What position player comes up?
I dont see us going the rest of time until break with only 4 bench players.... who do we bring up to take murtons spot?? Soriano wont be ready until after the break...
hoff? fox?
we also need to get rid of a pitcher... as mentioned in another thread I dont think we dfa marquis right now, but the smarter move might be to move marshall back down to iowa. then after the all start break work something out with marquis.....

I think it's likely that Felix Pie
comes back. One, because of his speed; two, because of his versatility. If this indeed does happen, I hope he’s figured out how to hit ML pitching.

Doubt it...
...I don’t think you learn how to hit ML pitching in AAA.
You learn to hit ML pitching in the Major Leagues. I think I’d like to see him, especially defensively. But to think that he’s gonna come and hit his weight… that remains to be seen.

Felix can play all three outfield positions.
Besides that his speed is invaluable.

Any outfielder with a strong enough arm...
...can play all three positions, at least on an emergency basis.
I’m not saying that Adam Dunn would make an “acceptable” or “less than horrible” center fielder, but it still wouldn’t be half as bad as watching a mediocre third baseman trying to play shortstop.

Not any outfielder with a strong enough arm can play all three OF positions.
CF is the most demanding of all three positions. Any CF must have speed and the instinct to know how to take the best, most direct ball hit from the LCF gap to the RCF gap. I was talking about Felix’s versatility.

Depends how you look at that
CF needs the speed while RF needs the arm.

Sullivan’s a good guy. And I think he’s right. It’ll be Hoffpauir—and the recall will last five days, because Soriano should be ready after the break.

It's his articles
He seems to think the Cubs and the fans owe him. His writing suggests he thinks he’s bigger than the team. His “Ask Paul” columns are condescending. He seems like he hates writing about the Cubs.
Most fans only contact with him is his writing, and therefore, that is how he is judged.

Okay, he’s not a great outfielder. He can kind of, sort of, play in the outfield. He can also play first base. He’s been a better hitter than Pie.

Yeah, but here's the thing.
Right now the Cubs outfield consists of:
- Reed Johnson
- Jim Edmonds
- Kosuke Fukudome
Johnson and Edmonds are both not what you could call 100% healthy right now, and so I’d rather have an actual outfielder – preferably one that can play center – than a “kind of, sort of” outfielder.

But I don’t think it much matters. If the plan is to rest the hobbling Jim Edmonds, then slot Reed Johnson in center and play Mark DeRosa the rest of the week in left. We can live with Mike Fontenot at 2nd base for several days.

I don't think they
bring up Pie to sit bench. They should bring up Hoff though it gives us a left heavy bench and he is not that good of a fielder. I say Dubouis has a chance he his ripping the ball but not sure if the re is a spot on 40 Man roster for him though there should be since Patterson is gone. Also Brosurd could be an option he is a better fielder than Hoff

And I beleieve someone said before
that they don’t have to activate Harden til Friday so they don’t have to move a pitcher just this second and they can still get a hitter up here.
by oeosoto on Jul 9, 2008 12:41 PM CDT 0 recs
I really Like the idea
Of Hoff or Dubois if they feel they need a righty who can actually play OF Dubois is hitting .321 with 13 Hr’s in like a 100 less at bats then anyone else on the I-Cubs. He leads the team in Hr’s and is second on the team in hitting. Another possibilty though also not on 40 man roster could be Andres Torres he is more versitile in taht he can play all OF spots and is a switch hitter and could be a pinch hitter. He is running out of time to play in the bigs this could be his chance.
by oeosoto on Jul 9, 2008 12:47 PM CDT 0 recs
I think it's highly debatable whether...
...either Hoff or Dubois can “actually” play the outfield. I’d be pretty surprised if they brought up Dubois. Hoffpauir is a possibility, I suppose.
I guess it all comes down to whether Lou wants to emphasize offense or defense. If he wants DWaryle Jr., bring up the Hoffmeister. If he wants a late-inning defensive replacement for the Johnson/Jedmonds two-headed centerfield beast, get Felix back up here.

This is why I think Felix comes back. ED & RayJay both will need to be spelled in the outfield at times. Soriano will need to be replaced in late innings for defense also.

I agree...
it’s only for a week. Do any of these guys really need a rest until the All-Star break (except Edmonds)? Trot DeRo out there if needed. But if you just want a bat off the bench, bring up Hoff. You could bring up Pie for late inning replacement, but I’d rather he’d stay and work on that hitting if it’s only going to be for a week.

him striking out a lot and being a below average fielder. I rather bring up Pie and let him get a few starts while Johnson and Edmonds get a little breather, we face about 5 righties in a row including tonight.
