i agree

but most on here seem to not like magic numbers for superstitious (i.e., illogical, nonexistent) reasons

I have a thought about this.

I’m thinking I’ll post it if and when it gets below 20. Anyone agree?

it is, but it isn't

for the superstitious, would it be fine to eliminate teams. the nats will be toast sooner or later this week. once we get to a point where only milwaukee or st. louis remains, that would be a good thing.

i work third shift and put in for some time in october. hopefully, i’ll spend it online with many of you.

That could be in about a week

Certainly when it gets to single digits and it would be nice to tick off the other teams as they are eliminated, like Reds, Pirates, Astros.

The one constant has been . . . baseball.

20 sound about right

I will confess to counting down the magic number since the All Star break.

20 seems fair

It is fine, Al

Question – are you going to use the division magic number (currently 31) or the playoff spot magic number (currently 28)?

Division title number...

… since the Cubs are in first place, going for the division.

Will make a note, though, if/when the Cubs clinch a playoff spot.

Another option...

would be to note the Elimination number of teams in the division (if you could work it into the standings that show up already that might be the best spot for it).

It would give similar info and yet it might also avoid the superstitious people from complaining because it isn’t about the Cubs magic number so much as its about the other teams not having a chance to catch them.

As it stands now the numbers are: CIN – 15, PIT – 17, HOU – 24, STL – 28, MIL – 31

Those are just for the division and not the playoffs (WC).

Any chance we can clinch this thing on Sept 18th?

sep18th

funny you ask….i’m headed out of the country for the last week of the season and sep 18 will be the last game i see other than 162 which i’m pretty confident will be meaningless.

so last night i figured it out….the cubs need to outperform the brewers by 4.5 games from now until that day to clinch on sep 18. meaning if they outplay them by 1.5 going into that series vs. the brewers, they would need to sweep. so it will probably remain possible until then as long as the cubs play well until then, which seeing the schedule (cin, wash, pitt, hou twice, cin again) is very possible.

it would be fun to clinch it head to head at wrigley during that series.

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
