Carpenter to DL
Here is the link from ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3537435
This probably also means Wainwright will return to the rotation instead of his rumored move to the pen. This may drive the Cards to ease back on the season throttle to make sure they have a healthy rotation in the future. This may be the straw that breaks the Cardinals back, but I would love to see them hang tough and battle Milwaukee down the stretch. I also hope that Carpenter really only has a minor thing here, I think he has worked very hard to get back and respect everything he does as a competitor.

Gee, what a surprise.
That’s two pitchers (Carpenter and Mulder) who have gone down for the Cardinals in the last two years. Guess Duncan isn’t as much of a wizard as everyone thinks.

In fairness to Duncan
Both of those guys have injury histories, but it is clear he cannot magically fix all mechanical issues with a pitcher.

It makes me cringe...
to think how much tighter a race this would be (AS IF IT ISN’T TIGHT ALREADY) if Mark Mulder and Chris Carpenter were 100% healthy.
DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.

did he hit a huge bump in the road back to the bigs or what?

Here's the thing, though.
It’s not like Mulder, Carpenter and Clement were fluke injuries. The Cardinals went into the season knowing they couldn’t count on contributions from them, and they really haven’t contributed much.

Also, when you look at the guys who replaced them,
Wellemeyer and Lohse, most likely, they’ve both had very productive seasons. If Carpenter and Mulder had been healthy, Lohse would likely have not been signed, although Wellemeyer could’ve helped that bullpen.

Sounds like they are being careful with a franchise pitcher in Carpenter
Can’t say that I blame them. At some point you need to be realistic over your chances in 2008 balanced with what is in the best long term interest of Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, etc. Lets just say the Cubs and Brewers haven’t been slowin down so the Cards could catch up.

In that sense...
…. I was surprised to even see Carpenter try to come back this year.

Tony
TLR has a hard time admitting he is beaten IMO. Unless they are way out, he isn’t going to give up on his team. Not sure that he is still going to, but it is getting late in the season.

Well....
Tony LaRussa has done one of his best managing jobs this year. And that’s saying a lot for a guy with over 2,000 career wins to go along with 5 World Series appearances. How he has kept that team in the thick of things is a testament to LaRussa. Even though the guy drives me nuts at times I have to give him his props.

The guy drives me crazy but there’s no question that he’ll go down as one of the all-time great managers.

TLR's Cardinal teams
Always play tough, and play a sound fundamental game. This is generally worth a few extra wins each season, and I think explains how they’ve hung in the race to this point.
Of course his use of relievers really makes me want to have MLB invoke a “reliever must face 2 batters” rule – heh.
Tough break for Carpenter, sorry to hear it. Cards have to be careful with him considering they’re on the hook for 3 more years and $44.5m

Don't get me started!
I’ve just never been able to jump onto the TLR bandwagon.
This is all just my opinion but I don’t think he’s as good a manager as he gets credit for. A lot of managers would have more wins under their belt if given some of the teams Tony has had to work with.
I have given him some credit, though, for this season. I think it may be one of his best since he’s been here, but I would bet a paycheck that if Whitey Herzog were managing this team he’d do a far better job, especially with the pitching. He’d have a bullpen by committee if he were having trouble we’re seeing this year.
I find Tony’s brand of baseball just flat boring. He’s just too predictable…get some guys on base and try to hit a home run. Not much there in the way of actually trying to manufacture runs.
Most of the excitement comes from between the lines. With Herzog, however, a LOT of excitement was coming from the dugout.
Tony always says he tries to put the best player(s) in the lineup to win the game. He says that all the time…but remember the all-star game? Albert was his best shot to win it and he let him rot on the bench.
Not only does Tony not always use the best player in a given situation but he doesn’t call the best play either. He has far more options available to him but he seems to have tunnel vision.
Personally, I’d put Whitey in the Hall of Fame before Tony.

Surely the ballparks and personnel explain
some of the differences between TLR’s teams and Herzog’s? Back in the 80’s the Cards had the full dimensions of a big stadium, the Astroturf and a heaping handful of speedy slap hitters. Busch was as big a homefield advantage back then as the Metrodome is for the Twins today.
Moving into the mid-90s, circumstances (lets be charitable and call it ‘a longball era’) really worked against having five gnats, two bashers and a catcher on the field – so relying more on power hitters like Lankford, McGwire, Edmonds and now Pujols is more adapting to the changes in the game, IMO.
But again, through it all my impression is that the Cards always play hard, and play smart. For both skippers, so I imagine it’s an organizational thing.
(Meanwhile we Cub fans get to watch underdeveloped prospects like Corey Patterson and Felix Pie come up to great hype – and have the holes in their game exposed by major league competition. But I think we’re finally getting our minor league act together, and Lou has little patience for dumb play. I’ve been waiting 30 years for our system to start producing useful position players in numbers, and it’s finally starting to happen.)

I'm disappointed
I’m not counting the Cards out quite yet, but I really have no interest in a Cubs-Brewers NLCS. I REALLY wanted to see a Cubs-Cards NLCS. To me, that would be one of the most fun series any of us would witness.

Well
I’d be perfectly happy to see the Mets beat the Brewers in the DS, and then we could destroy them in the CS.

Braves put Glavine back on the DL, too
So, that might be it for the season and for his career, given his age.

Glavine calls it quits.
Not really a Braves fan but I always admired the guy before he left Atlanta in ’02 / ’03.

Glavine should have retired at the end of 2007.
He had a good year. He was going to a team that was likely going nowhere, and the injuries only make him end his career on a sour note.
Some guys just don’t know when to hang it up.

That's brutal for the Cards
People like to say the Cubs are cursed, but the Cardinals have had as nasty a run of luck this year as any team I’ve ever seen. The Brewers looked like world-beaters last week, but they were facing AA quality opposition. If Carpenter comes back healthy in a week, and Wainwright performs, they could still run at the Brewers for the WC.

Tony and Lou's friendship might pay off.
Tony won’t dog it in the games against the Brewers. Dusty and a few other managers have already raised the white flag. I have mixed feelings about LaRussa’s penchant for inciting grudges where they don’t really exist. I think he orders his pitchers to throw at batters too much. But, he wins, and that is all that matters, baby. Of course, we still have some games against the Cardinals and he won’t be mailing it in against us either.
by Nibbles on Aug 15, 2008 8:35 PM CDT 0 recs
Is it a bias thing?
I don’t think TLR orders his pitchers to throw at batters that often…he just can’t afford to put people on base. He doesn’t even intentionally walk hitters all that much.
I watch just about all the Cardinal’s games and I just don’t get that feeling. But I’m looking at it from a different viewpoint.

Dusty's Doing It Unintentionally
by playing the veteran “horses” and not giving the Reds’ kids a chance, because of the old “preserving the integrity of the pennant race” BS he spouted in 05 and 06.

I dunno.
I think any Reds “kids” they have are already playing — Votto and Bruce. Last night they also started a couple of callups — Dickerson and Hanigan. The fact is, the Reds just aren’t very good no matter who they play. What I can’t figure out is why Dusty keeps trotting Corey Patterson out there. There have to be players in their system who can hit better than .197 at the major league level.
But hey, let’s hope he keeps doing that at Wrigley Field this week.

Dave - Question re: 2004
In your opinion, did TLR and the Cards tank on purpose to the Astros during the last week of the season, just to make sure it was Houston that won the WC instead of the Cubs?
