Tonight's game has been postponed. There will be a split doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday; first game at noon CT; second game at 6 pm CT.

Will leave this up for discussion tonight, or if you want to talk about the Cardinals/Marlins game or the Brewers/Padres game.

Really bummed

I really look forward to the games on WGN since I don’t get to see them otherwise. Guess I will have to settle for gameday tomorrow at work and not get any work done.

Double headers suck

How often do teams win both ends? I’d love to see the stats on that, but I bet it’s very rare.

At least Harden gets an extra day’s rest.

by Canadian Cubs Fan on Aug 12, 2008 6:26 PM CDT reply actions

Must be why I saw Marquis going in game 1 tomorrow

Now we’ve got 6 games in the next 5 days, so we either need one of tomorrow’s starters to go on 3 days rest, or use Marshall. Obviously Harden won’t pitch on short rest.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 12, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

The Elias Sports Bureau found that double headers are swept only 48.9% of the time

I was reading about doubleheaders earlier today after a discussion in another thread and ran across that tidbit of info.

"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."

That's about what you'd expect, right?

About half of them are sweeps and half of them split?

It’s felt like eternity with a day off yesterday and a night game tonight but with the rain delay I guess I’ll just have to suck it up. We gotta take advantage of this brave’s team that had been playing poorly and has already dumped some of it’s core players. 3 out of 4 is a must. Now let’s do it Padres!!

Question: Cubs should

a) Make one more key move by going after _ (name available player)

b) Hang on with what they’ve got until Sept. 1 and 40 man roster

c) Only make a deal for somebody if lead in divison goes to 1 game or less before Sept, 1

d) Other (specify)

Of the ones you mention....

... you won’t see Dubois, I don’t think—he’s not on the 40-man roster and not likely to be added. Pignatiello, probably not either. If pitchers are added other than Hart and/or Wuertz, it’ll be Jon Lieber and/or Chad Fox returning from the DL.

But I agree that Pie, Hoffpauir and Hill are headed to Chicago on Sept. 1. Or whenever the PCL playoffs are over.

Iowa and Chicago-Long Relationship

Iowa and the Chicago Cubs have had a relationship since 1981. A lot of I-Cubs fans are also Chicago Cubs fans. That’s important because the I-Cubs and their fans won’t have their feathers ruffled if Chicago calls up players before the PCL playoffs. The I-Cubs faithful would be happy to see their former players help Chicago in the stretch run starting Sept. 1.

If fans of a AAA team don’t really care about the parent club, then the fans care more about keeping the AAA players for the duration of the playoffs. They would rather see the AAA team win a championship than the parent club. That’s not the case with the I-Cubs.

It’s only 2 1/2 weeks till Sept. 1. The reinforcements will help. There’s not much help out there from other teams right now.

or does it seem like everyone’s loading up to go against the Cubs?

D-Backs get Dunn, who becomes Superman in Wrigley..

It's been a while

I am out for trip mostly in August for both business and watching high school baseball these days, and could not afford to check back how Cubs playing recently….

Urasho from Okinawa in Summer High school tournament at Koshien Stadium (US’s Final Four equivalent) plays well as they win first 2 matches strongly and now facing Tokyo’s contender tomorrow. I’ve attended the 2nd match against Chiba and you can feel the heat on those flickr photos and YouTube Footages (There are 4 movies I took for this game).

DSC_3406

I know Dome is officially in slump again in August – I don’t believe what Destrade says (I know this guy well) and I don’t think the reason is more practical and technical stuff than such generally observed ones from outsiders, but anyway I hope Dome is back asap.
Dome wrote a long diary on Aug 4th on his website, and I don’t have enough time to translate them all at this moment, but looks like he is still optimistic and positive on anything.

Looking forward Cubs and Dome play better in rest of the season and red-hot October.

I'm bleeding Dragons Blue.

by dragonsfanatic on Aug 12, 2008 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

I think Dome will be okay..

The pitchers made their adjustments to his early season run, and now Kosuke has to figure out the counter-adjustments to get back on track at the plate. But he’s had too much success in Japan, and he’s too good of a fundamental player to think that he won’t be able to figure things out. I don’t care about the power so long as he can get back to working the counts into his favor.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Aug 12, 2008 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Dome's problems are solved!!!

I know why he’s been slumping. Before tonight, dragonsfanatic’s last post was in the game thread on July 31, the last game in Milwaukee (Dome homered in that game).

Since then Dome is 3-for-28.

Welcome back, dragonsfanatic! Don’t stop posting, because Dome hits when you’re here!

Dome is a professional tool .. he'll get it together ..

His history clearly shows the man is a great ball player. It will be in steps .. beginning with, as the Mayor and others have said, getting back to where he was sooo solid at the first of the year, and that was in a far more patient AB then he’s had.

Lately, he’s hacked away more like a member of the Cubs during the last year of Dustyball, but I’m convinced he’s too professional a guy to handle this. A couple days off with some game videos, I think, will help him see what’s going on here. Being the kind of hitter he is, he’s got to do something ASAP ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

No, I don't think it's a big deal...

...it’s just that Edmonds is ONE OF US now. No point on trying to make him look bad unless there’s evidence of stating such claims as him trying to fail on purpose.

Hardly damning evidence

And certainly does nothing to promote signing Sheffield

by Shanghai Badger on Aug 12, 2008 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

It simply proves that there are rumours about every player

And just because there are rumours does not make them true or that they would not help the Cubs. Sheffield has won more and been in more big games that most players on the Cubs. To dismiss his abilities based on an alleged reputation and rumour would be a kin to those who said we should not sign Edmonds because of the same.

by JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE on Aug 12, 2008 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

ALLEGED REPUTATION??!?

There is DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE that he made errors on purpose!!!!!

There is documented evidence that his contract stated he’d DH, and now he’s complaining!

He thinks platooning means not playing each and every day.

There is documented evidence of him bitching about every place he’d ever left.

Those aren’t rumors!

by Shanghai Badger on Aug 12, 2008 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I have no idea what we are discussing anymore. Sheff is over the hill, he’s a cancer, and we don’t need him. End.

You guys are right

but I think about our lineup in a WS (knock on wood) and do not see how we can possibly match up when required to play a DH. I guess I just want to play fantasy baseball and have a better line up on paper.

by JEROMEWALTON'SBATTINGSTANCE on Aug 12, 2008 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Trouble is, the games aren't played on paper

And it’s not worth carrying a cancer that could put making the playoffs a risk for what would be a maximum 4 games of usefulness.

by dtpollitt on Aug 12, 2008 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you read Badgers link?

IMHO Sheffield admitting to errors that would be enough to take away any advantage having him as a DH for a max of 4 games in the WS

"We've had our ups and downs, but as long as you have a reason, something to fall back on and a plan, that's all there is to it," Soto said.

by Madison Cub Fan on Aug 12, 2008 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think your point about the DH is somewhat fair

but here’s my argument to refute that.

Our run differential is +139. The next closest is Boston at +114. AL has home field advantage, which means 4 games with the DH given a 7 game series. And who would we put in that DH role? Luckily, we have a handful of players we have been platooning that can fit that role – Reed if it’s a LHP, and a handful of other hitters like Fontenot, DeRosa depending on the lineup, and a few guys in the minors that have power. I mean, hell, Micah hit FOUR home runs in his first four ABs down in Iowa the other night.

Now, what about those other three games at Wrigley? Without a doubt we have the best hitting pitchers – Zambrano, Marquis, even Dempster can do it. And you have to assume whoever the AL team is will not have pitchers that do much of anything in the batter’s box.

With our offense, which this year is clearly one in which every damn player contributes, I’m truly less worried about the DH in the World Series, given both our team-oriented approach to hitting this year, and our superior hitting pitchers.
