Will Marquis Rise Up?

Read an interesting quote from Rich Harden today on ESPN.com:

"You kind of feed off each other. You see every starter going out there and doing really well, and you want to match them," Harden said. "I think it is contagious. ... It's a pretty amazing staff here."

So with the other four starters dominating the Brewers earlier this week, will Jason Marquis answer the bell and "match them"?

HIs post-AS game starts would indicate that he is going into his traditional second half slump.  If he continues to slide, Piniella will have to consider removing him from the rotation.

Today's start against the Pirates - now without Jason Bay - should allow Marquis to improve his numbers, but for the longer term, will he be able to put together a string of quality outings over the next two months?  Will he, as Harden said, "feed off" the success of the other starters?

It's all up to him, but history tells us he's not going to be up to the challenge.

Marquis just needs to go 6 or 7 strong innings

3 or 4 runs over that span should keep us in the game. Now if he doesn’t dumb stuff like give up a homer right after the offense just tied the game at 5, then he will still be Jason Marquis.

TWO post all star game starts?

7/22 At AZ, 5IP, 3 runs allowed (hardly a meltdown) but not a top of the rotation start.
7/27 FL 6 IP 6 Runs allowed in a blow out win.

Now I am one who has not been enamored by Marquis or what he represents but he is probably one of the stronger 5th starters in all of MLB, period. Marshall is a 4-inning pitcher, Samardzija is in the bullpen and maybe when Wood returns and after mid-August when Piniella & Co has the chance to skip a start or two. That of course is only done if there is cause.

I suspect that Marquis will pitch two less than spectacular and grinding type games where the game will be in doubt in the middle innings.

And in those two starts...............

..............Marquis took a loss and a no-decision.

If the race gets close it doesn’t look like he can be counted upon, a situation not unlike his previous 3-4 seasons.

Well, did ANYONE really think he'd make a postseason roster?

I don’t think Jason (in his heart of hearts) thinks he would.

He’s a #5 starter. We’re up 4 games. Let’s worry about skipping his starts the last week of the season…not now.

For what it’s worth, we’re 11-8 when he pitches. He’s not the travesty we’re making him out to be…he’s not very good, sure. But he’s a decent #5 starter.

Jason Marquis is who we thought he is. Let him off the hook, Cubs fans.

I actually agree with this.

Marquis hasn’t been terrible.

If anything, he’s been consistently giving up 3-5 runs a game.

At least we know what we’re getting and will avoid a 10 ER outing or something like that.

I hope so

After the past four starts, averaging 7IP per GS, he needs to turn it up a notch.

I just hope there isn’t any letdown after this big series, coming home and taking the Bucs for granted.

Yesterday’s game was awesome, and made dealing with the drive that more enjoyable.

Cubs are 11-8 (.578) in games started by Marquis

and 55-36 (.617) in games started by others.

Marquis'...

...track record is too established for me to have a lot of faith in him changing much.

Because the Cubs are pretty strong 1-4, you can live with Marquis, and in today’s world of parity, he is ok for a 5th starter.

looking at the opposition pitcher who has a 2.47 WHIP

and recently acquired from the NYY who needed pitching, a 26 year old RHP…I think Cubs will continue with their building of their league leading run differential.

let him go 7 innings

with 3 er, and I’ll be fine. Heck, 6 innings; give Gaudin, the Shark and Marmol some work.

Marquis Job

is pretty much to eat up innings.

Marquis is the 5th starter

He’s fine there. Yes he is overpaid and he probably won’t get a post-season start. He is what he is and I don’t understand the constant bashing. No he’s not going to get better because of the other pitchers. I’m sure he would love to but he doesn’t have ability of the other pitchers. The Cubs could do a lot worse for a 5th starter.

Personally, if he goes 6 to 7 innings and gives up 5 runs today, that’s ok. He just needs to eat innings.

by rlpete on Aug 1, 2008 11:03 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed....quite a few teams would like to have a 5th starter like Marquis

...maybe not for the money, but he shows up every 5 days, gives you 6 or 7 innings and that is all you can really ask from your 5th guy.

As for the question, yes I think he will step up today. Its a perfect scenario, he is at home agasint the Pirates and they are riding a wave of momentum..

Actually, he might get better just by being around a higher quality staff,

if that makes any sense. Like pitchers who say that watching Maddux pitch helps them to learn things. Marquis might just pitch better because there should be less pressure on him and he might pitch smarter. He always seems to be easily rattled by bad breaks or errors which leads to a melt down. Maybe he can learn from the others to keep a cool head and stick to a game plan.

I agree that he’s fine as a #5 starter. He’s had several good games recently where he was unlucky with no run support or matching against the opponent’s ace.

Here is an interesting question...

...if the Cubs started a 5 game playoff series tomorrow, who would your top 3 starters be for that series?

I know I am getting ahead of things a bit, but it would be interesting to see what Lou would do in that circumstance.

No doubt

Z, Harden, Demp. All three have performed at an all-star level this year. I don’t care if they’re all righties.

I can't believe I'm saying this, (or even thinking it), but...

Marquis has been up & down all year. At the beginning of the year in spring training, I admired his working out over the off-season, and could see that he was determined to be better. I had high hopes. Now, as many of you know, I am a Marquis critic, but I don’t hate him. Of course I don’t want him to do poorly, he’s a player on my favorite team of all-time. As he has struggled, I’ve become more critical of him. To be honest, up until the last few days, I didn’t hold out much hope of him pitching well the rest of the year.

He seems to have been pitching well lately. I understand his lines or record don’t belie this. What I have seen, as far as him being mindful of getting ahead in the count, pitching to contact & trying to keep the ball down has impressed me.

So, do I think he will rise up today, and subsequently rise to the occasion & put together a string of quality outings over the last two months of the regular season? The quote by Harden tells me one thing; if he is saying that in the media, it is what the team, (and more specifically the rotation), are thinking. To a competitive guy, (quiet though it is), like Marquis, I think this goes a long way. Baseball is a mental game, and I think mentally that Marquis will feed off this. It has never been a problem with Marquis’ ‘stuff’, it’s always been about his mental game, about his execution.

I can’t believe I’m saying this… Will Marquis rise to the occasion as we wind up the regular season?

I think he will.

The much maligned Marquis has delivered on expectations

I’ve never been a fan of Jason Marquis. But honesty prevails me to say he has done an OK job for the role he is here to serve in 2008.

by MDBNIU on Aug 1, 2008 1:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We do agree here

I still think a lot of the flak Marquis catches is because of the salary but that’s not his fault. If he was a $2 Mil type guy putting up his numbers in the 5th spot then I think people would be much more favorable to him.

I still think the Cubs are a better team right now with Marquis in the #5 spot and Marshall in the pen as long man. If Marquis was gone then what? Marshall to the rotation and call up Hart for long man? He hasn’t done it this year.

Why "NOPE"?

Marquis pitched fine today. Wasn’t his fault that the Cubs got shut out.

depends on what you mean by "fine"

he gave up three runs in six innings against a team that just traded away two of their top hitters. i think people are being a little generous about marquis’s outing today. sure, even if he’d completed the game and given up one run, we would’ve lost, but let’s be careful not to give Marquis more credit than he earned. we’re already giving him more money than he earns – let’s not compound this by giving him more credit.

by horace tarbox on Aug 1, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You sir, have a rather pronounced lack of knowledge about the game of ML baseball...

Marquis had a fine outing because he gave up only three runs, on eight hits, with only one walk to an opposing ML team. Every team is composed of ML hitters, and those hitters are there, in the line-up, because they have proven they can play ML baseball. It does not matter that Bay or Nady were not in the line-up. Marquis’ line today would keep any ML team in the game, with a chance to win. It was a quality start, defined as pitching 6 or more innings, allowing three runs or less. Simple as that.

Today was a result of simply a lack of offense, likely due to never seeing Karstens before, and having a last minute scouting report on him. It’s pretty hard to have a good scouting report on a guy who you really had no idea you would be facing until yesterday.

In fact, Marquis pitched well enough to allow the Cubs a chance to win today’s game. He pitched to contact, (which Marquis needs to do to be effective), he struggled to stay ahead in the count, but he kept the ball down for the most part, (allowing only one HR).

You negated your own point by admitting that, “sure, even if he’d completed the game and given up one run, we would’ve lost.”

Let's be honest here.

The Pirates threw a dog line-up on the field. They have no choice, but just because players are on a ML roster it doesn’t mean they are “good”, especially in relation to the team sitting in the opposing dugout.

That said, the Cubs’ offense flat out didn’t deliver. You can’t win if you don’t score.

And yes, Marquis pitched well enough to win. If he continues in this fashion for the balance of the season, he’ll be an asset as the #5. But keeping in mind this was a very weak line-up, one must wonder how he will do against the Astros next week.

He should follow that outing by facing the decimated Braves on the road, then back home against the Reds. The Pirates in Pittsburgh rounds out his August schedule, which, to me, looks like a cupcake situation.

IMO

“quality start” is a bunk term. It is based on the minimum amount of “suck” and doesn’t appear to take into consideration the way one pitches. Can’t rememebr the specifics now but IIRC, he threw a lot of pitches, wasn’t “on” the way he is occasionally, and all in all, barely kept his team in it.

IMO, if you are to keep your team “in it”, they ought to have a chance based on their production. The offense was weak but Marquis is just not what i want as a astarter. That’s all.

Calm down.

depends on what you mean by "rise up"

isn’t Marquis going to make somewhere around 10 million dollars next year? you shouldn’t have to pay your #5 starter 10 million dollars.

by horace tarbox on Aug 1, 2008 4:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As usual with the Marquis haters

it comes down to the salary. It always does.

Marquis is a #5 type starter. He’s better than many #5 starters. He never gets hurt. Only once this seasojn has he not made it through 5 innings.

The fact that he is overpaid is not his fault. Was he supposed to turn down the Hendry offer?

by rlpete on Aug 2, 2008 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

jason

if the cubs got 5 runs then marquis would have pitched a good game.this guy,s very iffy but a good 5th man 500 type pitcher.is it good enough for the cubs though???
