Lou Needs to Do Something Drastic . . .
To get Soriano’s attention and let him know that his lack of hustle is not acceptable. Him jogging after that pop up in 7th could very well cost us this game. Lou needs to pull him in the middle of an inning a la Bobby Cox. This is the ONLY way we can get through to this guy . . . Thoughts?
I'm not as upset about it.

Ok . . . I'll speak slowly
I’m not saying we’re better off without Soriano. I’m saying we ARE better off with a HUSTLING Soriano . . . and how we can get him to consistently hustle
How can we get Theriot to catch popups?
How can we get Theriot to not constantly get thrown out on the bases?
I'll take a guy who gets thrown out HUSTLING
then a guy who gets picked off constantly cause he’s asleep on the basepaths . . .
constantly?
prove it. Go on, I’ll wait. But I won’t wait forever, and that’s how long it will take you to prove that Soriano gets thrown out “constantly”.
Riot practically has more CS than Soriano has ATTEMPTS.

by drewishdrewid on Aug 20, 2008 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Soriano has gotten picked off TWICE in the past week
Getting picked off at first base cause you’re sleeping is far worse than getting caught stealing in my opinion
and the week before that?
what about the week before that?
How about July? June? May?
In order to be “constantly” picked off base, it has to happen, well, you know, CONSTANTLY.
Yes. Soriano was picked off twice this week. DeRosa was also the victim of bad base-running himself. Does HE not hustle?
Riot has TWELVE CS. If anyone has been CONSTANTLY running the bases badly, it’s the DUDE IN YOUR SIG.

If guys are trying their best and make mistakes it’s hard to fault them. Nobody’s perfect. But it doesn’t take talent to give 100% all the time. . . that’s all I’m saying
Understand, but
Theriot’s baserunning gaffes are a sign of not learning from past mistakes. I wouldn’t focus on the CS — I’d look at the running into other outs on the bases — going to 3rd on grounders in front of him, not knowing when to tag up, etc.

Not if he's hustling . . .
If Lou’s giving him those steal signs or a green light . . . then no, I have no problem with it
If Lou keeps giving Theriot the 'steal sign'....
he’s making a mental mistake.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 20, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions
so wait
1. Lou gives Riot the green light to steal
2. Riot tries to steal and gets thrown out a DOZEN times
3. that’s not a mental mistake because…
he’s running hard?

by santoswoodenlegs on Aug 20, 2008 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions
No, not if you're given a steal sign . . .
If the coach gives you a steal sign and you get the best jump you can, run as hard as you can and STILL get thrown out, that’s not a mental mistake
You're assuming Ryan is running at the direction of his manager.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I am . . .
and if not, then you may be right if he’s running in situations where he shouldn’t be (i.e., trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs) But I’m assuming Theriot his running at the discretion of Lou either with a steal sign or he has a “Green Light”
and if it's a green light
then he’s making MENTAL MISTAKES by running when he shouldn’t.
Our 2008 Chicago Cubs -- FINDING WAYS TO WIN!
by drewishdrewid on Aug 20, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions
What do you mean by "shouldn't"
Are you saying he should know when the catcher is going to make a good throw and get him out? Most of the times I remember him getting thrown out, they’ve been on times when the situation didn’t dictate a “don’t steal” sign . . . that would be the only mental mistake in my book
I cannot imagine
that every time he has been CS, the situation called for him to run. I just cannot.
And this conversation doesn’t even bring up the fact that if Soriano can make the few mistakes he has made and STILL produce at the level he has, it means he’s a phenomenal player. I would much rather have a player who is performing a little bit below his all-star level than a player who is over-performing and still cannot get the job done. One player, I can coach to be better. The other I cannot.

Agree with you completely
Soriano is a MUCH better player than Theriot. This isn’t about Theriot. This is about doing what you just said . . . “Coaching Soriano to be better” by hustling on every play
Look (channeling my inner lou and trying to lighten this convo)
Soriano is FAR more talented that Theriot . . . I’m not arguing that. I’m just saying Soriano frustrates me from time to time with his lack of hustle and stupid plays
Forget it
I understand what you’re saying and I agree with you, but this is so polarizing, you’re not going to get your point across.

Bronson Arroyo is 11-10
I haven’t checked, but I don’t think all 11 wins are against the Cubs.
He’s not what he used to be, but he’s been a serviceable pitcher most of his career.

He's Marquis with an uglier haircut and fancier leg kick.

Hmm.
What would Jason look like with a mullet?
Not asking for a pic — I don’t think it’d be that funny.

like the guy that gets arrested at the Water N Hole every weekend. (Not kidding, the bar really is named Water N Hole)

I just saw that "double" that led to the winning run
Somebody should’ve had that, dammit!! Where was Sori?

The ball really was in no Man's land
If Soriano got there it would have been diving effort anyway….still stucks…but ya got to score more than 1 run

No you don't...you only have to score 1 run MORE THAN THE OTHER TEAM.
If Theriot catches the ball…or Soriano uses his head and fresh legs to get to it….or Lilly doesn’t bounce the ball past Soto….well…you get the idea.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Just saying that 1 run could have been enough to win this game. If we had played better.

Well...
While we are at…we can include the crappy offense today. Lack of clutch hitting was just as responsible today as the poopy defense.
I am just saying that how many 1-0 games have we had this year….I would say none w/o looking at the results . True, that we have had a few shutouts but nothing is to say that those games don’t turn out a little differently if the score is 1-0 in the 9th….

I hate these kind of losses
rather lose in a blowout….
Tend to dwell on the what if and what should have been in these type of loses….

Too shallow?
