Well,
There are 14 teams who could give him a leatherless job…
I just don’t want to see him with the Cubs. Compared to him, Sori is a GGer.

Thinking out loud here (and avoiding work)...
(reposting from the previous thread since I posted it just before the overflow came up.)
I’m guessing that the reason the Cubs are carrying 13 pitchers and not calling up a position player is that Jim Hendry is trying to trade a pitcher (Wuertz, Lieber, Marshall, or Marquis) for a 4th OF before the ASB. I don’t think that Lou wants Pie back up, Hoffpauir duplicates Ward, Fuld can’t hit AA pitching, and Dubois and Kroeger are 4A players.

my guess is Marquis will be gone soon.
That is why Lou keeps talking him up as our 5th starter. Jason made it clear in the off season that he will not be happy in the bullpen. I think Hendry will try to make him happy if the Cubs can trade him for a need of the Cubs.

Ya but lets be realistic who would possibly want him for his contract

Floating an idea
What would you think of dealing Jason Marquis and Michael Wuertz to Detroit for Dontrelle Willis and a couple other players?
Dontrelle is on the DL with tendonitis in the knee, and was terribly wild earlier in the year (Rich Hill redux). He is a Jim Hendry favorite. He is owed over $20 M for 2009 and 2010 combined. Obviously, the other players from Detroit would have to be useful, but the salary for 2008 would be a wash, and maybe the Tigers would throw in half the 2010 payout. You would just hope Willis comes back next year as an option.
The Tigers have some useful relievers and shortstop prospects. Would the current ownership allow Hendry to take on future salary like that?

I think playing Marmol there
IS a good idea.

I agree.
He needs to work this out. And it has to be in games. Up 4 is as good of a time as any.

Dude, did you watch that last inning?
2 outs, but wound up loading the bases, and that wild pitch was UGLY. His control is not back.
If you’re right, hopefully he’ll be back after the All Star break, but I seem to remember all of this starting after a period of prolonged rest back in Tampa.

Then defend it on the merits
Not because Lou said so
Listen, we won, so I’m not raging pissed about this or anything. I just don’t see why we had to put Marmol out there when we have other options. You do not want your setup guy throwing 85 times a season. Those are LH-specialist numbers. For a setup guy, that’s insane
I'm pretty sure
I put why I thought this was a good idea.
That Lou thinks it’s the right thing IS a good reason.

If Marmol needs to stay sharp
why not bring him in when it’s a close game? Y’know, give him that closer/stopper mindset?

because
it’s too risky.
You put him into situations that are close, but not too close.

Look, I get why you're nervous about this

This is whats wrong with the bullpen right now, we will get huge leads
and someone will come in and pitch into more jams forcing us to use our better pitchers

So, are we in a pissing contest with the Brewers bullpen????

There is much rationalizing
and quiet discontent in the Bizarro BCB. It’s rather amusing. “tip your cap to Rusch” “we can still win the series” etc.

haven't they lost 2 of 3 to the Rox, so at best
they will get a split. 4 games series are tough, and the Rox were sky high after that crazy 18-17 game last weekend.

By the way,
the Foresters won today, 5-4. A guy who was leading the team in batting average (Theriot) but with only one extra-base hit (Theriot) came up with the bases loaded in the 8th, 2 outs, and launched a grand slam (not Theriot) to take the lead. Fun game to call! And as soon as they got the final out I checked the Cubs score on my phone, and it was already final. The best kind of day!
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Awesome!
Was that your first official call of a grand slam? Either way, totally fun!
Glad the Cubs pulled it out too. :)

Yep, first grand slam this season. I've called a couple or three in college. : )
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
So great!!!
Congrats! :D How’d you call it?
These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance"
Goetz is pronounced as if you took the y out of Gettysburg ... Getts.
“Here’s Ryan Goetz, who will bat with the bases loaded in the 8th, tie ballgame, 1-1. The first two batters of the inning were quickly retired but since then, a base hit by Eric Oliver and two straight walks have packed the bags for Santa Barbara. The 2-1 on the way, swung on, and hit deep to right field! Ashdown going back, back to the track, TO THE WALL, GONE! GRAND SLAM, RYAN GOETZ, AND THE FORESTERS OPEN UP A FIVE TO ONE LEAD! ....... (crowd noise) ..... Well, right after I get done saying that Goetz only has one extra-base hit and no homers all season long, he shows me up with a grand slam bomb deep to right field. Foresters take the lead for the first time in this game, and the batter is ….”
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Sidenote: As a tip of my cap to Pat Hughes, at the end of the game when I think the board operator I always say
“and thanks to (name) in the studio for a job well done!”
And occasionally I’ll send it to break with “back in a flash, on the Foresters Radio Network.” Just my way of saying thanks for all the years I’ve listened to Pat…
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
WELL DONE!!!
Seriously, that’s a great call of a grand slam!!! And I’m sure it was awesome. :D
