, there are a number of moves that took place late last night, including:

Ryan Harvey goes on the DL.
Drew Rundle gets promoted to Daytona (why not move Wyatt back up?).
Blake Lalli gets promoted to Tennessee.
Marquez Smith gets promoted to Daytona.
Rebel Ridling, Luis Flores, and Jake Optiz get promoted to Peoria.

Josh Vitters was not promoted.

Good news

on the promotions. Lalli and Smith deserved it (and both are old for their level, so they needed to be promoted.) Ridling is fighting for playing time with Ryan Keedy and Opitz needs to replace Smith in Peoria.

I’m sure Bob Brenly was happy to see the Harden trade. Because Donaldson goes from Peoria to Kane County, Flores gets promoted and his son gets a lot more playing time in Boise.

Note that Donaldson is still going to get to play at Wrigley at the end of the month.

Yes he did.

He was 1 for 5 with an RBI.

What do we know of Josh Lansford?

Anything projectable or exciting?

You may place him in your crap bucket.

He has the reputation of having a good glove but little bat. He’s not been good defensively or offensively this season, despite being promoted to Tennessee awhile ago for an unknown reason (ala Jeff Samardzija). The Cubs seem to think of him as more of a prospect as most fans do, as they’ve put him in the Arizona Fall League following the 2006 season (despite him being one of the younger players there IIRC) and promoting him to AA this season when he probably didn’t deserve it.

No.

Lansford got promoted from Daytona (High A) to Tennessee (AA), and his numbers didn’t warrant any type of promotion. Lansford simply got promoted to fill a void at 3rd base.

In Daytona this year – Lansford line was: .249/.297/.309. Nothing to get excited about to say the least.

I haven't liked him

since seeing him play in Boise two summers ago.

I think if his last name was Johnson, no one would think he was a prospect at all. But legacy guys get the benefit of the doubt.

Shafer and Cashner

Second round pick Aaron Shafer has signed.

Andrew Cashner is supposed to be in Chicago today to take a physical. Assuming he passes, he’ll likely sign tomorrow and be in the booth with Len and Bob.

10 Top Draft Picks Now Signed

Cubs always seem to do a pretty good job at that each year – good to see everyone ready to go!

Paul Sullivan is reporting the deal is done for a $1.53M signing bonus – the Scout article was a couple days old.

Yeah

I’ve been out of commission this week.

The Cubs are pretty much done signing players now. They’ve got everyone they want and expect to get.

If Sonny Gray changes his mind about Vanderbilt, they might make an exception. But I don’t think they expected to sign him and they aren’t making a huge effort, as far as I can tell.

I meant to post a seperate diary on this

last night, but didn’t get the chance. They’re was a seperate diary up earlier this week - with the link that showed Cashner and the Cubs close to signing - showing that the deal was basically done. Didn’t want to be too redundant.

Cashner

My hope is that they keep him a relief pitcher. I have read enough things to suggest that his highest and best use is as a relief pitcher. And that it would be a mistake to try and convert him into starter material.

Does it ever hurt to give the guy innings as a starter

even if you intend to make him a reliever eventually?

Holliman and the Smokies

This was not a bad outing by Holliman standards this season. The 4 walks in 4 innings bothers me. He’s got enough ability to be a good AAA pitcher. He’s only at AA now. I don’t know if he’s major league material or not. It’s good to see the Smokies in first place in the SL North second half by 3 games over Huntsville.
