DFA: Who goes?
This has been discussed in many of the threads today, however, these threads are getting really L-O-N-G. We need a new one.
I have heard this discussed on the Score & ESPN 1000. The Harden/Gaudin trade puts the Cubs in a position to finally part with the headache named Marquis. With both Harden & Gaudin under control at a reasonable price, combined with the money saved on the four players sent in the deal to Oakland; the Cubs can afford to eat some, if not all of Marquis money owed for next year. Designating Marquis would clear a roster spot where we need it, would allow flexibility needed for the bullpen and bench, and rid the team of the headache known as Jason Marquis. Really, I see this as the only option. Keep in mind, that DFA'ing would not preclude the Cubs from trading him. We have plenty of insurance for the rotation; Lieber, Gaudin, Hart, and yes even Rich Hill. Let's discuss.

several options
the first is what you said.. marquis….dfa
another would be to send marshall down to iowa for more starts until a marquis dfa or other trade…
when eyre comes up makes it very interesting on who goes down… makes me wonder if we might be getting rid of lieber or wuertz….
Lieber I think is too valuable to let go.
Wuertz is out of options. Eyre could be DFA’d as well.

Gaudin is a younger Lieber....
....long relief, starter experience. I’d love to be able to keep Lieber, but it may be a numbers game.
I think we keep Eyre and try to trade Wuertz for a AAA outfielder who might help in September.

I don't think
this is an option Marquis has not been bad lately and I do not want to just eat Marquis’s contract. I think we should try and work out a deal so we only have to pay him half of his contract and maybe get something back in return. There has to be someoen willing to take Marquis at 6M for next yr. He is a decent starter No 3 on alot of teams that are trying to get to the playoffs.
Most likely destination: New York Yankees.

Marshall down
Unfortunate, but he has the options. Hendry knows that there are several teams looking for SP and Marquis might fit the bill. I said it before, I’ll say it again… Marquis and Wuertz for Maddux. Think about the impact the professor has had on Dempster… not a bad dude to have around as another unofficial player/coach on the bench. I agree with Al (and Sullivan – a first mind you!)... that it’s Hoff that comes up.
Anyone think they could go with a six man rotation until the Break and put Harden in Saturday’s game? It’d allow Demp to pitch in the All Star game (not important to me or the team, but a bonus for Demp)... just wondering…
I thought the whole reason
Gallagher was in the pen and available for the trade was because Marshall was going to take his starts.

We don't need either....
...but Marquis and Wuertz are WAY too much to give up for Maddux. If Maddux wants to come to help out in the stretch drive, I’m sure we could get him cheap.

i think marquis is worth keeping
he’s good [for a pitcher] at hitting and base running.
talk him into a spot on the bullpen, if that doesnt work, THEN you try trading him/DFA’ing him
Ramlee Zamfukusoridero
We've got plenty of hitters...
..and, really, you want to keep him because he’s a good BASE RUNNER?

See below.
Marquis is resistant to coaching. He has already made it known that he will not go to the bullpen. Marquis wants to be so fine with his pitches, he refuses to pitch to contact. If he can’t establish that he can consistently throw strikes & be ahead in the count, there really is no use for him. If someone else can be talked into taking some of his money on for next year- DFA’ing is an opportunity to just part ways with a guy who hasn’t worked out. I used to be a big Marquis fan, but I think he was ruined in STL when he was trotted out as a sacrificial lamb by LaRussa. Mentally, I don’t think he’s been the same since.

You absolutely hit the problem with marquis
he doesn’t have a strikeout pitch, but refuses to pitch to contact. I think it was brenly who recently said that if you’re not going to strike the guy out, you’re better off pitching to contact early than with a 3-2 count on everyone.
"Enough foreplay- let's get crackin'"- Fred Garvin
Exactly.
The problem is not his “stuff” Marquis can actually pitch quite well. The problem is that he is resistant to coaching & thinks he can do it his way. I have no more use for him. Financially, the Cubs can part with him, and not lose much monetarily, if they do it now. Depends on how “through” Lou is with Marquis, which I think he is probably almost totally through with him.

I don't think he agrees
to go into the pen. The Cards tried it and he pouted. Not interested in seeing a pain the butt emerge. Anythoughts on seeing six pitchers – see post above…
As of right now...
... 1:50 pm CDT, NO roster move has been made. The active roster on the Cubs website shows 23 names.

This is a good point
why do baseball teams wait til for the last minute to announce their roster moves. They and other teams know way before the public. Not really sure i understand this anyone?
What do you mean by "last minute"?
They make their moves at their convenience, not ours.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
They announce them
an hour before gametime when they know who has been up the whole day.
How do you know that?
And what difference does it make?

Besides the point but...
you mentioned the Cubs saved money on the 4 players they traded away. In getting Harden and Gaudin they should have added salary on right? Patterson and Gallagher were both 0-3 guys…I dont know about Murton…and Donaldson was in A ball. So we should have added salary. I dont see where you get the idea that the Cubs saved money on those 4 players…

I'm talking about future money.
Balanced against what we will pay for Harden & Gaudin next year.

Eating $15M to clear a roster spot
...just doesn’t seem like a very likely scenario to me.
Marshall being sent to AAA to stay stretched out and starting every 5 days makes a lot more sense, costs the Cubs nothing, and lets us keep an insurance policy should a starter get injured.
So would I
Its not just who you want in the pen. I would take Marshall over Wuertz, but the roster implications change the situation. Marshall has options. Sending him down and keeping Wuertz up means no one is DFA’d and the roster is set. I dont think keeping Marshall up is worth DFAing either Marquis or Wuertz. At least not yet.
Southpaw Reliever
With Eyre out, that leaves a hole for a second lefty reliever to go along with Cotts. I, too, prefer, Marshall to Wuertz.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
Wuertz can't go anywhere
Save for being traded. He would have to clear waivers to go to the minors, which would never happen.
Of all the pieces we could live without, Marshall is the only one who can be optioned.
You may be right.
I may be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic we’re looking for, (i.e. Cashman/NYY). Of course they would have to take on some of his money for next year, but they would probably do that. We don’t need Marquis for starter insurance. We have plenty of insurance.
Jimmyeatworld
The Yankees need pitching.
Cashman needs a face saver. We could even throw in someone we don’t need, like maybe Hoff.

Hoffpauir might actually hit well in Yankee Stadium...
... which is well suited for LH hitters. But the Yankees already have a ton of players just like him.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Would that hold true for the new Yankee Stadium, I wonder?
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
He'd probably hit even better in the New stadium.
It won’t be oddly shaped like Old Yankee Stadium. More symetrical.

Actually...
... the “odd shape” is what makes it such a good park for LH hitters. Being “more symmetrical” would probably make it less so.

I'm assuming that
there will be shorter porches in both left & right in the new Yankee stadium.

Um
Wilson Betemit can field several positions, some well. He also doesn’t have his numbers padded by spending half a decade in AAA. Betemit has legitimate power and once had good scouting reports. Given their current ML stats, he’s kind of like the anti-Hoffpauir.

Marquis
ure he comes in and dominates Cashman looks like a genius. OR he comes in (much more likely) and gets hit around like a wiffle ball and Cash loses his job.
Hoff was just an idea,
there are many others who the Cubs really don’t need. Marquis would probably do well in Yankee stadium. Keep in mind that in the AL, he really only has to go 5-6 innings & he could probably eat more.
