Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

"Ryan The Soothsayer" -- NYT

So, when did the New York Times turn into the Chicago Tribune? There seem to have been a run of stories lately on the fortunes of the Cubs in the Paper Of Record.

Maybe it's because we're headed toward the Event of the Century? Let us hope so. Anyway, here's a look at the antics of Ryan Dempster. Or, as writer Alan Schwarz says:

"Ryan Dempster’s conversion from capable closer to dominant starter, is one of the principal reasons for Waveland Avenue’s awakening hope."

Excellent article on Dempster

Thanks for posting this, SD Smooth Jazz Man. Let’s hope Dempster’s pre-season prediction comes true!

The unexamined blog is not worth reading.

I might also add...

Another NYT column takes a look at the Sabathia/Harden trades…the writer is of the opinion that even though Sabathia is obviously the more dominating of the two — just on Sabathia’s record , alone — the Harden trade was good for the Cubs because it may be just enough to seperate them from the Brewers. Also, columnist Benjamin Hoffman writes the talent dispatched to the A’s in no way equals what the Crew sent to the Tribe.

If everything continues to move forward for the Cubs, and Matt La Porta achieves stardom in Cleveland — the writer believes that when comparing the trades, a few years from now — it will be in the Cubs favor.

And, Dempster’s impression of Harry Caray is a video feature of this article, so don’t miss it.

Great Article....

I would be pretty depressed this off-season if the Cubs part ways with Dempster. The guy’s a class act.

It would be neat if he finishes his career here.

DeRosa: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?

Dempster: I think the best is yourself. [ . . .] I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.

I don't think you can keep Dempster

After the season he’s put up this year, he’s going to get a very large contract, and I don’t think you can count on him to ever have a season anywhere near this good again. If he were to give the Cubs a big discount, maybe. But if we’re going to overpay someone, make it Sabathia.

I wouldn't

All the innings CC has under his belt, and all the, uhm, baggage that he has over his belt makes him a big risk for a long-term contract. Granted, I don’t want to see him in the NL Central, because I think he’s likely to be just fine for a couple of years, but I wouldn’t want the Cubs committing $18M – $20M / year for 5 years — and I think that’s the starting point right now.

Right.

And Dempster could be had for probably 60% of that $, and he’s produced at or near the top of NL pitchers this year.

He’s 31 years old. I’d give him four years at $12m.

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
