Gary Sheffield Waived By Tigers
No, I don't want him on the Cubs -- they don't need him. Just posted this as a point of interest. I suspect he's going to Tampa.Teams aren't permitted to comment on the waiver process, so it's possible the timing is coincidental. But there were indications that the Tigers floated Sheffield's name in trade talks before the July 31 trading deadline. So it seems likely that Sheffield's latest remarks have prompted them to see if interest in him may have picked up this month in the wake of a number of injuries to prominent players on several contenders.
Other teams would have until Thursday afternoon to place a claim on Sheffield, who has one year remaining on his contract (at $14 million) beyond this season. If he clears waivers, he could be traded to any of the other 29 teams. If he's claimed, the Tigers then would have 48 hours to deal him to the club that claims him.

Tampa Bay would seem to be a good fit

2008 Cubs: Who needs nine innings, when you only need a 7th?

Well... I think he's from Tampa
So, that would be a good fit.
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

I heard that BOS will block him by claiming him.
Is this the case?

If it is, I bet the Tigers will say, "He's yours!"
And the Red Sox do NOT want him.

Sheffield is owed $14 million next season, therefore I doubt Boston will claim him for fear of being on the hook for that salary
Remember the Randy Myers debacle several years ago? Toronto put the significantly faded reliever on waivers and San Diego put in a claim to block him being traded along with cash to Los Angeles (or was it San Francisco). Well, Toronto jumped on it and forced Myers and his remaining $12 million on San Diego.

my guess too
with Longoria going down for 15 days with a broken bone in his wrist. Thats seems to sound familiar with our first baseman from a couple years ago. That was a VERY long 15 days, if you know what I mean.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything.
Former Dodgers GM Paul Depodesta:
Due to these rules, many teams will place virtually there entire 25-man Major League roster on trade waivers at some point during August (maximum of seven per day) even if they have no intention of trading any of them.

True.
But in this case, I think the Tigers have had it with Sheffield and they’re going to deal him.

Not with $14 mil due next season..
and the Astros already having a semi-DH/LF coming back for ‘09 in the person of Carlos Lee. I can see the Mets taking on the payroll though, and a chance to grab a local headline away from the Yanks.

Isn't this the last year of Sheff's contract?
I thought it was a two year deal.

He'd be ideal for the fish...
He’d be an upgrade over Josh Willingham. Then they could trade him in the offseason for peanuts.

Good for Detroit
Here it is that Dave Dombrowski and Jim Leyland salvage his tattered career coming out of New York and he reverts back to old form and blasts Leyland for platooning him and not playing him in the outfield even though he can’t even throw. Serves the bastard right to be unmercifully cut. Tigers are swallowing a lot of salary on this move, but I say good for them. Sheffield is a cancer in the league of fellow roid boy Barry Bonds.

Loads Of Talent And Crap For Brains
For someone with his ability, he’s been on far too many teams. His problem is he has chip on his shoulder the size of Sa-Sa-Sabathia, and therefore he’s always off in a corner somewhere snarling like a dog. Thing is, the guy is just stupid. As in not smart, no intelligence, and more to the point, no common sense. Nothing is ever his fault, it’s almost always about race, and after a short amount of time in a new city he’s always blatherig on about the last place he was, how so and so had problem with black players, or he was misunderstood, or some such shit. And now, he has a basic misunderstanding about the meaning of the word platoon and what it means in baseball. He doesn’t understand the word because as I said, he’s not that bright.
However, somebody will probably want him for the stretch run, and if he does go somewhere else, by the end of the season he’ll find something to complain about there, too. Why? Because the guy is an idiot.
He’s my least favorite player of all time. No one else comes close. His physical gifts are Hall of Fame caliber, but his head qualifies as a felony. A bigger jackass you will never find. Even more than Bonds. If there’s any justice in baseball this is the end of his career.
So let me tell you what I REALLY think…......

Yep
Gary Sheffield is a puke and a race baiter. It’s also very obvious that he was long time steroid abuser.

Yes.
He hated playing in Milwaukee and wanted to get out of there, so he admitted deliberately dogging it so they’d get rid of him.

Jerk? No Doubt
A cancer? For sure
Former steroid user? Based on Game of Shadows, I would say yes.
Dumb? Not in the slightest. This guy is probably one of the smarter guys in the whole league.
That doesn’t mean I want him on the Cubs though. I can’t stand the guy and as a Tigers fan I hope he is playing with someone else (not the Cubs) very soon.

But he insists he didn’t know that’s what they were.

I would suggest.....
.... that someone with the history of Sheffield, whose career is riddled with self-inflicted wounds, eminently avoidable wounds, is indeed a very stupid man.

Sheff
Sheff is the type of player that should never be given more than one year on a contract. It doesn’t matter which team he plays for. He wears out his welcome every single time. He really must be a bitter person.

The sad thing for him
is that he is going to be a miserable lonely old man with NO ONE who wants to talk to him or be a friend to him. A man will reap what he sows.

Sheffield reminds me a lot of...
...Albert Belle. Same horrible attitude, penchant for off-beat sayings and ideas, offensively talented (no pun intended), and--per the comment above—likely to be lonely old men. To quote Goose from Top Gun, “they were abused children.” – TL

All I know is
if the Cubs make the world series (knock on wood) the Cubs are light a bat. As of right now, Fukudome can’t hit. I would not be upset if we signed him.

I’d be upset. Sheffield is an ASS. He can’t field. He’s not hitting.
Other than that, he’s a perfect fit….

He may be a jerk, he may wind up a miserable old man...
but he has been paid a ton of money. All these things were known, and the Tigers signed him anyway. Stupid.

Nitpick
They didn’t sign him; they traded three minor leaguers to the Yankees for him. None of the three has made the major leagues yet.
