Olympics discussion thread

I didn't see one of these up yet, and hell, it only happens every four years.  Discuss what you want, but as always, try not to be rude to others for having differing opinions.

Here are my opinions so far about these Olympics:

*Phelps has been absolutely amazing and dominant at all the events he's been in

*The Men's Olympic gymnastic team won bronze and their attitude was absolutely hilarious.  They reminded me of a group of frat guys.

*The Women's gymnastic team got silver while China got gold, it was well deserved based on performance, but I wish the US could have won to put cheating China in their place.

*US men's basketball and softball have been absolutely dominant.  They play Greece today and look for the US to make a statement by dominating them.

*Handball is a badass sport.

If the Cubs were in the Olympics:

Who would be in what event?

My team (if this team had to play for the USA) -

Mike Fontenot – Gymnastics team – perfect height and agility

Soriano – Shot-put, discus, javelin – He can toss and stand and watch his work and not get yelled at for doing so. ;)

Reed and Jimmy – Long Jump – face forward of course they way they do in the field!

Go Cubbies and USA!!

If you want a badass sport...

Nothing against handball because it is a tough sport, but every four years I am in absolute awe of the water polo dudes. To go up and down the ‘court’, endure the high level of physical contact above and below the waterline, and all the while they’re swimming or treading water… simply amazing.

Men's game against Greece

Greece is gonna try and bully their way to a win. The thing we have going for us is that guys like LeBron and DWade are hungry for revenge.

I cannot wait for the game.

What a blowout!

This team is so different from the last olympic team. LeBron has been dominant. Carmelo and Bosh and Wade have been real good. The youngster form a very focused team. Old guard guys, who are used to dominating without trying, need to go. Kidd is done, and Kobe is getting way too many minutes for a guy who just shoots, and not that well at that.

I've always been leery

One thing that gets me about some olympic sports is the judges scoring a performance. Like diving or gymnastics. How consistent is that type of scoring? I have no doubt they are qualified and know about the sport, but something has always made me nervous about that. I like the sports that have an obvious winner and loser. If Phelps out swims a guy, I can see it. If a tiny Chinese girl twirls through the air and a tiny American girl twirls through the air I can’t see what the difference is.

Can anyone clarify the way these events are scored? Possibly the history behind it?

by trefrog66 on Aug 14, 2008 12:15 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I know exactly what you mean

To me, these sports seem to be subjective to me as well. I’ve been following the Olympics and gymnastics caught my interest so I’ve looked up more information on it.

The way gymnastic scoring worked pre-2006 was based on a 10.0 scoring system. Every twistie thing they did was given a specific rating based on difficulty and there were special skills that all the gymnasts had to do. Basically before 2006, they were trying to get scores very close to 10 by all the judges and they were averaged for that gymnast’s score.

There was controversy at the 2004 olympics involving American Paul Hamm that led to a different scoring system. Now it is scored by using two scores combined. The first score is called the A score which is predetermined and based on how difficult the routine is. The second score is the B score which is based on execution. The B score has multiple judges and starts at a 10 and they deduct points for mistakes and bad form. Add those scores together and you get your score for the round. A score of 16 or better is usually very good.

The problem is that scoring for these events have always been very gracious to the hosting city or the home favorite. It seems to me that in these Olympics, mistakes that Chinese gymnast make aren’t deducted as much, but that’s just me.

I didn’t really know the story behind this until I looked it up because I didn’t pay attention to the Olympics before 2004, but the gymnast Kerry Strugg had one of the best Olympic moments I had ever seen. If you haven’t seen it, check out the youtube link, it almost brought a tear to my eye.

US women gymasts were out of it before they got there

My wife knows the scoring exceptionally well; watching every move by every ‘woman’. Just as figure skating has its’ scoring woes, so does she believe gymnastics too has that issue, maybe worse; scandals aside. I don’t know much about it but what she’s told me that I can remember and keep up with her, the mistakes by Alicia on the beam and the other minor issues the other ladies had late in the competition (like stepping out during the floor exercise) would have had no impact on the final standings.

She thinks the US women didn’t stand a chance, even if they were perfect. Regardless though, I thought they and the men did well. I know I could never do 10% of that stuff they do, flying around the way they do and not only not get hurt but make it look graceful yet strong. Let’s hope Shawn can get the womens overall Gold. I know Horton struggled in the mens competition this morning.

Phelps is utterly amazing; what else can be said? It’s like he can turn it up a notch whenever he wants to; that is awesome. That 4×100 final where Lezak came back; against all teams none other than the French, was very exciting. Some of the other swimmers are doing well too. No way the US ladies were going to beat the Aussies in their 4×100 today. And they did well to hold onto the Bronze.

With all the crap going on there, from the fake fireworks to the lip-sync singing of a 9-year old to the under-age ‘women’ gymnasts, I have to wonder how these stories affect any of the athletes.

I follow the summer games fairly close (no where near as close as the winter games) but trying to keep the politics out of it and the fact the olympics are in a communist land, I think the US teams overall are doing well. And they haven’t even started track events yet.

1. Where do any of them come in contact with one another?
2. They do not actively participate in any staged outcome. It’s a scoring issue.
3. Have you ever tried to do any of those activities?

1) They don’t. The pro wrestling crack was to say that gymnastics is about the story for many people, not the action. I obviously do not include your wife, who is in the know in a lot.

2) See above

3) That’s hardly the point. I probably couldn’t do a Frankensteiner without breaking my neck, but that doesn’t make pro wrestling legit.

99.999 percent of people couldn’t walk halfway across a balance beam without falling. They couldn’t hang for more than 10 seconds from the bottom of the still rings without dislocating their shoulders. That doesn’t mean we can’t be critical of the sport.

Another way they can make the Olympics better is to add some drinking elements to some events and see who could handle the booze the best and still perform. Could you imagine a “16 year old” Chinese gymnast who weighs 60 pounds after downing a zima. It’s like watching a midget get drunk off taking shots from a thimble. :-)

In fact, I poo-pooed them last week on this site, but I’ve got to admit that the swimming events and Shawn Johnson have me glued. Strange, but I can’t remember an Olympics that was this interesting. Maybe it’s just me getting older and more nostalgic, or maybe it’s the local angle with Johnson.

for Shawn Johnson tonight. She is the World Champ on the beam and was fantastic on it Tues. night. She had one little miss step on her floor exercise otherwise she did well for her team. Tonight she’s on her own. I wish her the best.

Phelps is must see TV. I hope he gets the 8 gold medals he’s after.

Can’t wait for track and field to start too. I will be cheering hard for Lolo Jones to get a gold too.

She's got a good chance to win it

That was a physical mistake. Alicia’s issues were mental. She seemed to be psyched out waiting so long before going on the beam. My wife swears that w/o the mistakes during the team competition late, they still would not have made up the 2.375 pts.

Don’t be surprised if Nastia makes a run at it too. What a way of redemption if both of the medal.

I really wish the announcers would do more

To explain scoring to the rest of us. The lead guy is the biggest propagandist I’ve ever heard and is useless. The former gymnasts sound like they know what’s up, but they don’t explain it.

They should take some time, slow down a couple of routines, and really tell us what the judges see. For the average person, we just see the landing and any falls. Show us if the toes aren’t pointed, or the legs come apart, or the hands wobble, or whatever it is your wife and others in the know see.

If a gymnast did a quintuple back somersault-twist (I exaggerate) but hopped two inches on the landing, the average American would say, “Awp! She didn’t stick it! Give it to the American girl!”

As far as the waiting, hasn’t it come out that it was more NBC’s fault for wanting more commercials than anything the Chinese did?

Pluto will always be a planet to me!

You must not be watching

the same games as me. The announcers do tell you what the ahtletes did wrong when they go over it in slow motion and tell you how much will be taken off for that error. As far as the delays it is not done by NBC. It’s the judges taking so long to score the athlete’s routines. While waiting for Alicia to do the beam NBC stayed right there.

Good luck Shawn Johnson, Lolo Jones and Doug Schwab. Bring home the gold!!!

by sue369 on Aug 14, 2008 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not NBC...my mistake

But still TV, according to the USA gymnastics prez

Karolyi blames TV delay: Video killed the balance-beam star.

U.S. women’s gymnastics coordinator Martha Karolyi said a TV delay broke Alicia Sacramone’s concentration with the U.S. and China in a tight race for the gold medal.

Sacramone, the first gymnast in the U.S. beam rotation, twice approached the balance beam and was twice told to wait. After a delay that seemed “like five minutes” to her, she said, she finally was allowed to mount.

She failed, falling off, the beginning of a ruinous routine that opened the door for China to win gold. Why the delay? Did the Chinese try to psych her out?

No, TV needed time to adjust.

“There was a two-minute delay so [they] could get Alicia’s routine into the world feed,” USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny told the Philadelphia Daily News.

I don’t hear the announcers saying all this. Here is what I hear:

Trautwig: “The Americans will try to defeat the dirty competitors from the other dirty nations who somehow have the audacity to think they even belong on the same floor with our American princesses”

Daggett and Elfie: “Yeah! China SUCKS! USA!”

Daggett: “This is a great routine. Look at these flips. Look at the power. I don’t see what the judges can deduct here.”

Judges: 9.1

Elfie: “That’s a very strong score…”

(It is, but where did the nine-tenths go?)

Daggett: “Ooooh, there’s a mistake…” But he won’t say.
Elfie: “Yep, there it was…”
Trautwig: “You can’t make mistakes like that and expect to beat the Americans, who have lost their partners, cars, houses, dogs, pickup trucks and girlfriends, but are still in contention for the silver!”

And so on and so forth.

I kid, but I honestly don’t hear that. I hear a lot of “great routine” and then see 8.7s.

Pluto will always be a planet to me!

by DaBard on Aug 14, 2008 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How 'bout that 1-2 finish?

Both girls were strong the whole time through the 4 rotations.

I think the announcers do give some insight on the going’s on but only the folks really versed in gymnastics (myself not included) will fully understand.

On the delay’s and all, I wouldn’t be surprised if the communist gov’t there has a hand in anything. They already have the world questioning them about the age of their athletes. Who knows what else can be going on there. I’m just glad to see our girls go out there and put up strong performances.

Badass? I’m all for the ’everyone’s entitled to their own opinion,’ but as far as I’m concerned that “sport” is a joke. I laughed when I turned on the TV and there were two teams running around trying to throw a ball into a net guarded by someone in gym clothes. It’s like lacrosse without the, well cool parts. 1. any biathalon – cross country ski for miles, stop, slow your heart rate quickly enough to point a rifle and shoot targets accurately, then go back and ski your ass off a few more miles.

2. luge – tiny sled, huge curves, 90MPH. Only way that’s more bad-ass is if you go down head first. Talk about a rush…!

I get this all the time at work, especially the winter games where my interest is way higher than the summer games. Many others just don’t like it.

It’s funny that one of the guys here at work, not too many years older than me is still jaded by the ‘94 strike; still rips on baseball when we’re all at lunch. It makes me want to talk about baseball more. So what happens the other day? He starts ripping on the olympics. I told him to quit being such a grumpy old bastard. If he said he just wasn’t interested, I would have accepted it. But he chose to rip on it without any substance behind his statement of dislike.

Did anyone watch the men's all around gymnastics competition?

I wanted to see some falls to see how the gymnasts would react, but when two falls actually did happen during the event, it made my face cringe. Is it sadistic of me to want to see falls?

Update! And as Sue396 said, please recommend this post

I would love to see this Olympic thread in the recommended fanpost until it ends. There’s going to be plenty of exciting things that will happen as the Olympics proceed.

Update:
Tennis: James Blake finally beats Roger Federer; Venus and Serena gets eliminated from singles competition.

Basketball: USA beat Greece 92-69, and the Women’s team is rolling as well.

China: They’re beating the US with the total overall medal count as of today, but we got Phelps going tonight along with athletics (track and field) yet to come.

Volleyball: The men’s indoor volleyball team stays undefeated beating Bulgaria today. I’m hoping the team keeps rolling to play for their coach who’s life was taken. It seems like they will have a lot of motivation.

Another article of China's use of underage gymnasts

The more and more I hear about this, the more convinced I am that China is cheating and that the IOC and FIG are allowing this to happen. They are using these girls’ passports as absolute proof of their age, but it is completely ridiculous to believe that the Chinese government does not have the ability to create fake documents. If they don’t care about the rule, they should get rid of it completely to allow other countries to take advantage of younger female athletes. The IOC and FIG are losing a lot of credibility with the way they are handling this issue and will continue to do so until they do something about it.

Here is the recent article on yahoo.

Great Women's gymanstics all around

Americans Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liuken win gold and silver respectively. They did wonderful tonight and it was well deserved. The only thing that bothered me was that the scoring seemed a little biased towards the Chinese gymnasts. It seemed to me that the judges were far more lenient when they made mistakes. I might be a little biased, but i honestly noticed there was a problem with scoring. Other than that, congratulations to these gymnast for representing the red, white and blue and all the others for performing so well tonight.

by aznsensation on Aug 15, 2008 12:18 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It was the other way around...

With Nastia winning the gold and Shawn the silver. I thought the judging was biased towards the Chinese also, but it all worked out in the end.

It’s gymnastics. Every four years, they trot out, do their thing, and whine about the scoring.

I was so hoping the politics

would not surface at the Olympics (long shot) but with a communist country and any time the French are involved (can you say skating scandel screwing the Canucks a few years back?) you can bet that any sport that has subjective scoring will have will have its window of uncertainty pushed to the max when questionable tactics are used; in scoring or even at the higher levels of management.

No one has to look any further than the [temporary, IMHO] elimination of baseball and softball at the 2012 games.

I've got a great track record with suggesting rules changes :)

But how about this one?

A panel of coaches designs a routine for each apparatus. The Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners from the previous World Championships have veto power over those routines, forcing the panel to go back to the drawing board if one says, “too hard, too easy,” whatever.

Every single gymnast must do that routine.

I don’t know. Maybe gymnastics likes this. It figures that controversy is part of the appeal and that if people go to message boards the next day and say, “Yeah, we got screwed” or in this case, “They tried to screw us, but the girls won anyway!” that’s OK.

Pluto will always be a planet to me!

by DaBard on Aug 15, 2008 7:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not quite sure that would work

But I see where youre coming from. Basically it would kinda be like the required portions of Ice Dancing where all competitors do the same short program, that gives you an equal benchmark to start judging from.
mmmmm – could work

If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

by carolinacub on Aug 15, 2008 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right...

The judges could say, “OK, this is what this routine is SUPPOSED to look like” and deduct from there. In theory, that’s what they do anyway, but with so many routines and so much room for interpretation, it goes off the rails.

The problem is, what is good for fairness isn’t always good for TV. The show could get boring if everyone was doing the same thing

It's tough...

But for distance swimmers it isn’t any harder than the 50 or the 100 is for sprinters. I think it’s odd that the commentators were suggesting that Hackett’s achievement was better because of the “grueling” nature of the event.

Every time I watch the Olympics it makes me want to be a competitive swimmer again…

by Bump Bailey on Aug 16, 2008 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

It’s all about conditioning. If you’re conditioned to swim/run the longer distances it will be easier for you than doing a sprint or mid distance event would be. Vice versa for sprinters.

It’s kind of the same deal with strokes, too. Part of what makes Phelps so special is that he’s so good at all of the strokes, in the IMs and individually. Most swimmers have a stroke or two, and that’s it. To be gold medal level good in so many events is truly amazing.

I won't stop talking about Spitz

Dude went 7 for 7. Wasn’t allowed to use goggles. Chose not to wear a cap and had a rockin’ porn star stache!

Also, he competed in the 100m free, which Phelps ducked. If the 50m free would have been in place, he’d have won that one too.

Phelps did better and deserves every bit of the accolades, but Spitz shouldn’t suffer too much in comparison.

The commentators for NBC just said that one of the female divers for the U.S. is the daughter of the guy who owns the Cubby Bear and is a die-hard Cubs fan! Go her!
