Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Tuesday 8/12, 6:10 CT
Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves, Aug 12, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
There will be a pregame ceremony tonight honoring longtime Braves broadcaster Skip Caray, who died last week. From Yahoo, here's a column on Skip's funeral yesterday. Skip Caray was an acquired taste -- not everyone liked his style -- but I always enjoyed his dry sense of humor and how he could make games involving the horrid Braves of the 1980's interesting. His call of the Braves' 9th inning win in the 1992 NLCS over the Pirates is a broadcasting classic.
That is, the ceremony and the game will be held, weather permitting. This weather forecast and radar for the Atlanta area doesn't look very encouraging.

Charlie Morton will be making his 11th major league start tonight, and first vs. the Cubs. Most of the previous ten have been pretty bad, but five days ago threw seven shutout innings vs. Arizona, the best outing of his career. It appears from his gamelogs that if you can wait him out, you'll draw walks and score often. Sounds like a plan for the Cubs tonight.
Rich Harden faced the Braves in interleague play on May 17 in Atlanta and got a win. He allowed four hits in seven innings, all singles, walked one and struck out eight. One of those hits was by Mark Teixeira, who's no longer on the team. Casey Kotchman, who was acquired for Teixeira, is 3-for-12 (all singles) vs. Harden (from Kotchman's days with the Angels while Harden was in the AL).
Today's game is on cable in Atlanta and on WGN, so it should be available to just about everyone. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Both teams are off September 8
And the Braves will be in the middle of a homestand.
Not ideal, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that. Would make for a long road trip for the Cubs, though—3 in Cincy, 1 in Atlanta, 3 in St. Louis and one in Houston.
Also both off September 15.

I don't think they would schedule it for an off day
Scheduling for an off day like would cost more money. Airplane tickets, hotels, etc… They are already thier now so I think it would be easier to do a DH tomorrow or Thursday.

Let's hope they get it in tonight.

Be nice for them not to play a DH or
have to throw away an off day down the stretch.

It would also bring in more revenue than a traditional DH
They could do a day/night DH, though.

With the rain just getting to Atlanta, it appears to have hours to go to clear out. Just clear in Jackson, MS and it was raining there all day. Hope Harden is the type that can mentally prepare to start today and be just as ready tomorrow.
Sorry folks, parks closed. Moose out front should have told you.

I disagree
Yes there is a large area of rain but I don’t think it will be an all night thing… they may be starting at 9pm but there will probably be baseball today… IMO
But then again im not a weather man so dont scold me if it rains until tomorrow
Because of the stakes here...
... they’ll probably wait a LONG time before calling it. There’s a night game tomorrow so as you say, they could easily start at 9 pm or even later.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I don't think the rain will be out of there by even 9pm or 10pm
but I agree with your thought.
If they know they’ll have clear skies after 9:30pm or so, they can play till 1am, get back to the hotel by 3am, sleep till noon, and still get to the park by 2pm tomorrow, 4 hours before game time.
That said, I don’t relish having to stay up until 1am to see Woody close it out.

Sorry folks, parks closed. Moose out front should have told you.
By my back of the envelope meteorology
It’s going to be 8+ hours from now before the rain clears.
Anyone know how it works for pitchers on days like this? WIll Harden even pick up a ball? Will he warmup in the underground area? Will he wait to begin any warmup until 2-3 hours before the game would potentially start?
More importantly- if Harden doesn’t warm up tonight, and the game gets cancelled, I think we might see 97-98mph from an 8-days-rested Harden.
*Synth intro to "Jump"*
by SouthsideCub on Aug 12, 2008 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions
It depends on how long they feel the rain is going to go.
It’s possible they’ll call the game before the players even dress.
Remember what they did on May 11? When it was supposed to be Z vs. Randy Johnson at Wrigley? And the long delay made both managers change starters?
It could work that way tonight. The Cubs could warm up Sean Marshall; if it’s eventually called Harden could go tomorrow in a makeup DH.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
i think that would be ideal
Let Marshall go out there and pitch until 3am, if that’s what it takes, and have Harden go tomorrow.

Isn't Freddy Garcia too old to be called Freddy?
And isn’t he a free agent after this season anyway? An elaborate tryout more or less, no?
The critical thing to understand is that major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play. There are many possible reasons why this is the case, and I don't really have a concrete idea as to why it is.
But the one thing I do know is that it is the case.

It's frustrating to know all the big outcomes
ahead of time. I still watch but it’s like knowing the final Cubs score before watching the game. And if they replay that men’s relay finale one more time… and what IS IT with Bob Costas’ hair? Talk about a terrible dye job! Mesmerizing.
I learned this week that Bob Costas wears a rug...
That’s no dye job my friend. That is a bad Hairclub for Men model. He didn’t have it quite glued down right while outside Tiammenon Square the other day. His hair was more crooked than Tony Soprano. Hence the cat is officially out of the bag. I have forever hated that pompous smug overly wordy product of St. Louis.
Who in the world told you that?
It is not a rug. By the way, Costas is a product of Queens, and was reared in New York State. He is not from St. Louis. Get your facts straight.

Yep. Conflation of facts
Here’s what Wikipedia says:
Bob Costas was born in Queens, New York in a Catholic family, the son of Jayne (née Quinlan) of Irish American descent and John George Costas of Greek American descent, who was an electrical engineer.[1] He grew up in Commack, New York, graduating from Commack South High School. Following high school, he attended the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, though he left school before graduating to begin his professional career. His sportscasting career started while attending Syracuse University, as an announcer for the Syracuse Blazers minor hockey team. His career as a professional began as play-by-play announcer for the Spirits of St. Louis of the American Basketball Association, followed by a stint with KMOX radio in St. Louis. Costas later did play-by-play for Chicago Bulls broadcasts on WGN-TV during the 1979-1980 season.2 He was briefly employed by the CBS network prior to joining NBC Sports in 1980.
Facts?????
BM and facts don’t mix. ;-)

I'm too much of a news junkie
to stay away from the headlines, alas. I’m also a half-day behind on the action (this is a busy month work wise and sports wise!) so I’m just plain old doomed as far as scores are concerned. I think NBC’s doing a fairly decent job this time out. They still do those treacly spots, but they’re not nearly as sticky sweet as in the past. Boy, do I miss Jim McKay, though.

12:10 & 6:15 central time tomorrow
braves radio guys assume
same pitching matchups from tonight for the 1:10 game
So...
what do you guys think of penalizing one team or the other for arguing? say something like giving extra balls or strikes or a balk.

Sure,
way to stop my attempt at starting a stimulating and interesting debate.

strikes and balls are fundamental part of the game....
dont see it ever changing.
So interesting debate, about something that almost is guanteed to never happen. I gotta agree w/ Sue

I was playing around
not seriously expecting to start the debate again. I thought that other thread was really funny. It made me wish we were all in a bar in Wrigleyville having the discussion together.

Monday's is my favorite bar in the whole world
It has all the requirements of a great bar:
-Drinks that are 4/5 booze,
-Minimal distractions (so you can focus on your drink!)
-Free dum-dum suckers
-A smoking porch if necessary
-You can spit on the floor if you so desire
-And the drinks are CHEAP!!
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
never been my crowd that hangs out there
but that being said… that is why there are a ton of bars in Madison b/c one will appeal to almost everone. :)

Well then what are you favorite Madtown bars? Both you and Shanghai?

Depends what the mood is
If it’s darts, Monday’s. Watching sports, State Street Brats – or for less crowded, Regent St. Retreat, Big 10 Pub or Stadium Club (former Jingle’s). Hanigng out in a pub, the Irish Pub. More “upscale”, White Horse Inn.

Havent been able to stalk the sit for a couple days…did the TWSS’ get banned or something? Becuase the above post would have been quite worthy….

According to WGN radio
It’s
Marquis vs Morton at Noon
Harden vs Campillo at 6
Some people have 3 layers, like pie. Blog Blog Blog
Interesting if risky
two weaker pitchers match up and then the two better pitchers ( by stats). Gives a better chance for
a sweep and higher risk of being swept.

Rumor has it
That Raul Ibanez and Jerrod Washburn were claimed off the wavier wire – wonder if either of those were us. Ibanez would be good backup for a slumping Fukudome and Marquis would be expendable…both of those guys would be good rent-a-players IMO
Also
Pittsburgh is having a hard time signing #2 overall pick Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt. I live walking distance to Vandy’s baseball stadium and this guy could be the real deal – the next Ryan Braun or the next Aramis Ramirez. Both of whom did their AAA here in Nashville…
