Cubs Skybox

So I posted a little bit of bragging early in the game thread today.  This is second straight year I have sat in the Cubs Skybox that is literally directly behind homeplate.  I was sitting in a seat that was in line with homeplate and the pitchers mound.

The Skybox is fairly weak in terms of other facilities in the city but who gives a crap....its the Cubs and its was a 3 hit shutout.  Watching Harden, Marmol and Woody dominate from that angle was amazing.  (Last year when I was there it was Hart's MLB debut)

Anyways, the reason I am recaping is because last year when we sat there we realized we were next to the two owners boxes and I was really close to McDonough and Hendry.  Well, IMO, today was a little cooler because I was sitting about 5 feet from Walt Jocketty.  I have no real personal feelings at all towards the man but I thought it was pretty cool to watch his reactions to moments in the game (he never had an emotion) and just admire what a life he must live.  It got a little cooler when Hendry dropped by and they spoke while Walt ate for about an hour.

Anyways, I am about a 15-20 game a year guy but for the last two years I have felt like a king sitting in the suite behind homeplate.  Even better, IMO, is that I could care less about Walt, Jim or the Skybox and all I really cared about is the W.  The game was magnificent tonight and to quote one of my favorite rivals on this site PITCHING IS KING and it was on display tonight.

whoops

that is pretty cool. That woulda be priceless if you sat in the same seat for that Yankees-Cubs matchup a few years back. Lol steinbrenner would be going crazy if anything went wrong. Wish i had those seats. On a side note did u get actually have to pay for the seats?

by lexmarklover on Aug 19, 2008 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I didnt pay anything.

My Dad gets these from a large Steel Manf. Their company gets them a few times per year and my Dad gets 3 tix once a year.

Was Jocketty on the phone with Joe Morgan

I hear Morgan wants to manage. [not really]

I think the guy in the Miller Beer Ad

Should have come in and taken stuff out your Skybox. Got invited to one a few years back but turned it down. I am a hopeless purist and just don’t have any interest. Glad you had a blast GREAT win.

I went once.

It was a friend of mine’s bachelor party. Those of us invited figured we’d at least be out of the cold and wind, since it was a Sunday in April.

It was 85 degrees that day. Felt kind of closed in and “apart” from the game.

Worth doing once for the experience. Wouldn’t likely do it again.

Hey, does any one know the score?

The looks on those faces were priceless; a sorry-ass sign of sports events attendees today.

“Come to watch my favorite pitcher…get lit up?!” I love that guy in those commercials, especially with the $11.50 burger. “step aside, mona me….pardom-wa, see this about living the high life”

“I got’s to go smell me a hot dog!”

Now, he is the guy you want as a buddy to go to the game with at all times.

By far my favorite – that guy is awesome.

I have a picture of Hammer at the game last night

Just kidding. Congards and since the cubs won you have to go back tomorrow, too.

That would be kool..

I bet that view is really kool, i had the chance of seeing Nolan Ryan strike out the side in the first, from the same view, here in Texas once. And George W. was there!

I still have the ticket

late 1996, I got invited by my boss to sit in WGN’s box. We went to the game and in the middle innings they took us into the radio booth. I found myself standing next to Harry! I was completely star struck and just kinda stuttered at him. He signed my ticket and so did Pat and Ron!!! I’ll never forget it.

Let's get some runs!!!!

Done it a few times

my MIL’s company close to the ballyard goes annually. Since I didn’t have tix to the game each time, I went. Not the same thing as the bleachers, especially on a bright sunny day.

On the pseudo flip side, a colleague’s wife used to work at the ballpark. She often got a $200 Aramark card and let us use it. Suffice to say, me and three buddies ran that card dry before the 5th inning. Plus it was in the bleachers. So in essence we got freebie concessions AND got to sit in the bleachers. That’s probably the best of all worlds.

You should have told BlueMike...

…that you were going to be in the skybox. He could have fought his way through security, and then you two could have gone at it like Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris in “Way of the Dragon.” I envision the fight ending like the conclusion to “The Dark Knight,” with BlueMike cackling “PITCHING IS KING! SORIANO SUCKS!” as he plummets to the seats below.

you are one funny guy, lol

Good luck Shawn Johnson, Lolo Jones and Doug Schwab. Bring home the gold!!!

I agree

the suite/skybox is nothing to write home about. Here are some pics of my first and only chance at one a few weeks back (8/5/08). The coolest things were the view and the cushioned seats. It was also a little nerve wrecking walking across the platform where you enter all suites. Hope you guys don’t mind the pics here, figure it wont be as busy as a game thread to slow it down much.

As with you, the Cubs blew a big lead and Harden lost his chance at a W when Home Run Howry gave up a 2 run bomb to Carlos Lee. The Cubs did come back and beat the Astros 11-7 to make it an all around great experience.

Go ahead, Z me.

Sat in the skyboxs once.....

for a buddy’s bachelor party back in 2005. I agree completely with what Al said above, you feel more apart from the game. It was fun to do once & probably wouldn’t do it again. Would much rather be in the bleachers.

We did get to sit next to Micky Morandini, who was in town for the game. He autographed our tickets – was fun talking with him.

BELIEVE!

Shoot I would

take the skybox everytime. Darn desert cart is worth it alone. I have never seen an Taffy Apple that big, nor will I ever again (tear in eye).

I should

point out I was a little younger and good eat things like apples. Now, darn teeth fall out chomping into something like that (again tear in eye).

Crikey

“It got a little cooler when Hendry dropped by and they spoke while Walt ate for about an hour.”

WOW. That’s some staying power Jocketty has. I’m usually full after about 10-15 minutes. Kobayashi and Joey Chestnutt have nothing on Walt. Mahalo

That should equal a Cubs W
