Ready for a Great Weekend
What a great time it is! The Boys in Blue appear to hitting on all cylinders. After sweeping the hapless Braves for the eigth straight road win (who says this is a weak road team?), the Big Blue Express steams into south Florida.
I don't know about you, but I'm feeling pretty good about our team. The pitching is good, the bats are hot, and the defense is stellar. Hendry has assembled a pretty good bunch of guys from Lou down to the batboys. Other than a certain reliever, who shall remain nameless, there appear to be no chinks in this armour.
When was the last time you felt this good about our chances this late in the season? Sure, '84 was great, but some of us were just tots back then or not around at all. Could this be the best team since the glory days of the mid 20th century? What do you think?

All I know is
I’m not a total wreck watching every game from the edge of my seat like seasons past (especially 2003). I don’t have the feeling of waiting for the fat lady to sing. I feel good. My son says we can’t swagger, yet. But I feel a little swaggerish.

It really does say a lot
to not be a total wreck. When they have been in the lead of the division chase in years past everyone was always holding their breath or waiting for the other shoe to drop, usually justifiably. This is a nice change, and who would have imagined feeling like this while the Brewers have been blazing hot?
Your son is of course correct – we can’t swagger (there’s really no point anyway), but there’s no problem at all with feeling swaggerish. Just smile and enjoy it!

Since the midpoint of the season...
I’ve never really felt like a loss was imminent, other than that awful stretch right before Soriano came back, when we couldn’t hit and Milwaukee couldn’t lose. Even when a lead is blown by a reliever (Marmol vs. Giants or Howry vs. Brewers), I just roll my eyes and look at it as an inconvenience to an eventual victory.

Sitting on the airplane yesterday from Raleigh to Tampa....
I was wearing my “Illinois Rose Bowl 2008” T-shirt and my Cubs hat….
Flight attendant commented, “Looks like both your teams are giving you something to cheer about right now. Congratulations.”
It’s a great time to be a Cubs fan, no doubt. We are the class of the NL.
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow from the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind...
When my last remains go flying over the left field wall, I'll bid the bleacher bums adieu,
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue. --Steve Goodman

'84
was so much fun because it had been so long. Cable TV had just opened in many markets and Harry made the games so much fun to watch. That year it just felt that any game if we trailed late we were going to win. (Sound familiar?) It was a great bunch of guys and real baseball players. One of my biggest sports regrets is that team not making the series, they were the best team in the NL.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

I haven't been on this planet for THAT long
but the one thing I can say is, with this team, I never seem to lose hope…With other Cub teams in the not-too distant past (‘98, ’03, last year) it just always seemed that we didn’t fight back if we were down 3-4 runs…I would almost concede the game if we were down in the 7th or 8th…This team is different. I feel like no deficit is too unsurmountable, and I find myself getting excited with every comeback, and on the flip side, every time we put away a team for good (like the Braves this past series).
