Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Wednesday 7/9, 7:05 CT
Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, Jul 9, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
Have you had Rich Harden fatigue today? Remember, he won't pitch for the Cubs till Friday at the earliest. In the meantime, there are other games to be won, including today.
If for some reason you haven't had enough Harden, Bruce Miles gives some insight on the Hendry/Beane relationship and how this deal got done.

Sometimes Johnny Cueto is good -- really good, as he was May 5 vs. the Cubs in Cincinnati, striking out eight in six innings. Other times he can't find the plate -- he walked eight Cardinals in five innings on June 11. He's allowed 19 home runs, but only one in his last four starts. So in summary, who the heck knows? Geovany Soto took him deep on May 5.
Z threw great in his return from the DL last Friday. He threw eight shutout innings against the Reds on May 6 in Cincinnati, and has a 0.82 ERA in his last three starts against them, all wins. Adam Dunn has taken him out of the park six times, but has only a .226 lifetime BA vs. Z.
Today's game is an all-cable extravaganza again in Chicago and Ohio and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

It's the end of an era on the South Side...
’’[Bleep] Jose Contreras,’’ Guillen said. ’’Nobody in this organization is more upset or sad than Ozzie Guillen. Nobody. If some of the players didn’t like the move, well, it’s easy to do. Just tell Ozuna to stay here and get them to get the [bleep] out of here and go to the minor leagues.’‘
All this because Pablo Ozuna has been DFA’d.

Ozzie's so insane - I love him
...in the right way of course. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Wait a minute... who am I here?
You can e mail him your love

That is his real e mail and he reads it.
I don’t know why but my favorite Ozzie outburst was in reaction to some criticism he received for
not going to the White House ceremony honoring the Sox WS because he had a previous
commitment in Venezuela . He said “people think I am sleeping with Hugo Chavez”

Ozzie was so proud to have become an American citizen
that he had to go back to Venezuela and hug up with Chavez the despot. That was a big snub for someone so proud? to be an American.

Any Pitch Limit on Big Z?
His pitch limit on Friday in St. Louis was 85-90. He ended up making 87 pitches. I saw that game in person. With this being only his second time out since the DL stint, will his pitch limit be 95-100?

i've liked marshall better than hill
for a long time. Hill has better “stuff”, but I think Sean’s a bigger “gamer”.
by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 9, 2008 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions
+1
Sean has proven a lot in each of his starts this year. He hasn’t blown anyone away but he hasn’t let anyone blow him away either. He’s resilient. And I don’t know what’s wrong w/ Hill but I don’t expect him back anytime soon. Pitching well at Rookie Ball is about a big a step as Dunn’s 2 1/4 inch groundout yesterday. But we’ll see, b/c I do hope he gets it together.
Go All In and Enjoy The Ride.
Hasn't the general consensus been
that Hill’s problem is between his ears and nothing mechanical? And that’s really unfortunate.

except
if the tweak was as small as reported, maybe it was mechanical, and the head-case part was from being “off” physically.

partially
his mechanics have been tweaked (something about shifting his front shoulder so he can keep his eye on the target better) but between his ears is still an issue… he comes off as a strange guy.

One time around?
There won’t be an off day till August 7th, so unless he uses a sixth starter, I don’t think he’ll change it until then.
''Listen, losing Soriano is no box of chocolates.'' ~Lou Piniella
WTF
Jessica said she thought Lou would change the order of the “rotation” after one time around (unless I misunderstood her, which is possible).
I pointed out that there won’t be an off day for quite awhile. Therefore, he couldn’t change the order after one time around without either pitching someone on short rest or using a sixth starter.
''Listen, losing Soriano is no box of chocolates.'' ~Lou Piniella
My reading...
...was that we’ll be alternating lefties and righties once we loop around to the top of the order again. I too could be wrong.
Yes I did mean that
Lou would normally place Lilly AFTER a righty but that happens automatically after
the first start.

OT: Sasha Baron Cohen at it again
for you caged wrestling fans:
Sasha Baron Cohen – best known by his TV and movie character "Borat" – was behind a ruse at a caged wrestling event in June at the Fort Smith Convention Center. For some, the event became so outrageous chairs and beer went airborne. All because two of the performers – both men – ended up tearing each other’s clothes off and doing a tongue-wrestle rather than the slam downs you normally see at a wrestling event.
This from an industry e-letter I receive weekly.

This is going to sound crazy
We’re going to a wedding in Austraia. We have to be there. Husband is a groomsman,
We’re only committing to being there for 4 days because of when the wedding is. The 3 days before and the wedding and will fly out the next morning.
We’d miss most of the NLCS but the next day would be the day before the world series begins.
Of course I am the same person whoi spent 75 bucks to change a ticket to be at the game where Nomar arrived and Maddux went after 300.

Big Z tonight, hopefully this Harden thing and the health being restored will continue a winning streak for a while, then I will have that face

Did I hear that right?
On CSN they said that Harden might not pitch for 2 weeks?

against the Giants?

I thought about Friday too
I heard today though that his last couple starts have been shaky, maybe we jumped the gun on him while he is still injured… I sure hope not

they mentioned they have the flexibility, want to rest him....
.....and I guess this means we don’t have to make a roster move until he pitches.

yea good point
I am really happy we got Gaudin though too, Just in case harden gets hurt or needs a resting period Gaudin has shown the MLB he can make a living starting as well as relief

uni numbers
i’m sure harden will get #40 (from rothschild).
what will rothschild go to? all the other 40’s are taken.
40: dick harden
41: lou (14 backwards)
42: retired, jackie robinson
43: wuertz
44: chad fox
45: we are marshall
46: dempster
47: eyre
48: cotts
49: marmol
now is "dick" harden
really necessary, haha

Well, ya'll
Gotta go get some grub, go home & feed “the girls.” I’ll see ya here tomorrow after another Cubs win.
Jimmyeatworld
if harden takes marquis's spot on friday,
then he pitches against matt cain, whom harden beat when he was still an A just a few weeks back.
Rothschild says Z's not on a strict pitch count
but they won’t “be stupid about it” and will just keep an eye on how he is and where he is.
Harden will get plenty of rest and Rothschild says he needs to see exactly where he is/what he has etc. And figure out over the next few days.
Gaudin will go into the pen and help play set-up/middle relief.
Nothing earthshattering from the radio pregame.

I hope Harden
can make his debut @ Wrigley on Saturday. But if he doesn’t feel 100% then it doesn’t make sense to just pitch him. Just wait until after the All-Star break.
I love that we have Harden but if you rewind 4 years ago and change the name Harden to Prior—it feels the same exact way. I hope he can stay healthy.

Tamia London Davis: Due date (8-11-08)!
According to Lou...
Lilly, Z, Dempster first series after the ASG….then Harden at Arizona, Monday. I didn’t hear who the 5th guy was (Marquis or Marshall)
Nobody cares about your fantasy league team
It should be
Harden, Marquis and Lilly @ Arizona.

Alfonso Soriano
won’t play in the All-Star game.
Kind of obvious. Not sure if this was posted anywhere.
