Minor League Wrap--August 15
Only one loss in the entire system tonight.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs just keep rolling, too, as they shut out the New Orleans Zephyrs, 1-0.
Mike Burns threw eight innings of the shutout. He bettered his record to 8-10 and allowed only four hits, walked no one and struck out six.
Michael Wuertz struck out two Zephyrs in a perfect ninth inning to record his second save.
Shortstop Andres Blanco was 3 for 3 with a double and scored the only run of the game. Second baseman Bobby Scales was 2 for 4 with the lone RBI.
Memphis was rained out tonight, so the magic number for the I-Cubs falls to 12.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were bested by the Birmingham Barons, 4-2.
Donnie Veal took the loss by allowing three runs in six innings. (A quality start, I guess.) Veal gave up eight hits and walked four. He struck out six Baron batters.
Jose Ceda gave up one hit and struck out two in an inning of scoreless relief.
Left fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 4 with a solo home run. It was his thirteenth home run of the season.

Daytona Cubs
The D-Cubs shut out the St. Lucie Mets, 6-0.
Marcos Mateo got the win with a nice start. Mateo pitched five innings and allowed only two hits and a walk. Mateo struck out four Mets.
Mike Cooper allowed one hit in two innings of scoreless relief. Blake Parker and Dustin Sasser each allowed a hit in one inning of scoreless relief.
Most of the D-Cub offense came from the long ball tonight. Russ Canzler hit his eleventh home run, a solo shot in the eighth inning. Canzler was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Right fielder Ryan Harvey's seventh home run on the year was a two-run bomb in the second inning. Harvey was 1 for 4. He also threw out a baserunner at the plate. DH Marquez Smith also hit his third homer in the Florida State League, a solo shot in the fourth inning. Smith was 1 for 4.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs kept the good news coming tonight by toppling the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 6-4.
Starter Robert Hernandez had some control issues, but still only allowed one run over four innings. That run scored on a solo home run. Hernandez walked four batters in those four innings and struck out three. He allowed four hits.
Chris Siegfried got the win by pitching two innings of relief and not allowing a hit or a walk. He struck out two. Craig Muschko picked up his sixth save by also tossing 1.2 perfect innings of relief. Muschko struck out one.
DH Dylan Johnston has now homered in both games he's played since returning from the DL. He hit a three-run home run in the first inning tonight. Johnston was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Left fielder Rebel Ridling also hit a three-run home run in a 1 for 4 evening.
Second baseman Josh Harrison was 2 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Catcher Luis Flores was 2 for 2 with a walk.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks were beaten by the Vancouver Canadians, 3-1.
Starter Jeffrey Beliveau missed a lot of bats tonight, for both good and bad. He pitched three innings and allowed one run on two hits and three walks. Beliveau struck out six Canadians.
Harol Tolentino got the loss in relief. Tolentino allowed one run on a hit and two walks over 1.2 innings.
The Josh Vitters hit parade just keeps going on. Vitters was 2 for 4 with a double tonight. Center fielder Drew Rundle provided the only Hawk run with a solo home run in the fifth inning. Rundle was 1 for 3 with a walk.
AZL Cubs
The AZL Cub drank the AZL Brewers dry, 12-4.
Chris Huseby got the win by allowing only one hit and walking no one over two innings of relief. Huseby struck out two Brewers.

I-Cubs since all-star break
Are hitting .325 AS A TEAM! Magic number is 11 and they have their largest lead of the season at 7.5 games. This is a pretty darn good AAA team and remember they are minus some bigger names after trades. They just keep winning!
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

At the Tennessee Smokies game...
Jim Hendry was there. It was funny that all of these Cubs fans walked right by him and did not notice him. He sat behind home plate in row 8. I sat in the section beside him in row 9. I wen’t over and talked to him and got his autograph. He was pretty cool, he just didn’t want anyone to recognize him.

I ran into Jim Hendry at Wrigley once.
It was kind of odd – I felt like I was the only person there who recognized him. (“There” being the walkway up, not Wrigley itself – about two dozen Cubs fans milling about.)

Chris Huseby
After having a solid year last year, he mysteriously lost his command in spring and has been trying to find it since then. There were awful reports about how he couldn’t play catch without throwing it wildly. Over the past month, there’s been signs of progress. Here’s hoping he can turn it around. We gave overslot to him a couple years ago (along with Drew Rundle and Cliff Andersen – those were the three names that stood out) based on the fact that prior to his surgery junior year of HS (I think), he was looking like an excellent prospect. His senior year was shaky, but there was hope. Up until last year, the overslot payment seemed like a good gamble. Here’s hoping he can turn it around. Riggins is definitely earning his pay this year with Rich Hill and Chris Huseby.

Good call on Huseby, Rundle and Andersen
I had high hopes for those three, as well, and none moreso than Huseby.
Good to see Rundle has been hot of late, too.
