Obviously we root for the Cubs... but who else in the NL?
The Cubs currently have the best record in the NL, and as such, they'd end up facing the team with the worst record to make the playoffs, unless its a team from their own division. It seems like the Cards or Brewers, if they win the Wild Card, will have a better record than the winner of the West.
So... Which team in the West would you rather face in October if you were a fan of the team in the NL with the best record (I suppose I just assume that the Cubs will continue at their current pace)?

I say Dodgers
The D-Backs have too much pitching and now a certified Cub-wounder (I hesitate to say “-killer”) in Adam Dunn. Plus no D-Backs means less hand-wringing about last year’s postseason during the broadcasts.

My own opinion
I’d personally rather see the Dodgers. I’m not sold on their pitching and it seems like Saito (currently on the DL) was one of the Dodgers that hurt the Cubs the most.
Manny? Yes, he’s good, and I think he’s a LOCK for the HOF, but who else on their roster is scary? Matt Kemp, Jeff Kent, Russell Martin, Juan Pierre? Not scary. Compare those guys to Mark Reynolds (20+ HR), Adam Dunn, Justin Upton, Stephen Drew, Chad Tracy, etc, and its pretty obvious that the DBacks are the better hitters.
Kuroda, Penny, etc, arent all that scary compared to Haren, Webb, and Johnson.
From here on out, I suppose I root for the Dodgers in addition to the Cubs.

Will Manny Get the IBB Treatment
as does Pujols and did Bonds?
"Sometimes I feel like as a Cubs fan if I’m not worrying about something, I’m not doing it right." - HalfBlindCubbieGirl
I suppose that all depends...
Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of walking someone intentionally unless…
1.) With two outs It sets up an easier out for the defense. (Ex: Runner at 2nd or 2nd and 3rd)
2.) If it sets up the double play if there is only 1 out. (Ex: Runner at 2nd)
3.) If its a top 5 slugger, in a tight game (up 2 or less after the 7th inning) with 2 outs.
I’d NEVER give an IBB to a slugger, regardless of who they are, unless it falls into one of those three categories. That being said, I think Manny is good enough to fit the ‘top 5 slugger’ description above, and I’d give him a free pass in situation #3.

Dodgers
Just because the Cubs seemed to handle the Dodgers pretty well earlier in the year, and yes I know they didn’t have Manny. Those 90’s expansion teams (Marlins, D’backs) seem to give us fits, especially when we play in Phoenix.
Don't underrate Andre Ethier
But I’d rather face the Dodgers. Bank Holding Company Park hasn’t been friendly to the Cubs since Day 1.
The Dodgers pitching is suspect. if you don’t think that line up isn’t adequate, you just haven’t seen that team enough. They have more than enough punch to win a weak division. Russell Martin’s a stud. Kent is a very good young hitter. It is not obvious the D-Backs have a stronger line-up. Right now, Manny has energized that entire team. But—that pitching isn’t good enough to win in the playoffs. I’d rather see the Cubs attack that staff. Jonathan Broxton is an adequate closer in Saito’s absence.
The D-Backs are still floundering, but I’m scared of their pitching. That, alone could keep them afloat in a short series.

i assume you meant Kemp
when you referred to the ‘good young hitter’, but i do the same thing all the time when talking baseball.
Bring on the Dodgers
Webb and Randy Johnson have proven in the playoffs that they can shut down anybody, and Haren’s just a damn good pitcher anyways. Plus (Adam Dunn aside) they play much better defense than the Dodgers.
all in all, i’d have to think the Cubs match up better with the Dodgers anyway because of their shakey bullpen and fairly fragile starting pitchers. that’s the kind of teams the Cubs have feasted on all year.
also, quick question about the seeding : is the WC team automatically seeded fourth, or is it based of over-all record?
Im fairly certain
that the Wild Card team is always 4th… If I recall correctly, the rules are as follows…
The #1 team will face the lowest seeded team that is NOT a member of the same division. That #1 team will get homefield throughout the entire league playoffs.
The #2 team then faces the remaining opponent, and is given homefield advantage over that opponent.
The Wildcard, regardless of record, is always considered #4.
The best example of how this system works came in 2003, when the Cubs won the Central, the Braves won the East, and the Giants won the West. With 101 wins, the Braves had more than any other NL team and were rewarded with playing the playoff team with the fewest wins, the Cubs, despite the fact that the Wild Card team that year was the Florida Marlins. The Marlins, on the other hand, had 91 wins and as a result had a better record than the Cubs. As we all know, the Marlins and Cubs squared off in the NLCS, and the Cubs were given homefield advantage despite having a worse record than the Marlins.
Odd how it all works out at times, but it seems to make sense to me.

Right, but...
... you can’t face a team in your own division in the first round, which means that if the Cubs have the best record, they can’t play the 4th-seeded wild card if it’s the Brewers or Cardinals. They would then play the division winner with the worst record, which is likely to be the West winner.

Which is why
Had the Met’s NOT collapsed we might have played an East Coast team last year?
All the playoff teams last year...
... had virtually identical records, within five games of each other. So yes, we might have.

I vote that we just vote for the Cubs and don't worry about the other stuff

I’d rather the Cubs face the Dodgers, but I’d rather the Cubs beat the Diamondbacks, if you know what I mean. Payback for last year. Sweep them! Let every game be a laugher, with the 3rd one being a no-hitter.
Diamondbacks are the last team we want to face...
Brandon Webb, Danny Haren, Randy Johnson….plus Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon in that bullpen. The thought causes cold sweats.
It's not just that...
... I think the Cubs’ pitching matches up pretty well with those you mention.
It’s that ballpark. The Cubs have had a tremendous problem winning there, even in years when they were good and AZ was bad.
I’m rooting for LA.

I understand why most of you prefer
to face the Dodgers but for me that would be the ultimate horror if we lost to them. Having grown up in L.A. from the age of 7 to 33, I had to put up with many Dodger fans and this would make my life just miserable if we were to lose. Beating them would be fantastic just like when the Bulls knocked off the Lakers but the agony of going through that series would just wear me out. I think we can beat the Diamondbacks so I would prefer to see the Cubs face them instead of the Dodgers.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson
We have never beaten the D'Backs...
Everytime it’s the same old story…the Cubs are the “superior team on paper” in the series, yet everytime the D’Backs crush our testicles. Under no circumstances do I want to face the D’Backs.
We beat them this year
3 game series sweep…. You act as if we’ve played a dozen post season series with them. They had our number last year. Cubs and DBacks are two entirely different teams this year.
If the Cubs can be patient and play like they have most of the year I don’t think it matters who we face because we’re going to be odds on favorite.
Look up Cubbie history against the D'Backs the past several years
It is ugly tale, especially in Phoenix. Under NO circumstances do I want to see the Cubs face the D’Backs in the postseason. Last season everybody presumed the Cubs would crush the inferior D’Backs. Well look what happened.
I assure you all....there is no need to worry....the Chicago Cubs cannot possibly ever defeat us!

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Well professor I guess that explains then why 81% of the vote opts for playing the Dodgers
You can play the D’ Backs all you want.
Look at the 2 games we lost to them this year (yes at the BOB)...
Soriano wasn’t in the lineup….we’re 4-0 against them when he is playing….and if we did face them in the playoffs…we would play the first 2 games in Wrigley.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

so
we’re going for a mob-mentality here?
Frankly, I’d rather play the Dodgers because I think they deserve it more, and I’d like to see what our pitching can do to Manny.

Hard to say really....
how many times would you enjoy beating the cardinals and brewers? And we’ve pretty much done the same thing to the Dodgers this year as we’ve done to the Diamondbacks….a sweep at home…but split the 4 game series in LA (lost 2 out of 3 in Zona).
2008 5-2 vs. LA 4-2 vs. ARI Since 2000 28-31 vs. LA 25-36 vs. ARI
Losing record against both of them…but again, that is neither here nor there, this team is NOT the 2000, 2001, 2002, etc. Cubs.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

that I don’t enjoy beating the White Sox anymore? I mean, get it over with, and move on, you know?

The sweep was at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs lost 2 of 3 in Phoenix. They are 16-27 in Phoenix all-time, including the playoff losses last year.
Odds on favorite means nothing in the postseason. I’d much rather play LA.

and Oceania has always been at war with East Eurasia.
We swept them in Wrigley THIS YEAR. No testicles crushed.

Don't Count Out Facing the East
Are we sure that we won’t end up facing a team from the East. I mean the Wild Card is still pretty wide open. Mets or Phillies could overtake the brewers or Cards

heh, i almost hope we do
Philly with no starting pitching, NY with no bullpen…. sounds like a good matchup to me!
Does it really matter
we are gonna whoop all comers this post season.
No NL West team will go any where this post season. Heck they will be lucky to have a team finish above .500. The real threat is in the east. The east is playing tough the last month or so.

By birth, I'm a citizen of Cubs' nation.
By later moves, I’m a naturalized citizen of Braves’ nation and Rockies’ nation.
Since neither the Braves or Rockies are going to the playoffs this year, I’m staking everything on the Cubs, and I don’t really care who they play.

I swear..
It is indoor stadiums with the roofs closed that give our team fits this year. We did great against the Brew-crew when they had their roof open. When we went to play the Astros and D-Backs with the roofs closed… our guys can’t see the ball. Tampa Bay and Toronto are other examples. The day that Toronto had the roof open for awhile we did fine.
Derek absolutely can’t see the thing when he is playing indoors. Maybe he needs to get the yellow-tint glasses that the Olympic shooters use? The young guys, and for some unexplained reason, Edmonds do fine. Maybe if we end up playing the D-backs in October we can insist that they open the roof? :) Milwaukee too!!!

Cubs won two of three in Toronto.
So it must have been OK there.

Roof Roof
The roof was open in Toronto for at least one of those games.
OK – I went back to look. Here is what the ‘08 Cubs have done in the ‘domes.
Houston 5/12-14 … 1 W 2 L
Toronto 6/13-15 … 2 W 1 L (open for part of one game)
Tampa Bay 6/17-19 … 3 L (dimmest light in a MLB park)
Houston 7/18-20 … 1 W 2 L
Arizona 7/21-23 … 1 W 2 L
Milwaukee 7/28-31 … 4 W (open every day as far as I remember)
What I can figure is that with the roof closed the record is 4 Wins 10 Losses
For all stadiums with roofs open (Milwaukee all four games + Toronto for part of the game) – 9 Wins 10 Losses
I want my Macias!
Good research.
Thanks for this. These ballparks DO play differently when the roof is closed.
