Open Thread: Cubs vs. Braves, Wednesday 8/13 (Game Two), 6:15 CT
Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves, Aug 13, 2008 6:15 PM CDT
Nice win this afternoon -- now let's keep it going and get the Cubs' first doubleheader sweep since the division-clinching sweep of the Pirates on September 27, 2003.
This thread will serve as the first-pitch thread as well as the pregame thread for game two; the schedule for the overflow threads is below. I'll post a more complete recap of both doubleheader games tomorrow morning.
Rich Harden, who was originally supposed to start last night and is instead starting this game, thus won't be able to start on short rest Sunday in Florida; instead, Lou will have choices:
Samardzija, of course, started in the minors but hasn't gone more than two innings since his recall. Harden, then, would likely go again on Tuesday against the Reds at home. But that's getting ahead of ourselves. The Cubs may wait to see who they need in the Atlanta series before picking a starter for Sunday.
"I can't bring Harden back on short rest, but I can bring Marquis back possibly," Piniella said Wednesday. "By him pitching the day game, it gives him a little longer time. If not, we'll either pitch [Jeff] Samardzija or pitch [Sean] Marshall."
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Again, a reminder that these numbers are Harden's with the Cubs only; his full-season numbers are in the pitcher box above.
The Braves must like Jorge Campillo a lot; they originally signed him in 1996, but released him a year later. He bounced around the Mariners' chain for a long time and pitched in eight games for them from 2005-2007 with little success. This year, forced into Atlanta's rotation by injuries, he's done quite well. He has never faced the Cubs.
Again, since I wrote about Harden in the thread for last night's rained-out game, here's a repeat of that for this one:Rich Harden faced the Braves in interleague play on May 17 in Atlanta and got a win. He allowed four hits in seven innings, all singles, walked one and struck out eight. One of those hits was by Mark Teixeira, who's no longer on the team. Casey Kotchman, who was acquired for Teixeira, is 3-for-12 (all singles) vs. Harden (from Kotchman's days with the Angels while Harden was in the AL).
Tonight's game can be found on CSN Plus (CLTV in Chicago; check your cable system if you're not in the city), and on SportSouth, and BOTH feeds are on EI. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Baseball-reference.com game preview
Once again, a reminder that you can find the overflow comment threads, including the first pitch thread, on the right sidebar of both the front page and any interior page in the box headed "RECENT STORIES IN GAME THREADS". As noted above, this thread will serve as both the pregame and first pitch thread, since it's being posted near 5 pm CT, and the overflow comment threads will post at 6:45, 7:45 and 8:30 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

My take on this
I give credit to Adam Calderelli for pointing out that this all goes back to `07 vs. Braves. Bear with my fuzzy recall. Feel free to correct/fill in my blanks:
2007
1. Soriano hits 3 homers in 1 game in Atlanta.
2. Braves retaliate with HBP.
3. Lilly retaliates next game, gets ejected in first inning.
4. Hit batsman (forgot name) delivers forearm smash to Mike Fontenot on play at 2nd.
2008:
5. Braves drill Soriano in Wrigley, bust his hand.
6. Soriano hot dogs drive off wall at Atlanta.
7. Braves throw at his head.
TBC…
That was Edgar Renteria who stuck his fist in Fontenot's face as he slid into the bag
However, there is a disconnect in this chain of events: number 4 and number 5 were both the Braves doing something to the Cubs. Actually, I don’t remember if number 5 was on purpose – maybe it wasn’t but rekindled all of this.
Finally, the thing that started all this last year was so much that Soriano hit 3 homers, I think it was that he cadillaced it on all three.
Interesting that Lilly is the starting pitcher today. Adds a bit of drama, since he’s the one pitcher involved who might still hold a grudge from last year…..
My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

That's OK with me
for all the reasons already stated 100x here and elsewhere, i.e. he’s adjusting on multiple levels
True enough.
Also, his plus defense in RF makes him worth keeping in the lineup, and the rest of the team is sort of carrying him.

But that would have meant DeRosa in RF and Dome on the bench. I think Lou wants him to get as many AB as possible to get him going again (Dome, that is).

Day / Night Doubleheaders Do Suck!
waaaaaay too much time between games
Being the visiting team, I wonder what the Cubs do to kill time between games?
Eat a catered meal? Watch a movie? Take a nap?

It's not like Wrigley, where they could leave the ballpark

They probably just hung out in the clubhouse.

get the right corner one if you must climb into the stratosphere
it puts you in a position, with a pair of field binoculars, to be able to look into the Cubs dugout and bullpen and gets you about as close to the gate exits as you can. Getting out of Turner Field parking is a nightmare.

Why I suck at fantasy baseball
Campillo is on my BCB team, he was a good pick up but I can’t let him start against the
Cubs even in a fantasy league. No wonder I am 46 points behind ( but still ahead of
Al)
"I am not ashamed to say I love Greg Maddux" - Jim Hendry
what do we know about campillo,
except he has really good numbers?
pitch count for him 100/110?
Apologies if this has already been posted about Soriano:
About his earlier posing>
Soriano was booed by Cubs fans after he stood and watched a long fly ball hit the left-field wall for a long single in the eighth. Soriano didn’t run to first, apparently thinking the ball would clear the fence.
He was stranded on third base when the inning ended.
“I apologized to him and I apologized to my teammates,” Soriano said after speaking with manager Lou Piniella. “I said that’s not going to happen again.”
Watching possible homers without running has been an issue throughout Soriano’s big-league career. He was criticized by the New York Yankees following the 2001 AL Championship Series opener for failing to run out a ball he thought was a home run against the Seattle Mariners and getting only to first base when it clanked off the wall.
“I talked to Alfonso about it, and I told him that he’s one of our leaders here and there’s no reason for that,” Piniella said. “He apologized and said it won’t happen again. Over.”
Wait a minute... who am I here?
Hopefully it's a lesson learned
and we’ll see it practiced.

Don't want to jinx it . . .
but the Braves announcers just threw out a stat that Harden is 32-0 in his career when he gets 4 runs or more . . . that’s amazing

Turner field is waaaaaay more filled now then it was earlier.
They say the attendance was 27,000, i would have been suprised if there was 10,000 people there at 1. Shame I couldn’t stay for both games. It was nice though because during the 7th inning stretch all you heard was root root root for the Cubbies :) The souths version of wrigley :)
Poll question:
All things considered which fan base is more lame, Braves fans or Dodger Fans?

Braves fans
Cub fans overtook that park in 2003 NLDS. If you can’t support your team in the playoffs, it’s pretty weak sauce.

It was shaping up that way
When I walked out after game 1, I had to wade through a lot of people waiting for the gates to open for game 2.
A blowout would be really nice
we could get the starters out early. Atlanta seems to be conceding this game. Look at that lineup!

Not looking forward going to the House of Pain on Friday
We’re playing awesome ball against the Braves, we need to really finish strong in August, hopefully at least an 8 game lead. With a tough road schedule in September we’re gonna need it! Perhaps we can get either Ibanez or Washburn for the stretch drive, both of whom were claimed by somebody on the wavier wire….
