Minor League Wrap--August 16

The signing deadline has come and gone and only three first round draft picks didn't sign.  The Nationals failed to come to terms with RHP Aaron Crow, the ninth pick in the draft, and the Yankees failed to sign RHP Gerrit Cole, the 28th pick.

With Crow, the issue was money, and he has signed to play with the independent Fort Worth Cats.  The Nationals will get an additional draft pick next year; the tenth overall pick.

For the Yankees and Cole, it was simply a matter that Cole decided he wanted to attend UCLA and delay the start of his professional career.  The Yankees' additional pick will be the 30th pick next season.

The Mariners have also not signed RHP Josh Fields, but Fields was a college senior and the August 15 deadline did not apply to him.  The Mariners retain his rights until June of next season.  The Pirates also failed to sign highly-touted (and highly-injured) second round pick Tanner Scheppers.  The Pirates will get an additional second round pick in the next draft.

The Cubs signed 28 of their top 30 picks.  Only tenth round pick RHP William Wilson and 27th round pick Sonny Gray did not sign.  Gray had sent a letter to all major league clubs before the draft telling them he would not sign a professional contract.

Iowa Cubs

On to the real games!  The Iowa Cubs quest for the PCL American North division title just keeps on going, as the I-Cubs beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-2.

Starter Jason Stanford picked up the win with six inning of work.  Stanford allowed only one run on three hits.  He walked four batters and struck out five.

Kevin Hart picked up his second straight save, and third on the season, with a perfect ninth inning.

Luis Figueroa was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Angel Guzman will get the start for Iowa on Sunday.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies beat the Birmingham Barons, 8-4.

Starter Mark Holliman only lasted 3.1 innings.  Holliman allowed three runs on eight hits.  He walked one and struck out three.  He also hit a batter.

Ed Campusano got the win in relief.  Campusano threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief, allowing only one walk and striking out one.

DH Jake Fox was 2 for 4 with his 22nd home run on the year.  It was a three-run shot.  Left fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and a run scored.

Matt Camp was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.  Third baseman Josh Lansford had a 2 for 4 night with a double and two RBI.

CF Sam Fuld was 1 for 4 with a walk, but had two outfield assists.

Star-divide

Daytona Cubs

Daytona lost to the Jupiter Hammerheads, 5-4, in 13 innings.

James Russell continued to struggle in the second half of the season.  Russell allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over 4.1 innings.  Russell struck out four.

Then the D-Cub bullpen settled down and shut the Hammerheads down.  Jayson Ruhlman tossed 2.2 innings of shutout relief.  Brian Schlitter and Blake Parker each threw two shutout innings.  Schlitter has yet to allow a run in the Cub organization.

Dustin Sasser took the loss.  He allowed two runs over 2.1 innings on three hits and three walks.

Shortstop Darwin Barney was 4 for 6 with a double and an RBI.  He also scored once.  Right fielder Ryan Harvey had a 2 for 6 evening with two RBI.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs got got chopped down by the Clinton Lumber Kings, 9-5.

Starter Kevin Kreier allowed seven runs on eleven hits over five innings.  Only four of the runs were earned.  Kreier didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

Probably because the official scorer pissed him off somehow, Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg pitched both Jon Mueller and John Muller in this game.  Both allowed a run.  Mueller pitched two innings and Muller one, unless it was the other way around.

Center fielder Brandon Guyer, first baseman Luis Bautista and left fielder Rebel Ridling all went 1 for 4 with a home run tonight.  It was Bautista's twelfth homer, Guyer's thirteenth and for Ridling, it was his sixth jack.

Boise Hawks

The Hawks pounded out twenty hits on the way to a 9-7 victory over the Vancouver Canadians in ten innings.

Starter Ryan Searle continues to be unscored upon in the Northwest League.  Searle allowed two hits.  He walked two and struck out an impressive seven.

Reliever David Cales got his second win by blowing the save and allowing two runs in an inning of relief.

Center fielder Ryan Sontag moved to the mound for the tenth inning.  Sontag walked the first two batters he faced, struck out one batter and then walked the bases loaded with only one out before recording a strike out and a popup to end the game and record a save.

I think it's now a 22-game hit streak for Josh Vitters. Vitters was 2 for 5 with a walk and a run scored.

The other two first-round picks in the lineup did well too.  Shortstop Ryan Flaherty went 2 for 6 with a double and two runs scored. Padres first-rounder Kyler Burke was 2 for 6 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

DH Sean Hoorelbeke had a 3 for 4 night with a double and two runs scored.  First baseman Ryan Keedy was 3 for 6 with a run scored.

Second baseman Marwin Gonzalez went 3 for 6 with a double and three RBI.

Michael Brenly went 2 for 5 with a double, a walk and three RBI.  He also stole a base.  This Brenly kid is hitting .320 right now.  You'd think we'd hear about a catcher hitting .320 in the NWL.  Maybe someone one on the Cubs broadcast team will mention him.

(Just a note, Bob, on the million-to-one chance that you actually read this:  We kid because we love both you and Michael.)

AZL Cubs

Were shut out by the AZL Giants, 7-0.

predictions

major league baseball player you predist flaherty and brenly to be??

from the mouth of Uecker:

"Am I the only one who’s glad it’s only a 4-game series? If was a 9-game series, I think the Cubs would win them all."

I wouldn't predict Michael Brenley to be an MLB player.

I’m sure it’s a possibility, but right now I don’t think that’s a very likely outcome.

+1

Agreed, too early on Brenly.

As for Flaherty, I could see him becoming a lefty version of Mark DeRosa.

Michael Brenly is a catcher, right?

If his defensive skills turn out to be ML-quality, I suspect he could have a career as a backup no matter how he hits.

He could, if.

The question is, how do you project him? The Cubs have four catchers in Boise alone – is Michael Brenly any more projectable than the rest of them?

by cwyers on Aug 17, 2008 11:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Side note - rating Cubs catchers

If I were rating catchers in our system that were more than stopgap/career minor leaguers and guys that could stick at catcher, only two rate now definitely rate ahead of Brenly for me – Wellington Castillo (could be a borderline candidate for top 100 lists due to position) and Steve Clevenger (defense needs work). Brenly would be in that next mix with Carlos Perez (lots of tools, but raw) and perhaps Jose Guevara, Alvaro Sosa, Luis Flores. If you forced an order out of me, I’d say top 5

1. Wellington Castillo – Only Cubs catcher that I feel confident can stick and will reach the bigs.
2. Steve Clevenger – Receiving improvement is needed, as his bat doesn’t really play elsewhere.
3. Carlos Perez – Raw, but a lot of tools.
4. Michael Brenly – I’m not sold his bat will play this well, but I do think his bat will play in A ball, so we’ll see how he develops.
5. Jose Guevara – There’s upside to be developed … will it happen?

They seem

to like him the more they see of him in Boise. When the season started, he barely played, which is normal for a 36th round pick. Now he seems to have settled into being the #1 catcher for Boise, and he occasionally plays first base or DHs on the days he doesn’t catch. So clearly his stock is rising in the eyes of the organization. But don’t forget, it wasn’t very high in the first place or they would have taken him before the 36th round.

Personally, I was impressed with his technique up in Boise. He doesn’t have a great arm but has a really quick transfer and release on his throws. Kind of like he’d been getting major league coaching for a long time.

I’m now willing to consider Brenly a prospect rather than organizational filler. Not a high prospect, but at least someone who has a chance, however small, of making the majors. Now if he comes back next season and is just as good in Peoria, then we can really start trying to project what his future is. Right now, we just don’t have enough information.

The Tribune is reporting

the Cubs are sending Brenly to the fall instructional leagues. That’s a very good sign for him.

crow

i’m guessing he would be a free agent, then? i’m horribly ignorant on first year pick signing rules.

though my guess is the cubs would be fined $500,000 for talking to him.

He goes back into the draft for next year, correct?

Fort Worth

He signed a contract with Fort Worth. He’ll be pitching in Indy, and then head back to the draft next year. He could be Hochevar (remember, some scouts thought Crow had better pure stuff than David Price, but wasn’t as consistent) or he could fall off the map.

Yes

He goes back into next year’s draft.

What happens if he doesn't get picked next year...

… based on teams thinking he’s not signable? Then what?

I’m thinking “Matt Harrington” here, possibly.

According to

this … The Nats failed to sign Crow b/c of $700K. Nats wanted a $3.3M salary. Crow wanted $4M.

I think most teams would have gone up. Crow has been lights out in college and the Cape Cod League.

Really shortsighted of them...

… considering they are pretty much bereft of talent at the ML level. He probably could have made their rotation next year.

There's mixed reports on whose fault

it was that Aaron Crow didn’t sign. Certainly, Bowden gets blame, but there’s also talk that the Hendricks Bros. didn’t give Bowden a specific offer until a few days ago. Short of it is, I wouldn’t blame this all on Bowden, particularly since the initial demands were around 9 million or so.

In saying that, they really could’ve used Crow. That said, Crow is somewhat hit and miss. For all his raw stuff, he was inconsistent, which was the cause of his drop. There were some mechanical concerns as well. They do have some good young arms from recent drafts. They’ll have two early firsts next year, and they are probably praying to land Strasburg, allowing them some flexibility with the 2nd pick.

by toonsterwu on Aug 17, 2008 12:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If he doesn't get drafted next season

he becomes a free agent. Someone will draft him though. The question is whether or not they’ll sign him.

One big difference between Crow and Harrington is that Harrington was a high school kid.

True.

Harrington was really, really stupid, wasn’t he?

by Al on Aug 17, 2008 8:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, he was

and it wasn’t like he came from a rich family and he had some financial cushion to fall back on either. His dad was a landscaper and his mom worked at Target. Last I heard, he was working at Target too.

I think there are times you turn down the money and go back to school or something, but he didn’t even do that. He signed with an independent league team so he couldn’t even get a college scholarship. (Not that he would have lasted long in a classroom, from what I heard.)

Gerrit Cole turned down the Yankees money, but I don’t think he was very excited about playing for the Yankees and I think he was excited about pitching for the Bruins. He’s supposedly a great student too, so if baseball doesn’t work out, he’s likely to have a UCLA degree to fall back on. He probably made the right decision for him.

I have no idea what happened to the “malpractice” lawsuit Harrington filed against his original advisors. I doubt it went anywhere.

Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

by Josh77 on Aug 17, 2008 8:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The Harrington story...

… should have been a cautionary tale. Maybe Gerrit Cole DID make the right decision for him… but it’s possible he won’t progress in college ball, or get hurt. You’re right that he might have a degree and another career possibility from going to UCLA, but it still has to be tough turning down that kind of money.

by Al on Aug 18, 2008 4:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

There's another issue with Cole

Is that there have been some “maturity” issues raised with him. That can mean a lot of different things. But I think with his dad, apparently, urging that he go to college, I believe the Cole family felt that being out on his own and playing minor league ball might not be very good for his long term development as both a player and a person. Especially if he had $4 million in the bank, which is apparently what the Yankees were willing to offer him.

Cole and his father may be thinking that he needs the more structured environment of a university, and that would likely give him a much better chance to be a major league ballplayer down the road, even if he has to settle for a much smaller bonus in three years.

Smart, then.

That would give him a much better shot at STAYING in the majors.

Fairly certain

that the suit between Tanzer and Harrington was eventually settled out of court. Could be wrong, though.

by toonsterwu on Aug 18, 2008 4:46 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think you're right

but we have no idea what Harrington got in that settlement.

Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

by Josh77 on Aug 18, 2008 11:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

he was a kid

that got stuck in a bad situation. At the end of the day, yes, he deserves fault, as it is his future and his contract, and he was also drafted for many years but never signed. That said, in terms of the first incident, the one with the Rockies, blame goes beyond Harrington. The Rockies either misled people or Harrington’s advisors misled people. Not absolving Matt of blame, but blame goes all around on that one.

by toonsterwu on Aug 18, 2008 4:48 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure

He did get bad advice. But he really wasn’t in a position to be turning down $3 million either, no matter what people were telling him. At some point he’s got to realize that the difference in his life between getting $3 million and $5 million isn’t a lot and the difference between $3 million and nothing is just too great.

Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

btw, on Harrington

he was picked for several years … he just never signed.

sontag pitching the tenth

i could check the hawks site, and so could we all, but was that quasi-by-design, or did they just run out of available arms, with everyone on pitch counts?

what a horrible sentence. yecchhhh!

william wilson

let him run wild

by tim815 on Aug 17, 2008 9:32 AM CDT   0 recs

It's a shame

That we didn’t land Alex Wilson. There were rumors that 2nd round money (which we gave Watkins) would’ve been enough. Just rumors, though. Kid’s draft stock fell because of injury, but had worked his way back into a mid-90’s velo with decent secondary stuff. Oh well, can’t get them all.

by toonsterwu on Aug 17, 2008 10:04 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Interesting

that Guzman will move up to AAA so quickly and get a start today. Is he on the fast track? Hoffpauir was named the PCL’s player of the month hitting safely in 17 of 20 games. He leads the I-Cubs with a .373 average and 21 HR’s. Infielders Scales (.316), Blanco (.294 and .457 last nine games) and Figueroa (.296) and outfielder Torres (.301) are quietly leading the I-Cubs. I wouldn’t be surprised at a interesting call-up from one of these guys in September. Hoffpauir will be up for sure and I would think Hart also (51 innings, 37 hits and 55 K’s with only 20 walks).

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

by mrcubsfan on Aug 17, 2008 10:04 AM CDT   0 recs

Guzman and AAA

From what I understand, Guzman’s rehab was delayed because of DL rules. Short of it is, he could’ve gotten going awhile ago. I think the organization probably wants to see if they should call him up in time to put him on a postseason roster.

Scales/Blanco/Figueroa – The betting money would be that these guys are a bit older players that are thriving in PCL. Could someone have developed? Certainly, but considering their histories and our depth charts, I’m not sure that they’ll get a look.

by toonsterwu on Aug 17, 2008 10:07 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

hart 51 innings 20 walks

sounds a bit lofty to me. fastball 92-93 iirc

by tim815 on Aug 17, 2008 10:22 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes,

of those three only Blanco is young at 24. The rest are career AAA type players.
