Best food to bring in to Wrigley?

So this weekend I will be coming into Chicago and making my first trip to the Friendly Confines since the Sandberg era (intense excitement).

I've heard mixed reviews about the food at Wrigley and was thinking my wife and I might prefer to get something outside the park and bring it in with us....but I have no clue about the offerings in the neighborhood.  Anyone have any tips for, say, a high-quality sandwich place?

If it makes any difference, we'll be walking west down Addison to get to the ballpark.

Many thanks in advance - and can't wait to be in the house!

Hot Doug's

is about 2 miles west of the park on Addison and a block or so south on California. Quite a hike, but only a five minute cab ride from the park, and well worth the trip.

Wrigleyville Dogs isn’t nearly as good, but still good, and a lot closer – about a block west of the park. You won’t be sorry if you make the trek to Hot Doug’s though.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Hot Doug's Was On Guy Fieri's Show

He went there during an episode of “Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives”.

Was getting a beer in section 528

and ran into Guy Fieri getting a hot dog at the stand. FWIW, at that stand I order a Lance Johnson “With” = One Dog with Onions

I used to go to the old Hot Doug’s before the fire on Roscoe.

If you go to Doug's

Get there EARLY. There’s always a line outside, and you will wait to get inside. It’s worth it, but you do have to wait. If the game you’re going to is on Saturday, get to Doug’s at around 11:15 to 11:30ish. He’s closed on Sundays, unfortunately.

Wrigleyville Dogs is my vote

I used to go there EVERY game, regardless of the time of the game, dating back to 2004. They’re not friendly, the soda isnt any good (avoid the Sprite), and its a somewhat cramped place, but its solid ballpark style food and it isnt nearly as pricey. Also, its where a lot of the Wrigley Field employees go, so it has to be good if the regulars go there, right?

Hot Doug's is good

Hot Dougs is better than Wrigleyville dogs. We’re talking gourmet/haute cuisine quality, albeit hot dogs. It is not comparable. However it is very crowded, rarely open, and farther than the original poster noted.

If you like gourmet food, Chicago is a dining paradise, but not a ton of fast food in the immediate area is “wow.”

For fast food I like Smoque (far west on Irving Park) and the closest fast food that I recommend is Aloha Eats, about 1.5 miles south of the park on clark. Great Hawaiian Fast Food!

I cant believe it

But I actually agree with MDNBNIU

Wow.

In all seriousness, if you’re looking for a solid Chicago Meal, try Rosati’s or Giordano’s. Those are two solid Chicago type places, but both are Pizza, so you’d want to eat there well BEFORE the game. If you do go, get your pizza with Garlic.

Giordano’s down town was the best. Every time I come up there I have to go there.

There is one down town and one buy the air port some where.

Smoque!

Smoque is the best bbq in Chicago in my opinion. Not that they need any advertising, especially on the weekend the line is always out the door. Though this is about 3 miles west of the park.

I need to try Hot Dougs and Aloha Eats now.

Eatzi's

i usually grab a couple of sandwiches from eatzi’s in the century shopping center on clark st.. its a little ways from wrigley but for anyone staying at the hotels on diversey and walking to the ballpark it is a good option.

Eatzi's at the Century is closed.

Not sure why that website is still up, but that place closed down a couple months ago.

You mention

hotels on Diversey? How far would this be from the park? Was considering staying over night when we visit on Sept 19th so we aren’t driving 3 hrs with beers under our belts. Thing is, it won’t be any better if we have to drive 10 miles to get to a hotel either.

The hotel on Diversey & Clark

Which is the only one I know is a pleasant 25 minute walk to the park or you can take the bus.
Very convenient.

There are two hotels there.

One is called the Inn at Lincoln Park, the other is a Days Inn. Don’t have time to find the links, but you can google them.

Here’s another: Hawthorne Terrace. That’s about a six block walk to Wrigley. Many people I know have stayed there and liked it.

If you end up staying at Clark and Diversy

The Wieners Circle is right there, I have a friend that lives on Clark and Wrightwood (across the street) and we have been there many times for good eats.

Will keep in mind

So far no luck with any of the area hotels. All booked! I am still hunting though….

You may already have, but check hotels.com...

The other travel sites were booked, and were more expensive. We got the smallest room possible (to save $$ for the game), but it was only $83 and that was with all of the random hotel taxes.

by jbertram on Aug 21, 2008 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah, Wiener's Circle...

I love the abusive counter girls. Was in there after bar time one Saturday, and this loudmouthed, skinny, (and pretty hot) drunk girl walked in and was taking her time ordering—a WC no-no—and was being pretty disruptive and obnoxious. The girl at the register started giving it to her pretty good, so she ordered like a double char dog or something, and then proudly proclaimed “I can eat whatever I want and I don’t gain an ounce!” To which the register clerk replied, “You probably just gonna throw it up anyways, you anorexic b*tch.” The entire place exploded in laughter. Classic.

Has anyone stayed at the Inn @ Lincoln Park?

Thats where we are staying on Sunday the 31st…got a really good deal on it at Hotels.com. Usually I stay closer to downtown, but we are only there for that night, and since the old ball and chain is from a town of 600 and this is her first Chicago experience…I wanted to stay a little closer.

Some friends of mine have stayed there...

… and found it just fine. It’s not a luxury hotel but the rooms are decent and the price is right and so is the location.

Thats all I was hoping for...

Like I said above we got it for $83 (taxes included), which I thought was a steal. I have a friend in that neighborhood too, so I have a place for the car. We will be at the game on Labor Day.

$83 is an excellent price for that hotel.

train/bus
Thing is, it won’t be any better if we have to drive 10 miles to get to a hotel either.

Then take the train or bus to your hotel.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 21, 2008 8:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you can.

That all depends on where the hotel is, doesn’t it?

by Al on Aug 21, 2008 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not really

You can pretty much get to any hotel in the city by train or bus.

I would just strongly discourage anyone from driving to Wrigley if they do not need to.

by big_lowitzki on Aug 21, 2008 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True on the city hotels...

… but if you’re in the burbs, that’s another story, and if people have to drive in from another city to get to Chicago, then what?

I would...

by big_lowitzki on Aug 21, 2008 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This what I would

want to do. I have been the route of parking for $25 in someone’s back yard 6 blks away form the park. If we can’t find a place to stay close by, one of us wil have to drink water. Let me be the first to say Not It!

cheaper(?) parking

I have found that there is a parking garage on Sheffield just south of Belmont across from the Vic that is $10 for Cubs game parking. If you don’t mind walking the 5 or 6 blocks its well worth it. Especially if you are driving south or even to LSD or 90/94 after the game this puts you out of all of the post game traffic.

A couple years ago I had extra tickets that I couldn’t get rid so I thought, hey, why not leave the park when I’m hungry, get some tacos and head back in w/ my extra ticket. Everyone around me was wondering how I got tacos. Haha

If you want a treat

go to Ben’s Deli on Broadway & Stratford which is about 15 minute walk from the park.
FANTASTIC corned beef sandwich ( others are good too). I usually bring a sandwich from
Panera on Diversey . They are very good.
Hot Dogs are not real practical but if you want to eat before or after Wiener Circle on Clark & Wrightwood has great dogs & burgers.

chicken wings

If you like chicken wings, my wife and I always try to get to Yak-Zies when visiting the area. Good sandwiches too. It’s on Clark, just north of the ballpark.

Sandwiches - Bat 17

If you’re coming from the north side I’d suggest you stop at Bat 17 in Evanston. It’s right by the Davis Street El stop so you can pick them up on the way. GREAT sandwiches! They keep well for the trek down to the park and go well with Old Style.

Murphy's .....

just outside of the center field bleachers entrance has fabulous huge burgers.
But the key to all of this is that the food at Wrigley is, for the most part, average at best. Many other ballparks have much better food. There was an article in the New York Times covering this subject in late June. Check it out.

Here is the definitive experience

Don’t buy a dog or anything hot and bring it in, it will soggy. If we have time we go to Endy’s on N. Milwaukee Ave ( A Chicago experience by itself) considered by many as the best deli in Chicago, a city full of good Deli’s. It is not far from the park located south of Belmont on Milwaukee Ave——3955 N. Milwaukee. Get whatever you like at Lawndale & Milwaukee.

It is a traditional Polish hangout with broken English but if your money is green they will do you right. BTW it used to be Andy’s for the old memories and it still is relatively cheap.

Second, buy a big bag of peanuts outside the park, if you like go to Nuts on Clark and get some mixed nuts.

Third bring a small soft sided cooler with plastic Soda Pop or water and save some $$$,

Enjoy

Other thoughts, we have brought in friend chicken from the chicken place I can’t remember its name on Addison a block away, Subway sandwiches but Endy’s is the best making a great day.

Foooooooooood

Wrigleyville dogs, skip the dogs. Get a pizza puff, actually get 10 of them.

Stop at The fullshillig and get a hot dog for free an hour before the game or grab some nachos to go……mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm nachos.

hit Vines on clark, and get the chicken panini to go. amazing.

Go to Azteca de Oro, next to Wrigleyville dogs, and grab some tacos or burritos to take to the game.

Some ppl said pizza, kinda hard to take a whole pizza in the park and pay attention while eating it. but good luck with that.

Living any closer to Wrigley and I would feel Santo's spittle on my neck.

Use tripadvisor.com

the best website for finding and checking out anything before you go anywhere. When you search for restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc, you can narrow down the area you are interested in on a map and just click on each place and find out more about it. Very awesome!
