Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Tuesday 8/19, 7:05 CT
Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, Aug 19, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
Today is the 39th anniversary of Kenny Holtzman's no-hitter vs. the Braves, an unusual no-hitter because there were no strikeouts. The wind was blowing in on a cool August day and that helped Holtzman, as a ball hit by Hank Aaron that normally would have been on Waveland was blown back and caught in the well by Billy Williams in the 7th inning. Paul Sullivan has a nice recap article in today's Tribune which also contains the text of the game stories written at the time.
| Today's Starting Pitchers | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Reminder, the above stat line is Harden's numbers with the Cubs only. See the pitcher box for his full-season stats.
Johnny Cueto beat the Cubs in Cincinnati on May 5, and they beat him at Wrigley Field on July 9. Cueto is 1-3, 5.63 in his last 7 starts and is second in the NL in HR allowed. Aramis Ramirez homered off him in the July game and Geovany Soto took him deep in the May game.
Rich Harden let Lou know that he likes pitching at night and in cooler weather, so that's the main reason he was pushed back from the Marlins series to start tonight. He did start once vs. the Reds in interleague play with Oakland, but that was in 2004 -- there's only one player who was in that game who's still on the Reds (Javier Valentin). Valentin is 1-for-3 lifetime vs. Harden, who threw five shutout innings in Atlanta last Wednesday, although he walked five.
Today's game is on cable in Chicago and Cincinnati. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Once again, a reminder that you can find the overflow comment threads, including the first pitch thread, on the right sidebar of both the front page and any interior page in the box headed "RECENT STORIES IN GAME THREADS". Today's first pitch thread posts at 7 pm CT, and the overflow comment threads will post at 8 pm, 9 pm and 9:45 pm CT.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I think that Cueto and Volquez
are both running out of gas, thanks to Dusty’s pristine pitcher-management…Or mis-management…Let’s jump on him early tonight!

You think that's bad
Look at what Aaron Harang’s gamelogs are like this year. Especially the May 22nd-29th managerial masterpiece!
The critical thing to understand is that major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play. There are many possible reasons why this is the case, and I don't really have a concrete idea as to why it is.
But the one thing I do know is that it is the case.

…after Cueto’s first couple starts, he was looking pretty unhittable. That’s clearly not the case now, though his K:BB ratio remains impressive. Let’s hope the Cubs can make some solid and repeated contact tonight.
And I always look forward to Harden’s starts. How can ya not? He did walk a few too many guys last outing, but I have a feeling that probably won’t be the case tonight.

After a two-week absence due to nuptials and honeymooning, I’m very happy to be back. I couldn’t follow too much because Internet was $20 a day at the resort, but much to my wife’s chagrin, I got to watch last Sunday’s game. What a jewel that was from Dempster.

cause im ok saying all of the above. Honestly, these aren’t good teams that we are playing and the Cubs are quite good, especially at home. I’d really like to seem distance themselves from the pack here and these next 9 games can do that possibly with 6 at home against the Pirates and Nats and then 3 on the road against the Pirates.

The critical thing to understand is that major-league pitchers don't appear to have the ability to prevent hits on balls in play. There are many possible reasons why this is the case, and I don't really have a concrete idea as to why it is.
But the one thing I do know is that it is the case.

The Riot just got 2 days off
I’m sure he’s fine.
And if the Cubs can get a 10 game lead he can take the last 2 weeks off of the season and get all rested up (as long as fonty is babysitting his kids.)

I wasn't talking specifically about today
I just hope that Lou remembers to rest him over the next few weeks so that he’s as fresh as possible for later.

When do Reds fans storm the field and demand Dusty stop playing Patterson?
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I will declare right now that our 6-7-8 hitters
do not compare with what the Reds are putting up there tonight.

I am a big Santo fan as well

This may have been pointed out in the CC threads earlier
When they traded for him they were 3.5 games out. Now they are 5 games out.

Im sure Moehler is trash against every other team in MLB.

They should just pitch him every night
I’m sure that would help
by chitownhawkeye on Aug 19, 2008 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes, I am happy to see that w/a 7 run
lead that Dusty…err, Yost has CC finish the game. 117 v 130 pitches will make a difference come Ocotober.
Keep adding up those pitches Yost! It is one thing to add up those pitches in a close game…but witha big lead? Yost is our biggest advantage down the home stretch. I will always believe that to be the case.
