Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Marlins, Saturday 8/16, 6:10 CT
Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins, Aug 16, 2008 6:10 PM CDT
In this space, where normally you'd see some sort of comment from me about tonight's game or some other baseball-related note, I'm going to shamelessly plug my friend Will Byington's new book, "We Are Cubs Fans", which contains some of Will's great photography and also reproductions of hand-written notes Will got people to write, talking about what it means to them to be a Cubs fan.
Will's going to be on the ABC-7 Sunday Morning News tomorrow about 8:15 am -- tune in if you're in the Chicago area.
Now, on to tonight's game!
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
It's hard to know what to expect from this pitching matchup. Sanchez missed more than a year after shoulder surgery and has made just three starts since returning. He had a good outing five days ago vs. St. Louis, but the Cardinals won anyway. He has never faced the Cubs. LH batters hit .400 vs. Sanchez, so Lou's going to start four of them tonight, including giving Derrek Lee the day off and starting Daryle Ward at 1B.
Sean Marshall has done a very good job in relief this season -- he's 1-0, 3.10 in 20 relief innings. In three starts he's 1-2, 4.08. He got hit pretty hard when he started two years ago in Miami, but a lot of those Marlins aren't on the team any more. Dan Uggla has gone 4-for-11 with two doubles vs. Sean; no other current Marlin has more than 8 career AB against him.
Today's game is on WGN and the Sunshine Network -- and it's after 6 pm CT, so EI will cover it. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Baseball-reference.com game preview
Once again, a reminder that you can find the overflow comment threads, including the first pitch thread, on the right sidebar of both the front page and any interior page in the box headed "RECENT STORIES IN GAME THREADS". Today's first pitch thread posts at 6 pm CT, and the overflow comment threads will post at 7 pm, 8 pm and 8:45 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I'm here
And a huge come from behind victory last night, hopefully knocking the Marlins down a peg or two.
Let’s make it two in a row in Miami and, what, 9 road victories in a row?
by DWChaney on Aug 16, 2008 3:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yup it would be nine
A series win in Miami would be huge. we always struggle so bad there.

Last night was win #9 in a row on the road
tonight would be #10

Have I missed something?
Why is Marshall starting? By my count, our 5 starters include Z, Dempster, LIlly, Harden, and Marquis.

Big game for road record....Cubs could come home at or above .500
This is a big deal, the Cubs are first in runs scored in the NL, second in runs allowed; first in home record and if they can erase this one weakness it will substantiate them as a WS contender. (They are tied with wins and 2 down in the loss column to LAA for best record.)
As for Ward, like Fukudome starting out with a dink for 2 runs in Atlanta he is now beginning to hit, Ward’s HR is a big confidence boost. Hitting is so psychological and if he does in fact turn it around there are few weaknesses on this club.
Big ball game…..approaching 29 games over .500 and now 6 up in the loss column to the chaser’s, who are playing a hot LAD team.
Hope Marshall goes 5 and then Marquis goes 2 with the lead.

Speaking of confidence boosts
Hitting the other teams closer is to me the biggest boost a team can get in the first game of a series. IMHO anyway.

Also I am happy to report that ’GN changed their logo and got rid of the creepy mascara eyes. Paranoids like myself can relax!

I'm here ( because the game has not started)
I miss not being able to post during games due to no functioning home computer
( a long story) but I love coming in and reading the game threads after the fact. It was
a “blast” to go through the posts about the “blast” last night. I literally try to imagine what
creative image Santoswoodenleg might be posting while I am home watching the game.
Perhaps when I scalp one of my World Series tickets ( not MINE the OTHER one) I will break down and get a computer though it is not really a money issue anyway.
I was of course broken hearted but not surprised that Maddux lost ONE TO NOTHING LAST NIGHT thanks to the wretched Padres offense but I can’t think of anyone I would rather outpitch him than Jaime Moyer. Raise your hands if you are old enough to remember their 1986 rookie season with the Cubs.
Home soon to watch tonight’s game. I trust a photo on Milton spearing the Magic Marlin
will be there tomorrow when I can go through the game thread.

They could not include any game broadcast footage due to MLB licensing issues.

I'm 20,
The first game I remember was a Cubs-Sox game at Wrigley in 1997, which was rained out(I still wear the Cubs poncho I bought), and the earliest TV game I remember was Kerry Wood’s 20 strikeout game in 98, I got home from school and I watched the last 2 innings, as my dad told me he was doing something special.

I have rarely if ever seen such zest for the game.
One of the truly wonderful things about Ernie Banks was that he always seemed to be truly enjoying himself playing baseball. In sports, movies, TV, music, wherever, there are people who are enjoying what they do and those who don’t – and they are often easy to tell apart.
Saw #14 hit some HR’s, play first, and generally light up Wrigley decades before the lights went in, if ya get the drift…

Hey guys...
…gonna be away for most of the game tonight, but I just wanted to show off my brand-spankin’ new PROJECT 3000 shirt and my two dogs. On the left is Madison, a 2.5 year old beagle with a mean howl and a love for everyone and thing, and on the right is my girlfriends 5 month old Shiz Tsu, Gus (Gus Gus from Cinderella). Will's Book --
Al - a lot of them very recognizable. I really enjoyed the photo and comments from the unforgetable “Bleacher Preacher.”
Great to hear about Will’s appearance on ABC. Just wish I could see it.
My daughter and Will graduated from high school together in 1996. They have remained friends over the years. When my wife and I were back in the Chicago area in late June and early July, we had a chance to visit with Will. He came to our daughter’s birthday party. She lives in Virginia now and was back to attend a wedding of a high school classmate. Will came to the birthday party and gave Laura a copy of his book.
Several weeks prior to publishing the book, my daughter had contacted me and told me about Will’s book. Will knew that I was a lifelong Cubs fan and asked Laura if I would like to contribute my comments. I did and they are in the back of the book.
After the Cubs/Giants game on July 12, my son and I met Will outside of Wrigley where he was “hawking” his book to passersby. I made sure to get a copy before I returned to Florida.
I highly recommend the book to every Cubs fan who reads and contributes to BCB. There are a lot of great comments, stories, and photos. Will has captured some great faces -
My son recently told me about a book signing that Will was having at Harry Caray’s in Wrigleyville. I do not know if it is coming up or is over.
But again — Cubs fans — pick up this book. It is worth every penny.

I was talking about the one when the CF fell down and Williams made a great running catch to save the no hitter for Pappas.
Although the one where Williams tracked the ball into the well to save Holtzman’s was fantastic as well.

Don't bet on Maddux retiring
As usual all he says he will go over it with his family at the end of the season. He is having a good year despite pathetic lack of run support. Maddux does not care if he is “back end” of the rotation starter as long as he can play and contribute. As I have posted more than a few times before his most telling comment on retirement was when he was asked in 06 and said " I don’t want to embarrass myself by any means but I would rather pitch bad than not pitch at all" Not nearly as scary as it sounds. Basically the guy LOVES to pitch, he also loves to hit, run the bases, shag balls , take batting practice ( he hit one in the stands before last nights game) sit on the bench with other pitchers and “call the game” , do childish pranks in the clubhouse etc.
The ONLY reason he retires is that his kids are getting older and he clearly would like to spend more time with them. I am hoping his wife and kids allow him to come out and play AT least one more season.

they call it the TOOTBLAN, and it’s counts the number of times a baserunner is thrown out due to his own stupidity. Here’s a link:

by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 16, 2008 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not all "caught stealing"s are "stupid.
Some of the “strike out / throw out” are the batter’s (or manager’s) fault. Having said that, I agree that Theriot is not a very good baserunner. Why? Some possibilities:
1. Riot is fast, but he is not fast like Michael Bourn. Yet he has NO power, so he has to have “speed” (or at least convince his manager he has speed) to stay in the ML. That leads him to take more chances than a guy like DeRo (who might be just as fast scoring from first on a double).
2. Lou has given him enough rope with which to hang himself three times. Last year, Michael Barrett was thrown out trying to go to third on a grounder to SS. Lou hung him out to dry publicly with one of his famous tirades. Riot had made the same twice in the previous ten days. Lou’s response? “He was a bit overaggressive.” No benching or public lynching. The result? He’s done it two or three times this year. The double standard is pretty obvious. As long as Riot knows he will get away with those baserunning blunders, he will take wild chances.
3. I’m not sure who the baserunning coach even is. DeJesus? Sinatro? Dernier isn’t with the team full-time. Riot could use some help in learning how to read pickoff moves.
4. Stealing bases isn’t easy with DLee at the plate. Lee is up there to drive in runs, not to take pitches to give Riot a chance to read moves. So sometimes Riot might run without being truly prepared.

I was getting score updates on my phone every few minutes, and it was hard to contain myself when I saw that DeRo had gone yard. And I was stunned when I saw 6-5 Cubs in the bottom of the 9th after seeing 5-3 most of the evening. Didn’t find out until later that Ward was the hero. Great for him! He’s got the toughest role on the team.

What? The Cubs getting TO the World Series? Or the Cubs WINNING the World Series?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I used to think it would be getting to the Series.
This year, I want to win it all!!!!

This year? You didn't want them to win in......say...1991....or 2005?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I've got to tell you. In past years, I'd have been content just to get to the Series.

But surely you would have wanted them to win it.

Absolutely.
But I’ve been like the manager at the end of “The Natural”. Just once, just once, let me see the Cubs in the Series.

Either. I'll love if it happens, but I guess I'm superstitious in that I
won’t say it will happen.

well, then why don't you believe in when?
you keep using IF.
Which is to me defeatist.

There's nothing wrong with saying if, it doesn't make you any less of a fan.
There have been plenty of fans of any team over the years that have been sure their team would make it, and been proven wrong. I want the Cubs to make it, and win it, more than anything, but nobody can be sure that they will.

Defeatist would be to say they won't make it.
I’m optimistic that they can, but I’m not sure that they will. Make sense?
by sackings108 on Aug 16, 2008 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No.
but I’m not going to argue it.
I just hate the “if”.

So it only makes sense to be 100% sure that they will, without a doubt,
make the world series? Whatever you say.

Yes.
Someday. it WILL happen. I have no doubt that it WILL, to me its always a matter of when.

Oh, I agree that someday it will.
I thought you were saying this year, for certain. Nevermind then.
by sackings108 on Aug 16, 2008 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No.
I do think that this could be a good year (and frankly the sooner the better lol) but no. I just believe in “when”.

I've been a Cubs fan since 1953.
I was with my mom in a five and dime store (if some of you remember them). There were two piles of baseball caps—Cubs & Sox. She asked me if I wanted a blue or black one. I said blue and have stuck with it ever since. Actually,it was tough being Cubs fan in the ’50s. Although we lived on the north side, most of my friends were Sox fans. One could hardly blame them. Sox were the much better team.
If I recall correctly, 1957 was when the Cubs had those weird hats with pinstripes.

Correct on the '57 caps.

Good to know
Some of my memories check out! I think the attitude was—and this reflected P.K. Wrigley’s way of doing business—if pinstripes worked for the Yankees, maybe they’d work for the Cubs. In any case, an easier solution than, say, upgrading the team’s farm system.
